Ying xiong (2002)
Beautiful
I do not pretend to be a martial arts film expert, but this film was amazing. The merging of such beautiful settings, with the breath-taking fights clearly defying physics but making what would be a bloody duel into a elegant and flowing "dance of blades", if you will.
The idea of the actual real-time characters largely not moving, and the film focusing on flashbacks, is well "pulled-off", through a clever plot and the many different possible stories, all possible and all fascinating.
Although many people may see this film as uninteresting, and just a fighting film, it is much more. It is a constantly gripping arts film; a cinematic beauty, an elegant marvel caught on film, almost.
I did not think i would like this film, but loved it. Try it out, i urge you to.
Un tè con Mussolini (1999)
One of my favourites
This film, I feel, is amazing. It combines a violent historical period with comedy, without offending anyone, which is a very admirable trait. The perfectly acted characters were both funny and very believable; very English 1930's or so old woman.
The plot was interesting and a well written film overall. The cross-dressing son a humorous side-story to the dominant "imprisonment" of the ladies, and the situation with Else (Cher) and Luca. Still, these different story lines merged seamlessly to provide a varied and fascinating story throughout.
Overall, a fantastic film.
VH1 Divas Las Vegas (2002)
I loved it....except Shakira
Now, before I start going on about this, I must first say that I downloaded a weird edition of it, so only have Céline n Anastacia's duet, Cher, Shakira, Dixie Chicks and Stevie Nicks, Céline Dion then the final Elvis tribute medley.
The duet at the start was an interesting opening, as to my surprise their voices went quite well together, although it wasn't anything shockingly amazing.
Cher was very good i felt, and she doesn't sound anything like a man as a previous buffoon commented. She offered a brilliant performance - as always - but sadly set the bar a tad high for - or as my copy has as the next performance - Shakira.
AWFUL. That girl's voice made me cringe! She should NOT have been on this show.
Probably my favourite part of the show was the Dixie Chicks and Stevie Nicks. I love duets, and this one blew me away. Obviously Stevie Nicks is far better than the Dixie Chicks, but they complemented each other well, and the vocal power of Nicks made the DC cover of Landslide SO much better.
Céline Dion was good of course, but I tend to skip this part as I can only stand her in small doses. A strong performance however, I must admit.
The finale was very good i thought (except Shakira's vulgar warbling of course), especially Anastacia and Cher, who really put their all into their performance and were brilliant.
Definitely a thumbs-up from me.
