I loved the first 1:29 minutes of the move. It was absolutely ruined in the final 15 minutes. If you want to see why, read on. SPOILERS AHEAD.
I'm a HUGE Liam Neeson fan. I really can't think of any movies where he's played the lead that I didn't like, so I've been looking forward to this one. It starts off fast, and the story moves along a good pace. That ENDED with fifteen minutes left in the movie.
After getting shot in the hand (or broken glass cuts him), Robinson says "There's no chance in hell that I'm admitting to anything". Block puts the gun to his neck & Robinson dares him to shoot him saying he'd be better off. Block doesn't and says, "This needs to be told and YOU'RE going to be the one that tells it". Then he demands to know the location of his family. IS THAT ALL IT TOOK? He goes from 'No way in hell' to spilling his guts about the family and then going to the press on his own. They don't SHOW this, of course. Here's a man that was ready to die. Block tells him he's NOT going to kill him and what, he has an epiphany on his on? The next scene, Block is at his daughter's witness protection address picking her and the granddaughter up. WHAT?
Speaking of witness protection... why was that even in the movie? It played absolutely no strategic plot in the movie, and the movie never offered an explanation. It did provide some dialog for Neeson, but even that went nowhere. Not only that, but right before the daughter went into witness protection she was absolutely furious with Block and no longer wanted him to see the granddaughter. He had apologized multiple times before, but at the end of the movie he says, "I'm sorry" and all is forgiven? Happy Ever After?
This movie had SO much potential. It started off with mystery and intrigue and the story progressed nicely. The only intrigue and mystery at the end? It left me wondering why the hell the director would ruin a pretty good movie with one of the lamest endings I've ever seen. Unfortunately, that is still a mystery. It was as if the director said "OH CRAP, we're running out of time and money! Let's just have the guy confess and let Liam get his family back. Logic? Nah, we don't need logic. Let's just finish the movie.
Damn, I'm disappointed.
