A textbook action flick
1 April 2010
Back then when the movie was out, I saw it as just another movie about saving kidnapped loved ones. When I finally get to watch this, it turns out that I was wrong.

The movie was simple and straightforward. It was about this guy who used to be a field operative for the CIA. He retired because he wanted to spend time with his daughter and such. Later in the story, his daughter was kidnapped by someone and this is when he vows to save his daughter and kill whoever that did this. (I pray to God IMDb doesn't consider this spoiler.)

The story turned out the way I thought it would. Most events unfolded the way I expected it to. It was lacking twists as well. So generally speaking, it's very very predictable. However, there is this one thing that clearly distinguishes it as a unique piece from the others.

This one piece being character definition. The writer did a fantastic job in defining the characters early in the movie. You understand why each character had this thought or did this etc. And the best thing about this is that the writers managed to define the characters through detailed, and yet usual, daily actions (eg. buying a gift for daughter's birthday), so it doesn't fell crammed in at all. It felt natural as they show us the sides of the characters.

On top of that, the actors were simply great in this one. Liam Neeson is awesome as usual. Maggie Grace is surprisingly good, and is definitely worth looking out for. The others did a good job as well.

Notice my comment on the movie being "textbook"? Yes, it's as generic as it gets, but the way they managed to present it makes the whole experience a fresh and engaging one. And it being "textbook" is also a compliment, because while they didn't put in some fancy new ideas, they did pull out everything that is required to make a good action flick, and gave those elements some nice waxing and polishing.

To conclude, it's a must watch for everyone.

Fire & Ice (2008 TV Movie)

Painfully bad
1 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is so bad that I didn't even bother to finish it.

The story is simple. We have this kingdom called Carpia or something. People living there used to be happy and all that stuff until a fire dragon strikes simply because it felt like destroying things. After all, that's what dragons do. The burn stuff and kill stuff. So the tomboy princess of the kingdom decides to be a hero and tries to reach an ex-knight who is known for being someone who knows ways to defeat a dragon. Unknown to her though, this ex-knight happens to be dead. However, he has a son so everything's OK. So the tomboy princess reaches this guy and asks him to get rid of the dragon, which he kindly refuses at first. He eventually agrees when she offered to pay him. I guess it's probably because: "Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M., get the money, dollar dollar bill ya'll" - Wu Tang Clan Meanwhile, the king is being persuaded to give in to the terms offered by the evil ruler of another kingdom in order to keep the dragon away.

Seriously, if any of you who actually plan to watch this expect this to be as good as any fantasy-related blockbuster movie, then there's a problem with you. But this movie is flat out bad. Yes, even by TV movie standards. TV movies are known for having cheesy and amateur script writing as well as B- acting, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are always bad. On occasion, they are fun to watch. XIII is a great example.

This movie however, has a really terrible script. While most things in the plot do add up, the characters are incredibly weak (A dragon slayer who cares only about money but later becomes a hero? I'm damned). No matter what they do, you just can't help but think that's just stupid (Charging in while the guards are changing shifts isn't an advantage). And given the fact that this is supposed to be set in the medieval times, there shouldn't be any projectors present at the time.

Of course, given that this movie has a horrendous script, it's difficult to expect any good acting to be seen. It's actually surprising to see Arnold Vosloo in this flick, as you know, he had always been a good actor and was very consistent. Most of the actors/actresses are bad in this one, especially Amy Acker. I have to admit I'm kind of a Amy Acker fan. Still, I have to say that she's horrible in this one. If you can't perform well due to a bad script, at least get the accent right. In this case, her accent is just flat out unbearable. You can clearly hear the American accent in every line she says. Seriously, a Chinese like me can play out an English/Irish accent better than her, and it's not even like I'm good at playing accents. Amy Acker is just annoying the this flick.

Maybe whoever in this film participated for a paid vacation? That's the best explanation I could come up with.

The soundtrack and the CGI stands out in a positive way, not because they're extremely good, but because the other aspects didn't quite work out. That's why it's surprising to see watchable CGI and a somewhat original soundtrack which was actually close to bringing up the tone in the movie.

To be honest, had this movie live up to its potential, it wouldn't score more than 6 or 7 out of 10. The whole movie was a bad idea to begin with anyway. This is also why I'm surprised to see a theatrical release in Romania, as this disaster wouldn't even qualify for a straight-to-DVD release.

TV movies doesn't necessarily mean bad movies. While they are actually stereotyped as cheesy, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. I enjoy cheesy movies and lines. I enjoy corny love-hate relationships and all that. You don't need a huge budget to make something great, you just need the heart and determination. You can clearly see that all of those who were somehow related to the production of this movie don't have the heart to make a good movie.

And one more thing, Sci Fi should stick to science fiction.

Unnecessarily Long
24 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Another summer blockbuster...

I'll cut straight to the point. The movie isn't bad, it feels polished and looks okay. One of the huge things about the movie is the plot. It has way more twists than the first one, but nothing really awesome though. In addition to that, there are many things that are unexplained in this movie (and they are necessary). And probably the most ironic thing is that these new mysteries doesn't get you anticipating for the next movie.

Some robot additions felt forced, as if they do it just to fit the head count (especially Arcie, with a total screen time of less than 5 minutes, and had no impact on the story whatsoever). Very few additions felt distinct from one another.

There are also scenes that don't make sense. For instance, there's a scene where the soldiers (trained specifically to fight against the decepticons) had to fight the decepticons. But even knowing that normal 5.56 rifle rounds won't do any harm to them, they still decided to do so. Shouldn't they have learned that only incendiary rounds can actually post a threat?

The acting is slightly better this time, and the overall tone is less serious, but it's OK to me (with more comedic moments). However, the movie is still too long, and there are obviously scenes that could be cut out of the movie. Don't worry though, it still isn't half as bad as Watchmen.

You should also be aware of the fact that the movie had more robot gunfights than car chases. You'll spend 60% of the time on watching robots fighting with cannons. It isn't something I embrace though, as you can watch better gunfights in WW2 movies.

Overall speaking, it's a nice movie, but nothing close to awesome, nothing close to great. But it's okay and acceptable. Just don't expect much out of it.

An hour-and-half of CSI
29 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
X-Files had always been a great TV series, best known for its conspiracy-filled storyline and its complicated nature. The TV series has always been a hit and considered as a classic among many.

The movie, however, failed to live up to our expectations.

I'm no X-Files fan, and to be honest, I hardly ever watched any X-Files episode in my life. I watched this movie because I think, after all, this is an X-Files movie, so it shouldn't flop as badly as "Catwoman".

To my surprise, the movie was just a big disappointment.

I understand how the writers and the producers want to make this movie a standalone movie so fans or non-fans won't have to watch all the seasons in order to understand what the movie's about. So for me, the standalone movie thing wasn't really an issue for me.

But everything that made the TV series (and the first movie) great were missing in this film. Where are the conspiracies? Where are the aliens? *VERY MINOR SPOILERS*Why is this movie about some mad people performing mad experiments? Why is this movie basically somewhat a simple investigation on some missing people (with one psychic, a couple of evidences)?*SPOILERS ENDS HERE* Why aren't there any big plot twist? Without any of these, this movie just became another episode of CSI.

I believe the movie is trying to focus on the relationship between Dana and Fox, which turned out to be a bad decision. It's simply because this is X-Files, not some corny thrillers (corny thriller focus on the male-female relationship).

And of course, there's still something good about the movie. The movie was thrilling enough (*MINOR SPOILERS*Appearances of body parts that came with great sound effects*SPOILERS END HERE*). The acting wasn't impressive but far from bad. Music is no where close to the Dark Knight's but still isn't just those ordinary ones you hear from every movie (Good job, Mark).

To sum up everything: If you're a fan, don't have high expectations because it will definitely disappoint you. If you're not a fan and trying to kill some time, this movie won't be a bad idea. The story needs major improvements (hope to see a better story in 2012).

|Storyline: 5.5| |Sound effects: 7| |Soundtrack: 7.6| |Acting: 7| |Style: 6.2| |Tilt (ie the score I think it deserves): a solid 6.5, but no where near 7|

My view on the movie, in one line: This is a slightly creepier episode of CSI with someone who has psychic abilities instead of witnesses.

actioned packed movie with a weak storyline
28 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
"Sequels to movies suck." This may apply on many sequels of different kinds of movies, but no, not this one. This movie is action-packed and funny. However, the storyline is too weak

{SPOILERS}This movie is mainly about John McClaine and a hacker trying to stop a bunch of hackers from devastating the US. How? By hacking into computers that control the power supply, traffic, security...... And the movie ends as usual {SPOILERS END HERE}

Even I can write something like this... The movie is too predictable and that makes the movie less worthy to watch. Mostly, if the storyline didn't work out, the movie will suck. But no, not this one.

First off, when you watch this movie, you have to watch the stunts. You get to watch explosions after explosions, killings using the environment advantage, the cool shootout in the beginning of this movie, car stunts and many others. For example, the scene where John knocking down a helicopter in mid-air using a cop car.

Not only the stunts, the quotes are also worthwhile to look out for. As usual, John's quotes are sarcastic. And believe it or not, it's more like an action comedy rather than a action thriller.

In conclusion, this movie is definitely a great movie to watch. And if you haven't seen Fantastic 4 : The Rising of The Silver Surfer yet, please don't watch it. Instead you should watch this action-packed comedy.

Storyline: 6/10 Acting: 8/10 Design: 9/10 Overall: 8/10

You call that a movie?
20 September 2006
This is just dumb. If Jessica Alba and Li'l Romeo (and other guests) didn't star in this thing, I would have never watched it. I mean I don't really hate her, in fact I'm 1 of her fans but this movie is just a movie that suck.

Why is this dumb? SImple. It's because the storyline is so gay that I can't even dare to think about it again. The script is written by a bunch of people who wants to make this film a li'l bit more 'hip-hop' looking (actually not). This thing actually make me laugh! I wonder how can somebody write things like that. Yea, I do! But I will never write these things for a movie. However, the OST is really remarkable. It includes Nate Dogg, Jadakiss, Sheek and rappers like that. This point gains 2 marks for this fruity movie.

OK. We have 2 points, but how about the lst point? The dance moves. The dance moves are simply the coolest dance moves ever. They're way coooooooooooooooooooler than those in that movie with Omarion in it (the one about a dance crew called li'l saints). They are also hot too.

But it still sucks.

Into the Blue (2005)

Poor storyline
2 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie basically has a great cast. The filming technique is great. However, the storyline is really really bad.

As mentioned in some other posts from some other viewers, we expect only Jessica Alba wearing that Bikiniand have some sex with Paul Walker, do a little bit diving and thats all. Right, that's all!!

Maybe some of you may disagree with me, but seriously, read about what's it's all about first.

Spoiler starts from here.

OK. There's was a man called Jared (Paul Walker) and a woman called Sam (Jessica Alba). They love each other very very much. One day, someone who is called Bryce (Scott Cann), who's a friend of Jared. He used to be rich before he loses a case. Jared doesn't know about this until later in the movie. Anyway, Bryce had a girlfriend, who he treats her like another girl. Her name is Amanda (Ashley Scott).

That Bryce guy still have the properties (inc. a boat or something). They took that boat out to the ocean and did some diving. Later on, one of them found out a shipwreck-it the wreckage of Zephyr. Next to it is a plane filled with expensive cocaine. Bryce wants the cocaine and had an argue with Jared. Later on, Bryce and Amanda get to the place where the plane wreckage was and took some of them. They tried to sell some of it to a drug lord. Actually, the cocaine belongs to the drug lord. The drug lord is not happy and made Bryce and friends get back all of the cocaine. They managed to get all of the treasure but only a small amount of cocaine using a boat filled with equipments they need, with a certain amount of money ranged from $10,000 to $30,000.

Later on the cocaine was gone, half of Amanda's body was eaten up by those sharks. She died. By this time, Bryce told Jared about his financial problems and things like that. Jared is angry. Anyway, they tried to do a deal with the drug lord by giving him the leftovers of the Zephyr. Th drug lord however was killed by his partner, who was actually mentioned early in the movie. Jared's friend, the chief of police, who Sam asked for help from, is also a bad guy working for the drug lord. He died too, killed by the drug lord's partner (predictable, eh?).

In the end, the partner died, his men died. The folks kept all the treasure AND the boat, destroyed all cocaines. happy ending (predictable too!).

That's why I hate this. This is just too predictable. I'm not saying happy ending are always bad, this movie's, ending in fact, is not that bad. But the story's is just, over predictable.
