South Park: Board Girls (2019)
Just what America needed.
Hilarious... Social commentary... Intertwined plot lines... Smart references (actual games and youtube channels)... One liners. Trey and Matt, please keep this up!
Carnival Row (2019)
A neat and dark fantasy
Started watching this out of pure curiosity without any kind of recommendations, insight, nor expectations. I was searching for something to fill my free time after a fairly decent but only semi-climactic season of Jack Ryan.
I was immediately hooked! It's a really cool world with a realistic take on what living in that kind of fantasy world would be like, especially with the segregation, fear and scandals. I just read so many reviews that claimed the show was making a political statement trying to mirror our country's immigration issues. I really don't feel like those parallels are there. That's just how things would likely be, and also have been throughout our own history.
This show really pulls no punches, displaying the cruelty and hate that people are capable of. The world is very well constructed with an early to mid 1800's feel in terms of human technologies. The set pieces are great, the acting is top notch, and the story is very well constructed, only giving you breadcrumbs until the big reveals. One reveal in particular had me a bit choked up even though I saw it coming.
This show is not for the jaded action-seekers who might be too dumb to appreciate the careful pacing of the first few episodes. This story takes its time at times but the payoff is worth it.
Carnival Row: Grieve No More (2019)
Not for jaded peabrains
We see just how deep the bigotry in this world goes, we see much more of the cool magic and lore that is possible in this world, and a huge secret is revealed in an amazingly emotional scene. My favorite episode so far.
Chernobyl: Vichnaya Pamyat (2019)
Powerful
I was fortunately able to visit Chernobyl in October 2016 and learned its tragic history as well as witnessed hundreds of workers(on two hour shifts) constructing the semi-permanent containment facility. The now ghost-town of Pripyat was beautifully shot, and I noticed many scenes that were clearly filmed on-site. This mini-series was masterfully done, sticking to the core truths behind the events while allowing you to live through the griping perspectives for the heroes involved. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys any genre.
