History: good. Movie: bad
21 February 2024
As a Holden fan I was quite literally, too keen to watch this movie when I learnt of it's existence but also as a keen Aussie history nostalgic I'm very pleased I did.

However having said that, I'm of two very seperate mind's when it comes to this auspicious production. I was very pleased to read that it was a great success in drive ins around the country and that it featured one of Australia's iconic actors of the early-mid 80's (Sigrid Thornton) and a particular favourite of mine but unfortunately she spent very little of the film and her considerable talents in the background with few line's and as a superfluous character of the film.

Which brings me back to the matter or duality. While the film did have some initial charm of it's own and from what I understand from the reviews of people that remember those days well (I was only 2yo at the time of production) the days of teenage suburban Sydney 1976 were captured quite well, this movie's story was for lack of a better word, BORING!!!

There simply was almost no story. It was just the very bare bone's of the day and a life of a typical teenager and his beautiful FJ Holden doing typical teenage things same as any other character!?!

As a child/teen of small country 80's-90's Australia I had more adventures than ALL of these people put together! Lol The entire movie I sat and waited for some Aussie style, semi cataclysmic event to befall one, some or all of the characters and..... nothing happened!?! Lol That's why I struggled to award this film with four stars. I could lovingly give stars for kindly taking me down the memory lane of a mid 70's generation (thank you very much) but in terms of production I felt totally deflated in term's of storytelling and substance.

Thanks again. I think?! Lol.

Almost as bad as Spiderman 3
6 February 2024
Merits. Good effects with good (not great) n smoothly applied production and direction. Some good acting with passable comic book style dialogue.

Demerits: Basically everything else. First off the worst part for me which held nothing but cringe moments was Jamie Foxx's depiction of electro as a hopeless (genius 🙄) looser that becomes uncharacteristically obsessed with Spiderman (in the middle of a dangerous car chase/heist, weird!) then via even weaker means becomes electro. Smh idk 🤷 Garfield's almost equally cring worthy attempt to be comic book witty, cute and charismatic comes off as simply cheesy and over done.

Among a whole host of other poor qualities this film exudes that I don't have the energy or movie phile vocabulary to convey, all I can say is protect your sanity and avoid this train wreck.

Classic Aussie comedy! 👍🤠
16 September 2023
I remember this being watched by my parents and them enjoying it thoroughly and me being to young to appreciate it for what is was. Now that we have internet tv sites I found all 6 seasons on 9NOW and thought to see what they saw in it. A true classic of quality Australian comedy with a real charismatic flavour dispite the dark element of Maggie's dementia.

With solid performances from well loved 70's comedic actor Garry McDonald and Ruth Cracknell, a celebrated actress named in 1998 by the National Trust as one of Australia's top 100 national living treasures. This show epitomized the classic Australian style comedy (even if it is forgivably a tad cringe worthy at times) and (generally lol) wholesome prime time entertainment that will stand the test of time.

If you like classically witty Aussie style comedy then this is the one for you. You could even get your money's worth by purchasing the box set on DVD and relive the zanyness as if it were for the first time again and again at your leisure!

Problem city

There are so many holes in this story it's hard to know where to start.

I was ashamed of myself after 30-40 mins for not realising the ultimate answer was a no brainer given there was a pregnant woman.

I don't even remember there being an explanation to the rule's to the game they just seem to know with no ryme or reason?!

Not to mention people suddenly delegating themselves judge, jury and executioner. No explanation as to where the bodies were going or who/what was taking them away, etc etc etc!!??

To me this idea was to big of a concept for the writers and directors to approach simply not having the talent (albeit intellect) to pull it off and make it and the characters convincing.

If you're looking for a smart movie with a satisfying ending, this isn't it!

Some good elements but not worth the time it takes to appreciate them. Smh.

Krampus (I) (2015)
5/10
Coulda, shoulda, woulda

An interesting and ambitious style to say the least.

This film showed flashes of great movie making with slick (especially krumpus) spfx, good (not great) acting, sound/score and script.

Now for the bad news.

Strange story arc with it trying to pull off a witty comedy flavour and then soon fading in and out of horror then back to comedy.

Given the acting talent on hand they really could have given the character relationships much more depth but once KIDS (yes kid's) start disappearing and getting abducted the parents of said kids seem to forget that they're parents and are no where near as concerned as one would think they'd be. That really tore down any real entertainment value for me and then it went back to a semi comedy of sorts. As a result your left with a movie that is quite messy, even borderline campy where it could have really conveyed a sober, nail biting and dark but styleish horror experience but nope, it twisted off into a mild tongue in cheek comedy horror that just left me flat and unsatisfied. It was as if the eggnog they were drinking as they wrote the story started to kick in and they just thought "Pfft who cares. It's a Xmas movie, nobody cares!" Shame!

P.s. The baby girl is adorable and the only character I could even remotely invest in.

Fan's of Sammy J and Randy will love it! 👍
5 May 2023
When I first discovered this I was worried it would reek of a tryhard spinoff nature that falls short of the hilarious skits, song's and stand-up's of these two, together or separately, that I've often enjoyed in the past but infact I was pleasently surprised as I found belly laugh after comical and innovative belly laugh.

The supporting cast is very good at helping the whacky storylines move forward and it's as always with the genuinely fun and funny style of our two main heroes who can only be described as Australia's most charasmatic frenemies. With the odd lyric changed parades, that you never know when they're going to beeak into in each show of old classic songs from yesteryear pertaining to the current dilemma/subject at hand, it really lends a warming element to the episodes you will not find anywhere else.

If you like Sammy J and Randy, and you can let yourself go and be open to anything, you'll find this a hit!

DC's Legends of Tomorrow (2016–2022)
3/10
From good to really bad
3 May 2023
First season was fun and enjoyable with interesting story and characters and quite good CGI for tv. Then the second season was good not great but by ep 9 of the third season I was ready to hang up my cape and see what Marvel was up to.

Cringe worthy elements constantly crop up and dialogue that sounds like the writers need a good, dry stretch rehab.

A plot that just seems to aimlessly weave and turn just to keep the story arc rolling does NOT an entertaining story make.

Choreography seems to be wash and repeat and a total lack of chemistry between the actors is evident no matter how hard they try.

Way better shows available just not with DC! 👎

Getting worse by the episode
2 May 2023
There's been plenty of cringe worthy moments throughout this show but until now not a WHOLE episode. If writing got any more lazy, there would be no Hollywood.

Whatever happened to a vivid imagination and soild storytelling.

Campy, uninspired kiddy drivel that just seems to drag on. If it wasn't for White Canary being such eye candy, I'd probably stopped watching many episodes ago.

I'm so disappointed I bought every series because now I feel like I'm going to haft to sell the one's I've endured and the rest on eBay at a loss.

That's it for me and DC. They won't be seeing another cent from me.

How in th HELL did this get 7.2???

I've been going through th reviews and rarely are ppl giving more than 6/10 and th one's under that point out the same negitive aspects of the show!?

One watches stuff like DC Legends of tomorrow or Black Lightning and wonders if DC can do any worse and then something like Stargirl comes out!

Weak story arch that has been done to death with cookie cut characters you simply cannot identify with.

Predictable script with average token CGI that just drags on from one ep to the next.

Couldn't help but laugh wen th father, 'Pat' says "sometimes I try too hard?!" after his son once again fobs him off after being asked to do something then being told by th equally ignored by her daughter mother says "No, your trying just fine." Omg, way to pander to narcissistic youth and the toxic ideology of insanely weak parenting to further break up the family cell DC!

Guaranteed there's a special place in hell for you ppl!!!

AVOID!!!!!!

The Blacklist: Genuine Models Inc. (No. 176) (2022)
Season 9, Episode 13

Great to good to woefull
8 March 2023
When I started to watch the black list, I found it to be smart, sophisticated and talent rich in both cast, production and writing but as the years and seasons have gone by I've been able to forgive the small indiscretions that have popped up now and then (like being able to see the wheel ramp of a car chase or major lack of continuity between cut screens ect) in favour of solid and engaging story lines and performance but thanks to this episode, it appears I can no longer count on those thing's either anymore.

C grade at best storytelling given the outlandish nature of the material will be ensuring that I don't order season 10 on DVD in future.

As far as I'm concerned, The Black List ended with Elizabeth Keen!

Thanks anyway 👍

Nope (2022)
4/10
Frustrating
7 February 2023
Nope had great production values and soild character arch's but I was always sitting there feeling as though I was waiting for the story to finally fill out and become more.

When I say "soild character" I mean all but the lazy sister who I couldn't warm to at all.

With no true rhyme or reason behind the (cleverly disguised...not), alien...thing, clearly trying to leave it's origin's open ended for a tv show or endless sequels for some other writers with deep pockets to pick up on (dear God no) was clearly an attempt at coming up with something original in an era of extreme unorigionality and gambling on the hope that 'somehow' it'll create cult status, catch on and make big money but if the general public was left feeling as unfulfilled as I was, this "work of art" will simply fade away with time as it deserves. 👎

Chadwick's memory deserves better! 😢
2 February 2023
The first Black Panther was a good movie (not great), but it was fun and engaging and I didn't feel like I'd been taken at the box office at all.

However, I feel like Hollywood owes me 4,000 rewards points because Wakanda Forever felt like two hours of pointless dialogue and 30 minutes of action.

If the performances weren't over done then they were woefully under done. The story was nothing but either politics of a nation that chose to deprive an ever dying world of much needed resources and technology or revere it's self for having such thing's.

Impossible to invest in the characters I just couldn't wait till it was over (I was with two ppl who love th MCU so I stayed.🤷).

Really disappointed! 👎

Cheap but not terribly nasty.

Warning: Spoilers
Yep, ok!?

Good acting (generally, always enjoy Gabriel Byrne), not bad production. Engaging plot line and characters. But absolutely no points in saving money on portraying the aliens as (wait for it).......... human's! And the only thing differentiating them from us is a tattoo of a couple of circle's on their hand.

I understand that Hollywood level computer graphics are still relatively expensive but if your going to make a sci-fi that automatically by it's name going to be trying to fill the shoes of several film's made before it, you at least want to support it with a budget that can do it justice spfx wise (the robot dog's are ok if you've never seen any of the advanced robotics videos posted on YouTube).

I sat through each episode thinking how good this could have been matching the expert skill of the production put into the initial build up with equal quality effects. Would have easily have made this a solid 8.5!

But instead it was like I was being asked not to ask about special effects and just take it as it is simply on existing merit.

Pity I'm neither that nieve nor artistically challenged enough to just put up and shut up.

7 out of 10 for a drama lover.

4 out of 10 for a sci-fi lover.

Bad Howard Overman, no Emmi for you.

Supergirl (2015–2021)

It's a bird, it's a plane, no. It's a political agenda!
12 December 2020
Admittedly the first season isn't too bad to watch. It has 'some' decent storytelling behind it if you can watch the original 50's Superman and enjoy it. But after that I found myself rolling my eye's at least once every episode because of one reason or another. Weather it be the stale script one liners or the predictable soapy style, character returns or even the glaringly obvious and increasingly cheapening political agendas constantly being slid under the door (and several other production reasons to mention), the show just left me with a bad taste in the mouth on an artistic and intellectual level. Hard to stomach and hard to believe because DC had an excellent chance to put some 'hope' back into the superhero fans of yesterday and today. As I watch, all I can think as a (former) DC fan is how much better a direction this could have been taken in, taking absolutely nothing away from the pc issues your constantly bashed over the head with and if anything giving men/women, straight or gay a realistic AND positive light while being exactly what it should have been. A SUPERHERO tv show which is what any superhero fan would be wanting to see. Not conscious/subconscious programming exercise in a superhero suit. Sad, disappointing, creepy, pathetic, arrogant. (P.S. Calista Flockheart's worst performance EVER! That achingly annoying Cat Grant character was pure garbage! 👍)

If you haven't see this try-hard travesty of a film, don't walk away. RUN! Paul makes an all to obvious 'grab for cash' using the fully established licence and in my opinion

Good fun but no classic, 6.5 really.
9 November 2020
I enjoyed then and I could watch it now easily. Good fun at best and a not bad action film (there's WAY worse Arnie films). Nothing compared to the first but then again even blind Freddie could see it's not trying to be. I'd say Paul was just appeasing to public demand, of which there would have been a massive amount proving the market was there to be had. And lets face it, the first one was a fluke as all film's generally are but I have always felt that II was a fairly well made answer given the boot's it was expected to fill. If nothing else, a great way to kill sum time and to be able to say 'I've seen it'! Still quite funny and well balanced direction and script to acting. It will always be a welcome addition to my DVD collection. 👍 🙂

Classic
9 November 2020
One of the best film's ever released in Australia if not one of the most innovative and we'll shot tounge in cheek comedy's of the time given the budget and materials they had to work with. A fun film that had a little of everything that never truly get's old despite the flaccid attempts to clutch at negative straws in the lesser reviews. A literal world beater (check out the makings of and interviews with Paul and the makers on Utube)! Good on ya' Paul! 👍

Generic tripe

Another 'is it real, isn't it real?!' piece of claptrap that has been done a thousand times. (Originally done well in Amityville horror & The Shining) The type of movie that can only be described as the LAZIEST type of film making available on offer. Nothing but empty dramatic cut scenes married with gratuitously loud score and you get to sit through 103 minutes of watching the actors wonder if they're Arthur or Martha. All beit some good performances by less than A grade actors and a few well placed shock moments which gave it it's 3 stars. But even they failed to invest me in the character's or engross me in the wafer thin story line. Difficult to believe the younger actress would grow up to look like the heroine with the poor American accent. Surely they could have found a better counterpart but it's as if they were determined to save money every way possible. So save your's and your 103 minutes and watch something else.

Good, Not great. 6.8
4 September 2019
I'm shocked at all the 10 & 9/10's this show is receiving. As tho people have gone blind to the simple novelty of what can really only be described as a cute spin off too a 'well made' & 'inevitable' teen cult summer flick. While this this show being unarguably a well acted, well written & fun production, it obviously and completely lacks the professional polish and timing let alone charm of the first two films (forget the following cash grab debacles) by a grainy, lackluster production. Followed by scenes that were lucky to have been thrown together by one or two takes and had classic 80's songs and well made scores (albeit a little over dramatic) plastered over the top for that enhanced dramatic effect. For what it was worth there were some truly funny gags and engaging aspects to the story, I felt that the over all story was forced and rather messy in the moral overtone where the actors, especially Daniel and Johnny, would routinely chop and change their minds as to weather or not to forgive & forget made it hard to take their characters seriously and be invested in the story. While I loved the original Karate Kid movies being that they were a great and memorable part of my early teen years, I really thought that if anyone were to approach a project like this one a lot more care and focus should be taken to honour the franchise that bought so much enjoyment to so many people over so many years. Once again, good, not great. Just fun.
