The Regime (2024)
Don't waste your time
By attempting to merge elements from "The Death of Stalin," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and "Borat" into a single narrative, the show becomes a bewildering concoction rather than a cohesive piece. The 'satire' - if it can be called that - stumbles significantly, as it appears unanchored from any semblance of reality. Instead, it leans heavily on bizarrely synthesized stereotypes of Eastern Europe in the American imagination.
The characters are shallow caricatures, lacking depth and authenticity, which further distances the narrative from delivering any meaningful or resonant messages. The show oscillates between trying to be a biting political satire (of what, though?) and a slapstick comedy, never fully committing to either.
The production values and the performances by the cast are commendable for the most part, yet they are not nearly enough to salvage the show from its fundamental flaws.
Tenet (2020)
This movie is a huge MESS. Still can't believe I'm giving 5 stars to a Nolan movie
There's no backstory. None. You get thrown through all those action scenes patched together with lousy dialogues. You feel like you've skipped 5 previous episodes in a TV series and now you're watching something that makes no sense to you. Except that you haven't missed anything - it's just really, and I mean REALLY, bad writing coupled with even worse directing.
In the beginning you hope there will be some kind of clever and unexpected resolution of at some point the movie. Unfortunately, this hope never materializes - it's impossible to understand and follow what's actually happening on the screen.
And then there are the movie characters. While I can applaud the actors' performance for the most part, the characters themselves are unbelievable and terribly underdeveloped. Dialogues, that for the most part are intended to aid the viewer grasp the movie's premise, don't help. They are so laughably unrealistic ("I'm a tiger!"), and so dry, that it seems they were written by a 13 year old.
The only thing I'm happy about is that Hans Zimmer was spared of taking part in this major farce.
The Witcher (2019)
High production value won't fix poor writing
I've read books, I'm a fan of video games (especially the 3rd part). So, after binge-watching the entire season 1, I'm really sad to admit that the Witcher TV series is a major disappointment. The root cause of most problems with the series is, without a doubt, bad writing. It is because of poor writing that fantasy series with a great storyline, huge fanbase and developed universe still feels like a B- grade TV production. No matter how much money Netflix has poured into the Witcher series, the lack of character building, the plot-jumping, the laughably unrealistic dialogues - all of it makes it nearly impossible to enjoy the show.
