Random Harvest (1942)
The most romantic movie ever made.
Period.Even more so than "Casablanca."
The only movie that comes close to "Random Harvest" in sheer heart-wrenching romanticism is"Golden Earrings," with Ray Milland and Marlene Dietrich. Now THOSE were movies!! Yes,I'm stuck in the 40's,and very happy to be there! I cannot get enough of Ronald Colman's voice, especially in this movie. He has the most beautiful inflections of any actor I've heard,on par with Orson Welles,I think, but in a different way. I won't give away any plot twists, but suffice it to say there is one heart-grabbing scene that knocks you out. This movie is not to be missed by sentimental saps who loves black and white movies from the 40's.This is one of the very best.
Keeping Up Appearances (1990)
Funniest woman on the planet
I have been watching "KuA" faithfully for a few years now. I have to say that Great Britain has produced the two best actors in recorded history: Ricky Gervais,of "The Office," and this wonderful lady. I apologize ahead of time to all of Lucille Ball's fans, but in my opinion, for what it's worth, there is no comparison between the two women. "Hyacinth" wins hands down.I never tire of her voice,or her physical comedy.Just tonight I was watching an episode, and actually choked on my drink because I was laughing so hard. Thank you BBCA,for airing this show daily. I understand Ms. Routledge is a national treasure in England,as well she should be. I only wish she was appearing in new episodes...it would have been interesting to see how Hyacinth changed,if at all.I simply adore her,and poor Richard, too. All of the regular actors who appear on the show are marvelous.I intend to buy every DVD set or single special episode of the series.
The World's Fastest Indian (2005)
So good I watched it in segments to prolong it!!
I have already choked up 4 times and Burt just arrived at Bonneville. Not sad tears. Heart-swelling tears. Anthony Hopkins, whom I absolutely adore,is so good in this wonderful movie,I have actually forgotten it is "him,"so sweet and dear is his presentation of the gentleman from New Zealand. His dialect is perfect..All thoughts of Hannibal are out the window: Anthony IS Burt Munro.I watched the extra with the real Burt Munro after the movie, and he really was a sweet and dear old coot.. brave..determined,and rascally. I would have really loved the guy!!! The time frame of the movie is set in the early 60's,and Burt's Coming to America adventure was filled with lots of people who just immediately liked and respected him, with good reason: his goodness.kindness and determination shone through.. Please see this movie, not only for Sir Anthony's amazing performance, but because it is the true story of a true individualist, who set his eyes on his dream and went for it,whole-hog. Or whole-Indian,I should say. This is not to be missed.Where is Sir Anthony's Oscar, somebody?????
House Calls (1978)
So romantic it hurts....
when I know that Walter will never grace another set.I was in my 30's when I first saw this sweet, endearing and unabashedly romantic film.I loved it from the first scene, and all the way through to the end.Art Carney was his usual daft self; Glenda matched Walter step for step in the witticisms;and Richard Benjamin supplied the sarcastic voice of reason that he does so well.Along the way there were many actors whom we all recognize, doing their usual brilliance. There are a couple of lines in the movie which my SO and I have used throughout the years, but I won't say anything about them here.I'm pretty sure you will know which two I am talking about. Just get this movie.Make some popcorn, grab your squeeze(if he is as sappy as mine is,for which I am thankful),and enjoy this standout romantic comedy from the 70's. You will not be disappointed. However,I have the feeling that I am preaching to the choir here because anyone who loves Walter will already own it.I'm very glad it's out on DVD now, finally.
