State Fair (1962)
blah.
the 1945 is MUCH better.
aside from the complete abomination of the plot line between wayne and emily, in this adaptation, jerry (aka "pat" in the '45) is made out to be a complete slimeball, with NO endearing qualities whatsoever.
much of the "love" in this version seems to be weak and unjustified...as if it were an afterthought of the people who were "updating" the script........ writer: 'oh yeah, they fall in love at the end.....hmm....well, i don't want to rewrite the whole thing, so.....*scribbles in disjointed love ending that doesn't seem to fit with the progression of the relationship*'
also, tom ewell is the most unconvincing pig farmer I've ever seen.
BLAH. its bad. watch the '45.
Tumbleweeds (1999)
yuck
this movie is, despite its "independent" status, a stupid hollywood version of a nauseating mother-daughter relationship. it wasnt that bad at first, but somewhere during the course of the movie--around the time that the daughter goes out with that guy, i think--it turns into a cheesey mother-daughter bonding movie. im sorry, but i dont know of any mothers who have that kind of relationship with their daughter...its probably better that way, though.
Iron Will (1994)
a not-so-good movie that i reaaally like
as far as great films go, this is not one of them. will's actions are predictable, the ending is predictable, the whole movie is a cliche in and of itsself. its just another "underdog saves the day, beats the evil bad guy, wins the race, is loved by all" kind of movie. but, despite all that. i still like it. its just cute. it makes you feel good, doesnt make your brain hurt, and is easy to watch when you have nothing else to do. hoooray for this movie. its not great, but its not so poor that its unbearable.
A Simple Plan (1998)
eh. it was ok, i guess
I watched this in my English class last week. I have to write a paper pointing out the similarities this movie has with "The Pardoner's Tale," one of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. I'm not sure how i feel about this movie, it wasnt great, but it wasnt horrible. It was kind of unrealistic, kind of showy...but i guess thats Hollywood.
