Slow mo splatter gore with actors you know
6 March 2019
The subject is the only pro to this movie. Everything else is terrible. The violence could've been a 2 minute Mortal Kombat 10 highlight. If that isn't your thing, then there is no redeeming quality to this movie. Not worth it for bad movie night. This needed more wild personality and insane dialogue, but instead it's an illogical bland plot orchestrated by, surrounded by, and full of morons. The whole town would have to be a meth disaster at the elementary school level for this to work. Mortal Kombat 11 fatalities are better than this whole movie.

Alien and Aliens were a fluke
3 August 2017
The first two films featured characters that made mostly rational and consistent decisions based on their own knowledge, experience, logic and goals. Then the third movie mixes things up with a crazy and unnecessary prison planet whose results were about as effectual as the abysmal script writing process (FOX ruined things here pretty much). And then the fourth movie, a dark comedy where basically everyone descends from Idiocracy rather than Blade Runner. Queue Prometheus, where people groan as the science officer does a 180 and plays with the black goo cobra. Then the audience outright laughs as someone effectively fails to turn from running under a giant rolling wheel. At this point of the series, I've accepted the denizens of the Aliens universe are extremely dim, inconsistent, and prone to getting Darwin Awards anytime on camera, so as we arrive at Alien: Covenant, I can empathize with the dark turn of the plot and that the humans are boringly ill-equipped at making any correct choices for logical survival. So instead of a 2/10 (great sets and cool sketches), I award another 4 points for the idiot humans who you're happy to see die over and over. 6/10

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Starts slow, but really ramps up to a very enjoyable action spy thriller.
27 July 2017
The 80's neon style, glam and decor are pretty cool in contrast to East Berlin, but the soundtrack incorporation is what really stands out. In the 2000 movies I've seen, I'd say this has the best background music selection, ins, and outs. The heavy techno bass mixing really does theater viewing justice vs home options. I can also listen to Kaleida's downtempo 99 Luftballons on repeat, so thank you to the movie for that.

Then there is the fight choreography and fight cinematography; perfect. No hard to comprehend shaky cam masking a lack of actor skills or composition. And the beatings taken and delivered over and over just increase the smile on the viewers face.

The plot is suspenseful and the turns a fun ride to follow, giving out just enough while keeping the culmination satisfying. I even look forward to seeing it again.

Stunningly fun. Like playing a great video game without dying to get things just right.
7 April 2016
I was definitely already a fan of the Biting Elbows music video that gave rise, but was unprepared for the roller coaster of awesome that doesn't let up for 90 minutes. I don't know if it was the 98 foot Frank's FDX screen or just a more attached rig, but some of the action was shaky and a little hard to follow, especially when Henry would get moved or tossed around. Without a sense of motion, you can lose your bearings. Being an avid FPS gamer will really help here. I'd recommend not filling your vision to the periphery with the screen (like the front 1/3rd point, where I sat) and choose a middle screen height position, which will make it more like a computer monitor experience. That said, I still found it easier to follow then the hand to hand combat in the early Bourne films, and more enjoyable. The audio is a blast with a good system, so don't wait until it gets to the crappy 30 seat theaters with the turned down speakers the megaplexes seem to tuck away in unused corners.

Sharlto Copley is extremely fun to watch in this film and did a great job not being the same character in District 9, and Elysium, proving far far from it (not a fan of Chappie, but he did well in that too).

There are so many oo, ahh, wow, and shock moments in this film. I really want to see a sequel and would definitely be happy to help fund it if they go that route again.

I think I will be seeing this again.

tldr: if you grew up with or are a fan of FPS games, this movie is amazingly fun.

Last Vegas (2013)
10/10
the trailer looked bad, but Last Vega was very very enjoyable
22 November 2013
Where I'm coming from: I'm 32. I enjoyed The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (also about "geriatics") as well as the younger skewing Hangover series. Last Vegas is really a great blending of the two. Less hard hitting drama than TBEMH, but more realistic and genuine (less slapsticky/ridiculousness) than Hangover. I've attended 16 gofobo screenings this year and this is by far my favorite. I wasn't that excited after watching the trailer before clicking yes, but it was an open night, I generally enjoy the actors (though they've each had some misses) and I figured why not. I think the audience seemed similarly skeptic, but I'm sure my opinion colored that a bit. Unlike the trailer, the movie started pretty strong, with theater rippling laughs at the start. Throughout the movie, the laughs only increased and the audience had a very positive happy feeling that made the experience even more enjoyable. Psychologically, the polar swing from bad trailer to pleasant viewing is likely to make more adamant fans than otherwise. Count me as one, but that's not a bad thing. I don't usually like a packed theater, and enjoy the opposite empty one, but I would even prefer the full audience experience in this case. The drama or emotional elements weren't overdone, and added to the story and impact and didn't take away in a cheesy fashion. The actors have great chemistry and their roles are written well, with palpable offscreen history in many of their looks and interactions. It was also fun from time to time to recognize traits from my grandparents or friends' parents in the characters. I highly recommend Last Vegas. It's a drama with a lot of good feeling laughs - my girlfriend almost peed her pants.

A rarity for me, I look forward to seeing it again with friends and family. 7-8/10 against the world of film, 10/10 judging it for what it is.

Warm Bodies (2013)
8/10
enjoyable, cute, unconventional zomedy
4 February 2013
With a fresh point of view and a lack of unnecessary drama (unlike most of the recent Dawn of the Dead type films), this film is a real treat for the zombie fan. The baddies (skeletons) and the leader of the good guys aren't developed much or are very 1 dimensional, but the main character and his supports are great fun. This aspect makes it feel a bit like a short story/graphic novel where a larger scope was attached for the film but not developed.

The soundtrack and use of music throughout was a big plus for me. I wouldn't have minded some more R/TV-M type gore (walking dead), but for PG-13, there are still a few entertaining hits.

That said, this one is worth paying for.

sometimes silly, sometimes drama, often entertaining
20 November 2012
Ever wonder how mental families keep spawning more kids? Honey Boo Boo away with the start of the next generation of a football Philly fan family complete with anger issue dad. Heir to the family rage meets whoring-as- therapy relative-of-friend's-wife and crazy slow romance ensues. I found myself entertained, often chuckling, sometimes shaking my head, and other times a little irritated at the sometimes not-so-little foibles of the many personalities on screen. It's a romantic comedy that stands a bit apart from the others, but I didn't find it as funny, light, or charming as 50 First Dates, my more preferred zany plot romcom. 6 or 7 out of 10.

Funny fun time. Entertaining valentines release.
2 February 2012
I almost started off hating this movie before I had seen it; I thought the trailer looked like crap, with horrible comedic dialog and premises, but I took the chance on free screening tickets, figuring I could make fun at worst. The film opens with shooting at the hip action and stays pretty entertaining in comedy and delivery. Witherspoon's character's sister (Chelsea Handler) and their interactions are lots of fun. Chris Pine does a good job being semi-typecast and the movie doesn't take itself too seriously. It's way better than expected and I wouldn't have been upset had I paid full price for it. Like a review I read said, it's a romantic movie that guys won't have to be dragged to. Is it a great movie? No. Is it a fun valentines movie? Yes.

for the first time in ages, I am actually looking forward to the next James Bond movie
17 November 2006
Realism finds its way into the situations, action sequences, characters, and even their personalities – a significance because depth is almost always lacking in this area. Many of the past bond films had a certain amount of silliness to them that the actors and audiences were in on – I always felt that this was sort of an easy way out of having to find ways to make things fit, the sort of Adam West's Batman that eventually fueled Austin Powers. Don't worry, the bond character and lines are still there, but this time his character and those on the receiving end are in on the fun as well. As an origin story, this movie gives valuable insight into a James Bond that you hope sticks around. Daniel Craig is awesome.

Peter Bradshaw @ the Guardian says it to well to necessitate a rewrite: "It is all ridiculously enjoyable… For the first time in ages, I am actually looking forward to the next James Bond movie."

A Bloody Aria (2006)

a hard movie with hard topics - mainly the bullying aspect of Korean society
30 September 2006
"Director Won takes a refreshingly different approach to what could have been a standard tale of city folks menaced by crazy bumpkins, mainly in that he serves up an off-key set of characters, none of whom really fit into the traditional roles viewers are used to. The film does not feature an obvious protagonist, or even an anti-hero, and although some of the characters are more vicious than others, it gradually becomes clear that all are victims in one way or another. Despite this, the characters are well drawn, and the viewer learns about them through a series of revelations which unfold in a surprising, though believable manner.

None of the relationships in the film are straightforward, with some of them emerging as being very twisted, and through this, Won ventures into some fairly complex moral territory, and explores the effects of institutions such as the army. The film is chiefly concerned with themes of bullying, which it actually deals with in quite a subtle manner and on several levels, dealing with both the aggressors and victims in a fluid way which eschews stereotyping or easy answers. The lines between right and wrong are not so much blurred as thrown out of the window, as the characters gradually become more and more animalistic, yet at the same time, somehow more human, giving the proceedings an almost tragic feel."

explanation of bad score - really an excellent movie
19 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is vague to avoid spoilers, but the nature of the bad votes is because the movie's message and depth is beyond the average viewer, especially when considering many of IMDb's voters won't be watching this in it's native language, so the already purposely puzzling Mystery/Thriller aspects of the story coupled with the unique message concerning the title, The Scarlet Letter, could cause confusion with either plot thread, making the movie unsuccessful to that viewer. About the title, it should make sense after the last 5-10 minutes of the movie and is probably not what most people would think after watching the prior 95% OR being familiar with the original Scarlet Letter.

Give this whole movie a chance, feel free to talk it out with friends during the movie (it is a mystery) and be...moved or awed at the end. For a mood, be ready for a darker ending than most movies (not the same dark as say Arlington Road though). It wraps up well and should leave you feeling OK.

10/10. The movie really achieves what it aspired for and remains thoughtful in a usually "for entertainment only" genre (murder/mystery).

perfect ending song too, reminiscent of Oldboy (2004). otherwise low-key soundtrack that is well done. Don't let the Korenglish song sung early on by 1 character put you off.

possibly the worst movie I have ever seen
9 June 2005
watch it and laugh at how awful the dialogue, how contrived and illogical the action, and how utterly without merit the movie is. What a waste of a cool premise with a bad antihero. I was expecting a good bad action flick, like the recent Cradle 2 the Grave, Bad Boys 2, and even Exit Wounds, but this was worthless. I wouldn't consider this a spoiler. The movie starts with dumb cops dying from really dumb mistakes and continues with more dumb cops dying/hit squad deaths. I would really hope a special combat team and even normal cops could handle combat better than a paintball or video game player, but this movie's combat could've been dreamed up by 8 yearolds in 1 try. The reason I say 1 try is because I'm sure they would have improvements after seeing the first take.

does justice to the source, validates 3D rendering for anime characters, and exceeds expectations
22 January 2005
rating - 10/10 (saw it subbed). I would give it an 11 if I could. After reading a 5.6/10 and watching, the movie far exceeded any expectation I had, that I could have dreamed of. Having read all of the manga and data books, this movie not only captures but adds to them. The 3D style looks better in motion than in screen shots, validating its place in Anime's future (for characters, Ghost in the Shell already displayed the awesome extent to which environments can benefit). The mechanical engineering (just wait until you see the cannons) of EVERYTHING is superlative. The complexity and detail of the city is awe inspiring. Every scene has this attention to detail. And the action? Just watch the beginning of the movie to understand how cool the ride is going to be, because I assure you, it does not let up. Well worth any price of admission.

This is a work of love, a commitment to total quality. I see the score increasing rapidly in the near future.

Thank you Shinji Aramaki, Masamune Shirow (comic)

Haruka Handa (screenplay) & Tsutomu Kamishiro (screenplay)

Spoiler - Plot Summary -
22 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is a quote from a great contributer to another forum that may help some of you out with the plot(it helped me out). ".:: S T O R Y ::. Jiney studies Photography in a university. She is academic, sexy and rich. Rumor has it in her school that she is a lesbian with her classmate, Jasmine. Although her photos achieve great successes in both public and school, she is still not satisfied with her work. There are still missing parts. One day, on Jiney's way to school, a woman is knocked down by a car and dies horribly. Jiney witnesses the accident; and is at first scared than excited, she gets closer and closer to the body and finally takes a photo. After she experienced the excitement during printing the photo of the dead in her basement, she finally finds out what are the missing parts of her work.

It is blood, the moment of death. Since then, Jiney has a new feeling towards photography, that is, to capture the moment of death. She starts to shoot dead animals. This gives her fulfillment but can't last for long. These photos are not as good as the one of that dead woman.

She knows she needs dead human bodies. By chance, she sees a girl standing on top of a building. Jiney holds her camera tightly in hands begging the girl to jump off the top. The girl jumps, she instinctively takes a series of shots for her. Unlike the last experience, she experiences sexual climax when the girl's dress is blown up and she has a glance at her private part. Jiney becomes worried and afraid of what she is going to do. Jiney knows it is wrong but she can't help herself."

engaging crime/mystery/drama that's worth seeing
27 August 2004
Simon Loui's performance as the brooding work-obsessed detective, Pang, who routinely sleep deprives both himself and his team to get the job done is the best thing the movie has to offer. The soundtrack may turn off viewers not familiar/fans of the similar-to-american-80's HK style, as it can be jarring as a first time experience (think the soundtrack Ladyhawke, starring Rutger Hauer, Pfeiffer, and Broderick, but not quite so bad).

The common and real theme of corruption in the Chinese police is present in the plot, but in an understanding way, like the characters grew up knowing that's the way things are. The viewer can easily follow Pang and his intense focus on the case. I found the plot a little hard to unravel before the culmination, but this may be an issue of Chinese names and having to read English subtitles. I believe the clues are there for you cinema sleuths out there. In any event, if the viewer can get past the soundtrack, the movie is very riveting and entertaining. As a low budget HK movie, this one is very good, but lacks the polish of any large production. After the culmination, the movie feels a little lacking, but the ride to that point was enjoyable. Perhaps this feeling derives from the budget, but it's hard to place. The film, colors, and settings aren't bad and do not stand out as low-budget.

Rating 6-6.5 against all films and a 7-8 compared to its low budget brethren.

I rated it a 7 on IMDb.

Worth seeing. Oh, and if you like the ending, please post in the forums and tell me why.

Would've given it a 10 but for the shaky fight scene
24 July 2004
Being familiar with another of the director's movies, bloody sunday, I can say this too is a great movie marred only by a couple occurrences of overzealous camera style, particularly the shaky/jerky/odd angle camera work during a hand to hand battle. The audible audience (around me) seemed confused as to what was going on. My companions and I preferred the first movies close combat better. Aside from that, a great movie that keeps one riveted throughout.

10/10 - 1 for bizarre fight camera = 9/10

I am eagerly awaiting Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Ultimatum, seeing how both this and the last movie delivered a range of characters, car chases, gun, knives, hand-to-hand, and bas rutton's favorite - ambiance- combat, all tied with an attention to logic and detail. A very enjoyable theater experience that will likely earn Bourne Supremacy a place on my shelf.

simply stunning. an refreshing twist to the mystery/thriller genre
8 July 2004
I'm not a fan of Lynch. I did like the similar style of Memento. The style that tries to defy the viewers ability to guess exactly what is going to happen. Oldboy isn't like (name a lynch film). You don't have to read about it later to understand what is going on. This film is very accessible and truely horrifying. I feel like buying this movie by the crate and giving it as a gift to those who appreciate movies and who have seen 1000s. After seeing 1000s of movies, this one is a gem all the more for every movie you've seen that you thought it was just like..when it turns out to be unique.

I'm writing because I have changed my stance on the film, I like it and think you may too
7 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I took the time to write this because I had to come back to IMDB and change my original score of a 6 to a 10. After trying to understand the German, Spanish, and Chiricahuan (Indian) to correctly represent it in English, I noticed how beautiful this film was as stills and in motion. The dance between actors, frame focus, and camera movement has never been clearer to me than after my task. Every shot composition is meticulously gorgeous.

This movie really needs to be viewed as a whole, judged only after it is complete and not during the film (which I am always guilty of). At first I faulted the film for quickly covering a lot of ground, for seemingly bizarre transitions between plot stages, and short time spent on/in many interesting characters/situations. After watching the film once, and not liking it all that much, I thought about it (as I wrote a better subtitle file) and realized how much better everything is "after the fact" - after watching it. Some people may say a movie is bad if it requires 2 viewings to appreciate and that is valid. A good memory and a moment to reflect after the credits roll should change any viewers negative opinion on Blueberry as entertainment, a story, a depiction of the classic comic book, a movie, and finally art.

This movie is definitely worth a purchase as an adventure tale similar to great comics.

It is not an Action movie. It is like the Indiana Jones series rather than the films, giving more story of a larger time period than more action in a short time period.

The Animation is CG that represents the mystical ~cacti induced Indian experiences.

Pay attention to the beginning credits. Better yet, watch them again after watching the movie. They will make a lot more sense.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Best of the trilogy, best book adaptation yet, probably ever
17 December 2003
This may well be my favorites movie of all time for all time, and the longest of my favorites too. Somehow I found myself in the choice middle seats at 12am on the 17th. Despite being sleep deprived after exams and work, the movie kept me alert, neigh, riveted. I recommend this movie over any other fantasy. The CG will have my respect forever, as will Peter Jackson and all involved. Let me say Thank You to Tolkien, Walsh and everyone that made this movie possible.

Transparent, Predictable, awful
1 May 2003
This movie is without doubt for mental deficients. The whole plot is revealed in the first 5 to 10 minutes. My friends and I joked that X was the plot in the begining and expecting some sort of twist because they make it so obvious, but no..no twist. In fact, the "twist" is just plain stupid. Worth seeing to scratch your head and say "why?" to the ending.

Almost perfect movie, still, painfully funny
8 April 2001
Adam Sandler's best, by far. This movie is funny from start to finish. I don't understand why people complain about Chubbs wooden hand, it's obviously fake, thats whats so funny. If you look in goofs, it says u can see his hand...u can see it the whole time, his frickin prosthetic is about 2 feet longer than it should be (exaggeration maybe). Adam is having a good time as usual, and he is really funny in this movie, where as in some other ones, just strange. The only part I didnt like is Bob Barker winning a fight. I guess that was his stipulation for doing the movie, but he fights like a sissy, not that Sandler looks like he can fight..although he does play a hockey player..sigh.. Great movie, don't take it seriously. have a good time like sandler 10/10

The Fist Of Legend of Kung-Fu type action. THE BEST OF THE GENRE
12 February 2001
This movie is amazing. If you like wire cable martial arts with a little bit of fantasy thrown in (wire cables are used to show extreme strength (jumping all over and powerful kicks 0r antigravity kung fu) then this has to be the best martial arts movie to date. It parallels The Fist of Legend (more realistic martial arts movie, incredible) as a must see. Yuen Woo Ping says it all.

even as a fan of vampires, this movie is god awful
12 February 2001
This movie is all around bad. Kiefer looks like a great villain or vampire, but he seems to be a mentally challenged biker in this movie. In fact, everyone seems mentally challenged. The actions of the characters, the plot, seems to follow no logical pattern. Maybe this movie explores some unorthodox attribute of vampirism where any environment with vampires becomes a mire of morons. The action sequences almost don't exist. You don't see anything. I would describe it but this movie doesnt even fuel a desire to describe how awful it is. It is pathetic. So see this movie for yourself or dont, its probably not worth it even when its free.

As good now as it was when I watched it as a kid...
12 February 2001
First of all, I like fantasy movies. I like Jim Henson and David Bowie; this movie bolstered my love for these people and the genre of fantasy. The soundtrack is great, the scenery lavish and intriguing, and the acting perfect. The only thing I wouldve liked to have been different are David Bowies pants..lol This is one of the best "kids" movies I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. I recommend Legend, Willow, and The Dark Crystal, and The Last Unicorn as movies in a similar vein. I guess part of me, a big part, is a big kid. Enjoy.
