Qualquer Gato Vira-Lata (2011)
My comfort movie
If you're not Brazilian I guess you won't feel the same, I've seen these actors on novelas (soap operas) since I was a kid, one other review said this is trying to be an U. S. A romantic comedy, I don't think so.
Men will hate this gratuitously because of misogyny, but I think the movie has a lot of charm, Cleo has a lot of appeal, she is really pretty and you can understand our male protagonists for linking her, she is really upbeat and bright.
The comedy is what makes the movie for me, me and my brother always quote some of the best lines, such as "é o Guru" and "um whisky duplo", this movie will always make me smile even if it's a silly movie that is not trying to be that serious.
Wish (2023)
Simple but sweet
Loved the movie, it made me cry (I'm not an emotional person) when Asha sang the main song, and when the citizens started singing, she just puts so much emotion into her voice, also loved her in West Side Story
There are a bunch of references to other Disney works such as Cinderella, Snow White, Bambi and many others, like the way her friends personalities are like the 7 dwarves, Magnifico's powers are green like maleficent, he sounds like a lot of other Disney villains, Asha's robe looks like the fairy godmother's etc.
Honestly I liked this way better than Encanto and Coco, and I'm latina (22 y female), this work reminded me of Nimona, which is also great. The villain goes pretty hard, she fights him so well, it was kinda funny when she pulled a heavy book shelf on top of him tho, I thought in the next scene he would have broken arms or something
I believe one of the main lessons in the story is to not trust our leaders blindly, always doubt them. The other one is to not give our dreams to someone else, we're the only ones who can make them happen.
While I did gave it 8 stars, because I believe the animation could be better, the songs sound rushed and clumsy sometimes, and whilst I loved our main character Asha, I think she is too selfless, she doesn't have her own motivations, I wanted her to have a WISH (wishing to learn arts and display it in the city for example) since she says she likes to draw.
Nooni Booshige (2019)
Spectacular Show
If you're coming in thinking you'll see a lighthearted comedy kdrama you better go back to the catalog.
Here you'll find discussions of ageism, police corruption, ableism, class, depression, conflict of generations, and also a lot of pain and suffering.
The main character is really strong willed, which you won't see in a lot in other dramas, she says what she thinks, she stands up for herself.
The performances were so good, everyone put their soul on this project, I cried so much the episode we see her dad's prosthetics, the last two episodes I just cried the whole time, the first ten episodes are "Okay" but they're building it up to throw you off in the last 2 ones, that are a masterpiece.
You won't see many Korean dramas being this political, the class part really really gets me, cause this people are killing theirselves working and still can't afford to have any kind of meat. The parallel from the son complaining they can't buy pork in the fake memories to the real son back then saying the same things but this time it's ways deeper had me really flabbergasted.
It's a really long show, my only critic would be that sometimes the episodes feel tiring because of that, the scene when she rides the bike to try to save her dad goes on for way too long and doesn't look that good.
But basically you can only appreciate this one if you've seen bad kdramas before, here you won't find a character having lunch at Subway just because of the sponsorship, wearing a technological face mask and have the other characters say "omg that's such a good device", in "business proposal" I lost count of how many times the characters had McDonald's coffee, so sometimes you feel like you're watching a huge ad instead of a series, but here there is basically no product placement or ads at all, don't know how they managed.
Together Together (2021)
Really rare to see friendship like this
Loved the dynamics of a woman and a man being friends, the movie sometimes teases at a romantic outcome for them but in the end I was glad that didn't happen. If they were a sexual/romantic couple they would not be so sincere towards the other.
I loved the stance she took about her parents, she is not going after them and humiliating herself, she made one mistake but they didn't have the decency of supporting her at such a tough moment.
The lines and delivery of them are really good, the soundtrack is always really low and makes sense with the scene ongoing, the jokes also hit really well, though the movie is not full on comedy.
