Fairly Legal (2011)
OK show, but the main character can be annoying which lets the show down.
I liked Fairly Legal at the beginning, but after a few episodes, Sarah's character started to annoy me. She is bossy, slightly rude, thinks she's seen it all, knows it all and has an answer to everything, and patronising at times also. "I can solve everything and listen to me, shut up, do this, don't do that, etc" and her own life is a mess with conflicts with everyone in her life... Also, I find some plots uninteresting and the humour at times really falls flat. The idea of the show is quite good, and it started well but went downhill I think, mainly because her character is not likable enough and plots are not very well thought or covered. Shame.
The Millionaire Matchmaker (2008)
Sometimes sick, sometimes genuine
I agree with all 9 reviews actually, I fully understand why some people will view this as "disgusting". But also, there are some genuine stories and I like that Patti tells off the millionaires. 90% of them on the show are full of themselves, narrow-minded, with a rude attitude towards women, and so sure they are great (but they are not!), oh, and often not good looking. Some of them are so awful I would not date them even if I was paid for it! Some references: about the episode when the 2 millionaires choose each other: I saw it twice, and although I liked it the first time, then when I looked at it again, I didn't like the guy. I realised that his goal for being on the show was to advertise his hotel, and probably if he could meet someone nice in the process it was a bonus. In the episode where the guy from Eastern Europe, who brought like 8 family members on the first date, HE was looking for a sh*g, not a wife! This was obvious and it made him despicable from the moment he appeared on the screen. In that same episode, that rich and shy Jewish guy was a gentleman and his date went well, a meal and some salsa dancing. I wouldn't be surprised if he respected the rule of 90 days w/o s*x. About Dave the s*x toy guy, he was out of order a few times, but in the episode when he treats his date to a massage by the pool then a gondola ride, he acted very decently, whereas the girl (Asian) acted like a wh*re the whole time, trying to get laid and nothing else. The two 30-something (Club owner from Chicago and IT guy from Florida) were pure losers. You have 24hr to get to know your date and show her your life and you pee in front of her because you can't be bothered to walk to the toilet!??! "Hi, my name is David Golshan, I have a butler, I wear a scarf in my home while smoking my pipe, I am the kind of man that men want to be and that women want to be with" - give me a bucket! Anyhow, this show is somewhat entertaining and it does one good thing for us normal people: it makes us like other normal people/normal guys! At the end of the day, whether you agree with what Patti does or not, there is one truth: she saw a gap in the market, she filled it, and she makes good money out of it, with the satisfaction of actually matchmaking successfully some people. Job well done.
A Bear Named Winnie (2004)
Winnie the sweetie
It all starts in a world war environment, guys ready to serve their country, kill and be killed. Then as he is taking a walk in the local town, this soldier comes across a bear killer's shop, with bear skins everywhere. Then that little cub makes herself heard, and the soldier can't bear (haha!) the idea of the little one being skinned so buys it and tells his soldier unit this should be their mascot, their buddy, the little thing that could guide them and give them some warmth in the eve of a potential big fight. All fall in love with the cub, now named Winnie, and as weeks go by, all protect her and look after her. The key-soldier and his new best friend share a tent with Winnie at night. She is so cute and full of surprises, everybody falls in love with her. Difficult times and events follow, both for the army guys and Winnie, and then her destiny wraps up, as well as theirs. Not a blockbuster, but a very nice movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon, and one that makes you think again, in a nice way, about how animals can affect our lives. I recommend this film, if you are emotional, get some tissue. :-)
Nankyoku monogatari (1983)
Great
There are few movies that really strike you. This is one of them. If you have a heart, then there's no way you can avoid feeling, crying and loving this movie. This year Walt Disney released a new version of it, Eight Below, which I will see this week - and obviously, i will compare!!! But out of all the movies I saw in my childhood, this one is in the top-10... it grabs you and stays in your mind for ever! I don't know yet about the American version, but this Japanese original was so so so good! As you follow the tough life of this bunch of lovely dogs, you experience fear, happiness, sadness, love... the whole thing. As they fight for life in this harsh environment, you also get to appreciate the scenery. They are not all making it though, and you cry and cry and cry... You want to help so much, it brings out all the best in you... A MUST SEE! I am upset there's never been any video/DVD release of that movie, it's a masterpiece! All movies involving cute animals are winners, but this one is really striking and you will never forget it. In a different context, other great and moving movies include L'Ours (France) i.e. The Bear, and Deux Frères (France) i.e. Two Brothers. The later made me cry even more than Antarctica. These two movies really hurt, it's unfair what's happening and you get really sad. But it's so beautiful as well. I hope that Eight Below won't be a crap too-americanised remake. I wish Antarctica was just available, it's not at all and it's a shame that the World can't see it.
L'ours (1988)
cute...
I am French and was only 13 when I saw that French movie at the cinema. I loved it, the cute cub is really funny and you love him straight away! I felt strongly for these animals and how nasty men can be... The only time I felt that feeling was with another of JJA's masterpiece, Two Brothers... (along with an old movie called Antarctica) . This one was far more painful though. The injustice really made me cry all movie long, I even considered not watching it until the end as I found it too painful. Antarctica, that I saw when I was 10, was as painful as Two Brothers... Antarctica is a wonderful movie, and has just been re-released under the name Eigth Below. The original was made by Japanese but I guess Americans just like to re-do movies and make money so, there it is... Although you want to laugh and then cry in L'Ours, the overall emotion is more bearable (ah ah!) and the film is very beautiful! The scenery in that movie is spectacular. You really leave the cinema thinking a lot and this is a movie you won't forget. Enjoy!
Eight Below (2006)
so-so remake...
When Eight Below was advertised here in the UK, I couldn't believe it! I told my partner: I bet you this is the remake of that movie I told you about many times and that I had loved as a kid! And thanks to the IMDb website, I managed to trace it: Antarctica, made in Japan in 1983. This is done by the same team from Japan... I have been trying to buy that movie for years to be able to see it again because I loved it so much. You can't find it anywhere and it's a shame. I am going to see Eight Below tomorrow night and I hope it will be as good as the original! I will make sure that I have plenty of tissues with me as crying will surely be part of the experience. The emotions will be high and scenery should be amazing. I think it's a movie everybody should see, it's full of good moral and humanity. Once you have experienced that story, you remain changed, and it will always stay in you. Result: Well, I've seen the movie now, and it is far away from the original, and I was disappointed. The original shows you so much more of all aspects of Antarctica (scenery, animals such as live orcas, bear, seals, etc) and less human non-sense... The music was so-so too, the amazing Vangelis music of Antarctica, the original, was so much better... Well, I won't be seeing it again, but if Antarctica could be one day available on DVD, bring it on!!! If you pay attention, you'll spoil quite a few mistakes along the way too...
