Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
If only...
Harrison Ford is still believable as Indy. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was perfectly fine. I wasn't sure if she was too cheeky for an action movie like this, but she was good. Mads Mikkelsen is perfect as a villain in this type of movie. The guy just has the look for an Indiana Jones movie.
That all said, the cgi killed this movie, again. The story wasn't great either and the supernatural aspect of the story went too far to be believable and really pulled me out of the movie. After the substandard product of the Crystal Skull, no one seemed to learn the lesson. The cgi to make Harrison Ford look younger was okay. A little distracting because he certainly doesn't look that age anymore, but acceptable.
The Color of Money (1986)
A movie that has grown on me over time
I'd guess I was 15-18 the first time I saw this movie and it's really grown on me as I've reached middle age. Both this and the Hustler are movies that don't move with a lot of speed, but, build and build over the course of it's run.
I don't have a lot of confidence in anyone's ability to continue on with a third movie that would meet the level of the first two movies, but as of today Tom Cruise is the same age as Paul Newman was in 1986. A third movie with Cruise could be fantastic (particularly if he was the bad guy which I'd say Vincent evolves into over the course of Color of Money). A really well written story continuing on with the idea of Hustling and the Senior / Junior relationship could be really, really interesting in 2023's modern life...
X2 (2003)
Awesome!!
This movie is awesome! It did a really great job of exploring the level of the mutants powers. I cannot seem to decide which powers I would like to have the most. They all seem so unique and amazing. I thought that this sequel made with a great sense of continuing the original, and where it left us the viewers. As to be expected, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan were outstanding. Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, etc. were also great. I thought that this movie was slightly better than the first one, mostly because the characters were already established and there was more time to explore the powers that they possessed.
The Truth About Charlie (2002)
Good, but with a few short-comings.
This movie is very good. Thandie Newton does a terrific job! She is absolutely beautiful, and is very very funny. She does a wonderful job as the lead character. She plays Regina Lambert a little more independent than Audrey Hepburn did. Newton really pulls the movie along, especially when considering Mark Wahlberg's performance. This is an incident of poor casting. Wahlberg tries to play the character too seriously when compared to the performances of the rest of the cast. He does not pull of the "fool" aspect of his character either. Now, to get back to the positives, Tim Robbins is very entertaining. His seens' are quite amusing and captivating. Christine Boisson portrays a very strong character with an incredibly strong performance. I cannot say that I am familiar with her work, but I think it safe to say I might enjoy it as well.
The Truth About Charlie is a good movie. Compared with Charade, I would say that "Charlie" is one poor casting and a few holes in the screenplay from being as good as Charade.
Igby Goes Down (2002)
A little Dark, but a great script and excellent performances.
This is a very well written screenplay. Burr Steers has done a wonderful job assembling very diverse characters and has woven their dialogues together in a very seamless manner. Kieran Culkin does an amazing job with this bold of a script. He drives the movie well, alongside this all-star cast. Ryan Phillippe does a good job playing Igby's older brother. Susan Sarandon gives a magnificent job as the villain of Igby's life, so much so that you can't help to like her somewhat. Claire Danes is good as the love interest. Amanda Peet pulls off a very odd character, Rachel, that is hard to describe. Finally, Jeff Goldblum plays a great scumbag character, as Igby's godfather.
Overall I highly recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys a movie that is a little odd, a little dark, a little far-fetched, and has a great screen play that is fun and witty.
