Old (2021)
It's bad, really poor....and that's what kept me hooked
Well, I've cleared up one curiosity I had about the film industry. Do actors get to see clips of the films they are starring in and check to see if their performance isn't damaging their reputation before they get released? Clearly no, because which one of the experienced actors, at least, would want to be forever linked to this film? In the first 10 minutes, you think it needs just a little more time to reveal itself, but no, it doesn't improve. I ended up watching to see just how bad it could get just for kicks.
On a positive note, the central raison d'être for this film does reveal itself, in the end, and makes for an interesting reflection. Loved the closing song too.
Sherpa (2015)
An incredible story, able to contrast perceptions of what a "problem" actually is.
On the one hand, we have the overprivileged, looking to comfortably conquer Everest and willing to pay vast sums of money to goodness knows who, we learn of the devastation of their not being able to complete their climb and how, as such, a disaster is an inconvenience. On the other hand we have the local Sherpas looking to negotiate fairer conditions of work for their community, after decades of struggle and loss of life.
The comments made about the "mob" of Sherpas and how they might be dealt with through their "owners" showed such a old-fashioned spirit of command that we are left wishing these climbers had continued their journey, on their own, each carrying their necessities for themselves.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Thoughtful sci-fi
I enjoyed this rather unusual series. It's science-fiction seen through a philosophical lens. If you don't mind putting some thought into your viewing experience and are happy with a softer than average approach to violence on screen (which, in itself, makes it unusual) then this is a good viewing experience.
