Unforgettable...Brilliant Masterpiece
10 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A brilliant cartoon from the 70's based on a book with the same title. I've never read the book, but as a cartoon this is one of the best. Very sad, surreal, dark and even very disturbing in some places(Especially when the donkey gets ripped apart or when the mice got crushed by a rock). I was quite old when i saw this(14 yrs)and it was still upsetting(and heartbreaking, i almost cried in some scenes). The music is wonderful, especially the theme song, one of the loveliest songs i've heard in my life. But still i'd rather watch a movie that makes me think about it long after it ended than just another sugar coated hypocritical Disney-esquire movie. This is not just a kids' movie, as i said i watched it when i was quite old and still found it interesting and intriguing. I've never seen a cartoon that's as thought-provoking as this. This is a work of art(but sadly very few have heard of it,while everybody's seen The Lion King which was stolen from the Japanese manga Kimba!). Anyway,i'd recommend this to older kids and any adults willing to watch something new and unexpected from an animation whose target audience is supposed to be kids. 10/10

Brilliant early anime classic.
7 August 2006
I bought a VHS copy just the other day on the internet. It's a brilliant retro anime classic. I always loved it ever since i first saw it when i was a kid. It seems to be largely forgotten and the chances of it being released on DVD are very poor. Fans of classic anime will love it. It gives a picture of a happier more interesting future than that shown in other darker sci-fi movies. The English dub wad made by the same actors who did all those old kung-fu movies(If you've seen Lama vs Shaolin, then you'll notice that the voice of the leading actor is that of Ken's). Brilliant music too by Joe Hisaishi(yes, the same guy who wrote the music for most of Hayao Miyazaki's movies). I think it's very cool and entertaining movie even if you haven't seen it before. It's not too long either(about 80 mins)and the plot is simple(Bad guys steal a tank and the good guys have to get it back). Lucky for me the copy i bought was still sealed and very cheap. Get a copy if you can. Highly entertaining. 10/10

Classic Anime From Osamu Tezuka
28 July 2006
I first watched this film when i was about 10. I didn't really like it then though i thought it was a bit weird and even scary. I only saw it again a few days ago when i found a VHS copy on the internet, that's 14 years after i first saw it. I'll have to say it's not the best anime of all time, and it's not the place to start if you're not a fan. But i loved it all the same as it reminds me of my childhood. My memories of it were right as it was weird though not scary. The animation was OK but the problem was the direction as it was very patchy. So if you don't like anime or Tezuka then don't bother. But it is definitely worth investigating, and frankly i prefer it over the newer animes which seem to be more about the animation and the special effects than the story or characters. Another thing about this movie is that it has great music. The version i've got is the dubbed version which as usual is crap. I know that it's been released on DVD(region 4),i hope it gets a release in the UK. 10/10

The coolest anime of all time.
18 June 2006
This is one of the coolest cartoons i've ever seen. It features two of the first and greatest robots of all time,Great Mazinger and getter Robot. I first saw this when i was about 8 and i've loved it ever since. The action is brilliant and the animation is great(no CGI crap of course, just pure brilliant animation). It also features Jun and Boss Borot(which also appears in the Mazinger Z,Great Mazinger, and UFO grendizer series'). This is one of many other movies to feature Great Mazinger. Some of the others are Great Mazinger vs Grendizer, Great Mazinger vs Grendizer vs Getter Robot G, and another great movie is Mazinger Z vs Devilman, all classics. These movies are still widely available and in remastered versions on the Internet(try Ebay). 10/10

Best kung-fu film of all time.
17 June 2006
Yuen biao is the man. I think he's one of the best actors in Hong Kong whether it's martial arts or not, it's just ridiculous that he's never been nominated in the best actor category at the Hong Kong awards. I've seen this film about 30 times now. It's one of the few kung-fu films that i can watch from beginning to end, as usually i go straight to the fights. The kung-fu is brilliant, very fast, very realistic, and very precise. The end fight is pure genius, fast and furious. The fight between Frankie Chan and Lam Ching Ying is brilliant too, and the training sequences... this film is just perfect. Brilliant camera work, slick editing and great music. More people should see this film to see the pure genius of Sammo Hung,Yuen Biao, and the brilliant Lam Ching Ying. It doesn't have as many fights as the other old skool kung-fu movies, but believe me this movie rocks. 10/10

The best animated film of all time.
13 May 2006
This is the most brilliant cartoon i've ever seen. Striking imagery, great imagination, and brilliant music. Actually it's worth watching for the music alone. It's about a young girl(Alice)and her dads' travels in space where they meet a lot of weird characters and creatures. It's very dreamy and psychedelic like a weird 70's sci-fi movie. The version i've got is in Russian,so i didn't know what the hell was going on, but that makes it even more dreamy and mysterious. You can tell it's Russian by the distinctive animation. I know that it's been remastered and released in the USA with famous Hollywood actors doing all the voices with the music changed. The American version is part of the Stories From My Childhood series(which should be avoided by all costs, because they're all been "disneyfied"). I bought my copy from ebay and i think there is another copy( "RUSSIAN DVD","MULTFEIERVERK" N4, "CARTOONS" ). This DVD also has other brilliant Russian cartoons which are a million times more worth the money.Highly recommended. 10/10
