Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Tough to Watch, That's the Point
The movie was an artistic masterpiece - acting, cinematography, sound, costume, and of course incredible story design. You are made to feel what the Osage people feel growing fear and paranoia with eventual hope when the FBI come. It is a powerful portrayal of a really horrible story that shows symptoms of racism and apathy that we are used to see perpetrated on people in poverty but are shocked to see this done to people with means and wealth.
The times, just after WW1, were barely 100 years ago but feel like a completely different time with how people decided to marry, socialize, provide rule of law, and more leaving an interesting pull people pure humanism and feelings that these are very different people.
My Policeman (2022)
Sad, beautiful, and a touch erotic
It is a rare movie that moves me to tears - perhaps the last movie I can even remember with that effect was watching the notebook years ago. My Policeman is like a gay tragic version and I'm here for it.
Artistically depicted, I felt a deeper level of understanding of the issue at this time period that I didn't even know I lacked. The system was the villain and everyone a victim that shows that draconian laws, like we're on display in this society, hurt everyone.
Also, Harry Styles really impresses - I've never thought of him as an actor and I was deeply impressed at his range - goofy, fun, naive, sneaky, brooding, and sad. He wasn't just hot, he was good!
Halloween (1978)
Fun to See Orgin of Horror Tropes
It didn't scare me like it might have people back in the day because it feels too slow and predictable by today's standards, but, I think that is testament of its effectiveness.
The movie throughout knew it's style and stuck to it - the characters didn't experience much development but that is not necessarily what we were looking for when watching.
It falls short of suspense but is a precursor to many suspense themes - seeing something no one else sees, people not believing the person to their own peril, the steady closing in of the murderer, isolation of the victim, and the hunt around the house. Solid formula, it's just been done plenty since.
Blade Runner (1982)
Have a Seat You Can Grip!
Get ready for a ride! The force of the cinematography is one to behold with dialogue and acting at a level even beyond. This movie is a classic for a reason - it draws you in and projects meaning in layers that I will be thinking about for days. Perhaps the only thing that took me out was reconciling it takes place in a futuristic Los Angeles but rains all the time and otherwise doesn't even look similar; I'm happy to take it as a completely alternate world though in which LA maybe isn't even on the same continent.
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Cinematic Master Piece of Horror
The journey of a marine through the Vietnam War, and their eventual transformation, is believable and terrifying. To imagine 18 year old boys, fresh out of high school, sent 8,000 miles away to kill other 18 year old boys is disturbing and shocking.
Billy Madison (1995)
Master Class of Comedy
There is a reason this is a classic - peak Adam Sandler that perfectly satirizes and encapsulates the feeling of each grade from how an adult would see it in a way that makes me split my sides from laughing in a way that is only possible by being able to relate to the subject material. The creators did their homework!
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
Impressive for its day
But I'm a Cheerleader beautifully approached the topic of conversion therapy in a humorous and satirical fashion that accomplished the difficult feat of educating about a serious topic without losing entertainment value.
All that being said, if it was made today, I would expect it to go further, be funnier, and push boundaries even more.
Elvis (2022)
Now I get it!
Why is there a Hawaii Elvis? Christmas Elvis? Fat Elvis? Memorabilia? Vegas residency? I had a lot of gaps filled in my cultural knowledge in a riveting and emotionally rich story context.
The 10 Year Plan (2014)
Enjoyable & Simple Gay Rom-Com
I found the predictability of the plot enjoyable and the actors fun to watch.
Of particular note, the protagonist's portrayal as an obsessive compulsive romantic felt authentic (even though hyperbolicly acted) as a type of person seeking love something I could connect with. The movie didn't try to change that part of the main character even while it showed pit falls that the anxious style of attachment commonly develops.
The main characters being super cute helps a lot for the enjoyment of this movie and all in all, I found it to be a completely enjoyable "alone on a Friday night with a bottle of red wine" sort of movie.
