Pros and Cons of Being Single (2023)
The message to save the earth well blended into a comedy
This movie is relevant to the present times and it conveys a very urgent message to mankind to not destroy the environment for his selfish needs.
The movie is set in India in Bangalore. The director Anurag Shetty has skillfully woven a sci-fi element into the fabric of the story.
The principal protagonist Prem is on the lookout for a date. He lives in a mansion with an invincible gate the news of which is aired on television. The earthquake and flash floods in the city of Bangalore draws all and sundry to his house for shelter foolproof that his bungalow is.
Prem wants to turn the situation to his advantage. Being single and socially awkward he is optimistic that the girl of his dreams will appear at his doorstep seeking refuge .
The different characters that show up at his house is a metaphor of life in this world which is a mix of disparate men and women.
The idea of Prem writing a journal setting out the pros and cons of being single is a novel concept. The hero pours out his hopes and fears onto the pages .
Anurag Shetty as Prem is convincing. Archana Nair as Ananya has done justice to her role. Isaac D'Souza as Jimmy is funny. A few dialogues of Yogesh and Pankaj could have been edited. Though Samanvita Shetty as Shruthi had a small role she did prove herself a seasoned actress.
The movie is hilarious in certain parts. The scenes of the stormy rainy weather outside have been beautifully caught on camera. The music is apt.
The star feature of the movie is the vocals rendered by Rakshitha Venkatesh as Payal. Both the lyrics and the singing are sensational.
Youngsters will throng to the theatres to see this movie. Sit back with a bucket of popcorn and one hour and more will simply zip by.
The Blackout (2016)
Drug warlord versus an innocent civilian.
Another short film dealing with the theme of drug mafia. The hapless hero is caught up in the murky world of the drug warlord and he is arm twisted into being his accomplice. Undeterred our hero manages to wriggle out of the unwelcome circumstances by seeking the help of the police.
Anurag Shetty has done justice to the role of the gullible youngster. Nitin as the villain is convincing. Jayachandra as the tough cop is good.
Overall an entertaining short film. Camera work needs improvement. Background score is well woven into the film. The minor characters were a tad amateurish but for our hero's sister.
Anurag Shetty as the maker of the film has a bright future in the domain of penning scripts and acting.
Looking for more upbeat movies from the director.
The Stalker (2016)
Great as a debut film
This short film opens with the main protagonist texting her boyfriend for whom she is waiting.
She sees a guy with a hoodie standing at a short distance from her and looking in her direction.
The female lead's role essayed by Samanvita Shetty does complete justice to the writer's perspective of her. She has brilliantly portrayed fear, anxiety, impatience and dread so much so that she carries the film on her shoulders.
The writer/director who plays the hoodman in this, does instill fear in the viewer.
The movie is fast paced and the suspense builds up as it progresses.
To make a suspense thriller within a short time span of about 8 minutes is no mean feat.
The background score enhances the suspense element in the film.
Kabeer and the waitresses were not bad in their respective roles.
Anurag Shetty seems like a promising film maker.
Mix-ups (2019)
Keeps you guessing
The director of this film Anurag Shetty seems to be one among the crop of upcoming movie makers which Bangalore seems to be producing of late. This is his third film as an amateur director although I can say with conviction that Mix-ups has a definite story line with an unanticipated cliffhanger. This practice of having an open ending is common practice among Hollywood directors. It leaves much to the viewer's imagination. Kudos to this young director for that.
The role of Samantha essayed by Samanvita Shetty and Rajendra enacted by Anurag Shetty himself have clearly stolen the show. It is a matter of pride that Bangalore boasts of such young talent. The actor who plays Rahul falls short of our expectations.
The background music by S.Saravanan deserves special mention. The music adds meaning to the scene in question which is indeed commendable.
Cinematography is good enough. The lighting in certain sequences is really good.
The concept of Mix-ups is something fresh and unseen in cinema history.
Dialogues overlap for a couple of minutes which is a loophole in the dubbing.
The opening scene sets the tone for the film.
Anurag Shetty needs to explore new genres for his future projects.
Dialogues are well written. Looking forward to more from this promising youngster.
