Smiley Face Killers (2020)
Total garabage movie.
I just got done writing a review for 2019's Random Acts of Violence. A truly terrible movie. Wondering what other movies where worse than it. Oh, boy. Sadly there were quite a few. Oh, and this one? It was at the top of my list. The only one that can probably beat it is this terrible horror Christmas movie about abortion. Can't remember the name and hopefully the movie falls out of my head along with the title.
The story, writing, and actors were bottom of the fish barrel. Not to mention that the writing is so bad I couldn't even be angry at the victim's stupidity!!
Garbage. I swear to the fluffy bunnies if I hear about how bad WW84 was I'm gonna go crazy. This is what bad film is.
Bloody Hell (2020)
Cult Classic in the Making.
This movie is perfection in Dark Humor. The kind that fans will slowly flock to and discover. This is one of the hidden gems of 2020, in a sea of bad 2020 releases.
The story is insane, the plot is insane, and it's all very insanely entertaining!
It is so hard to get dark humor, especially done right, and honestly this movie shouldn't have worked. But the writing was just . . . Crazy good. Emphasis on the crazy.
Most of the credit has to got to the lead actor. I don't think anyone else could have pulled it off! The other actors clearly played well off of him and gave out great performances.
Oh, and that ending!
Don't miss out on what is gonna be Cult Classic. The perfect amount of dark humor, gore, and wacky!
Random Acts of Violence (2019)
Absolute Trash.
Normally I like to be detailed and give solid reasons why I don't like a movie. Get into it and be fair.
All I can say is that with crap movies like this I can't believe the male lead would leave Grey's Anatomy. I hate it when people say solid B movies were "the worst movie of the year" or some other crap. This. This movie is hands down the worse one of 2019 . . . It was terrible. Sadly I've seen too many terrible movies to say it's the worse one of the decade, but boy does it come awfully close.
The script is so terrible . . . That competent actors in the case of the male and female leads can't even attempt to act.
Downrange (2017)
Some of the most frustratingly stupid characters.
This is low budget. So I wasn't expecting too much out of the acting. No loss there. The camera work was better than I thought, not awful. The music unmemorable except for some really poor choices. Which is a shame. The terror of someone shooting at you in the middle of nowhere is powerful fear.
Which was an echo of the constant poor choices of bad writing. Consistently terrible writing. Like how characters died. Or how the gun used blew this huge gaping hole in one character's head, then cleanly shot through another's eye with no exit wound. The stupidity of the characters baffles me and the sheer ridiculousness of it was exhausting. I hate bad writing. I hate stupid characters. The "shocking end" was so heavily leaned into that the instant the scene started I knew what was gonna happen and was beyond annoyed when it did.
The writers vaguely tried to make an attempt at hinting that the shooter picking off these totally random people had motivation. But I almost wish they hadn't even tried. *sighs* This isn't a mindless good time. It's simply mindless and a waste of money and time. I'm one of those picky viewers who just can't abide a movie that tries to make every character stupid for the sake of the person killing them. This one was even more frustrating than the trope of being trapped in a room that has a window you could break out of.
Juda (2017)
Actually pretty good.
This popped up on Hulu while I was browsing foreign TV shows. I've been a long time Asian Drama fan, and had recently tried a few other shows from other countries and I decided to check out other countries. First off I am a huge sucker for vampire anything (*winks*) and the idea of watching one from Israel just seemed kind of awesome. I immiedately jumped right on it. To be bored for a while until our male lead meets our lady vampire. Which was one of the best scenes of the whole show. So good that it carried me through all the way to the end.
Which seemed to be the magic of this show. I speed watched a few parts, but there were always these great character scenes and moments that kept me going. It was this perfect blend of unique and fantastical new ideas for vampires. Then a wonderful Bromance that I just couldn't get enough of! Not to mention the entire cast was so well done.
I will say this is selling itself as a romance, but it is not. Not really. Besides that first episode I do not think there was much romance. Until the end where there's confessions of love and that just-ugh. The male lead had more time and connection with his Ex. Heck the lady vampire and the Ex had more development and connection than the intended romance. (Not kidding.) I was a bit annoyed by the very typical role of the only two female characters, who did not feel like leads. Not to mention the blood source most of the other females where. So, boo.
That said I enjoyed the plot so much. Sometimes the pacing got a bit off, but I give Juda tons of props for the surprise twists. Because shows barely surprise me anymore. Not to mention the fun connections of the characters.
I'm actually very much interested in a season 2 and hope there will be one in the future! I loved the unique mythology on vampires, it's always fun to discover the ideas never end. The characters are so much fun and wonderful together that I can't wait to see them grow together. Not to mention this ends on a pretty big twist and cliffhanger!!
The Gentlemen (2019)
Finally another solid Guy Ritchie film I can enjoy!
The last Guy Ritchie film I enjoyed was The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. ( One of his most underrated movies if you ask me. And please don't bring up Aladdin that just had Guy Ritchie flavor, but was very much Disney's movie.) I actually didn't realize that The Gentlemen was a Guy Ritchie film until the opening credits and the movie started rolling. Because once the movie starts you know it's a Guy Ritchie movie. No doubts.
At first I was a bit put off. Jumpy, jarring, and then click. The story gets it's footing.
The main reason I picked up The Gentlemen was the cast. With some of my all time favorite actors and (sadly) only one favorite actress. (It's very female lacking overall.) Everyone was amazing and I kept thinking "Oh, well *insert name* just stole the show! Oh, wait now they stole the show!" I came for Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, and Charlie Hunnam. And wow, were they amazing!! Especially since the entire cast was, well, amazing! I did not know that the fabulous Michelle Dockery would be in this and she killed it! I feel ashamed of all the movies I've seen her in that just WASTED her skills. I want her to be in more fierce roles like this! Michelle Dockery is a true talent and I hate to see her skilled wasted. I wanted more of her character and loved every moment she was on screen!
Once the movie gets going and the viewer "clicks" with it, the story is rather brilliant. I love all the tie ins from start to finish and the pay offs. Not to mention the themes. I don't want to give anything away. There's plenty of mystery, suspense, and dark humor that I just love!! Shocking deaths and viewers can definitely feel like every character's life is on the line.
One of my favorite movies from 2019 and I wish there was more buzz around it! Not to mention for Hugh, Colin, Hunnam, and Michelle Dockery. Of course the "star" Matthew McConaughey (at least the face of the movie) was stellar as usual. I also think this shows another diverse side of Henry Golding who is really curating a solid portfolio of characters and skills. The script also shows it's all about the ideas and writing behind it. Making The Gentlemen a heady rush of brilliant writing, cinematography, and acting.
Invasion Planet Earth (2019)
Garbage.
Garbage. Utter. Garbage. I don't say this lightly either. (Trust me I have watched some bad movies. Too many.) I don't care what the history is behind how long the movie took or it's budget. What matters is the story. The graphics could have been done differently, the story is so choppy and doesn't flow. Which is a shame because I think the ending "reveal" and "idea" really was interesting for a bit.
The script and dialogue is bad, the acting delivered suffers from so terrible green screen work. Which leads to the majority of the movie having no heart or soul to it. I feel that at least they could have made this movie tighter by making it more coherent. Solid writing can save a low graphics budget.
In the end: Garbage.
Hell on the Border (2019)
Fabulous idea, poorly executed.
I love a movie that tries to tell us a truth. Something that history has forgotten. Such as the "African American Cowboy", or the "black cowboy". As the beginning text noted the subject is avoided in history and it's rare in all medias of entertainment. (Though let's not forget Django Unchained.) Hell on the Border is based on a true story and a fascinating one at that.
I have to give props to all the actors involved. They did a great job. My hats off to them for desperately trying to save this movie. Bravo.
Because this is not what I would call a B-grade movie. No. No. B-grade movies are waaaaaay better. The script meanders too much and is dragged out to accommodate huge musical pieces that were clearly made for this movie. Yes, the songs were beautiful. Sadly I think more care and attention went into the songs and drawing out already boring scenes to the point of tears. ^_-
The movie could have been snipped and cut in many places and shortened. Oddly enough the editing and piecing together of fight scenes and shoot outs . . . I have no proper words. I can't imagine anyone working on this film thought "yeah, that looks good". It was so jarring that I can't believe they simply didn't hire a student of film to fix it needing credits for college. Or use basic tricks of the trade to make the action scenes flow better. Anything! It felt like someone on Youtube poking fun at independent films. It was funny to laugh at until you realized someone thought this was acceptable.
Hell on the Border tries too hard to be another western. Despite that it's trying to tell us something unique. To be unique. This sadly is not the worst western I've seen. It's a bit odd but since 2017 there's been a resurgence of crap westerns being made. Hell on the Border falls into that category despite the actors best efforts. Moments where you can tell the actors are absolutely enjoying themselves were fun! Sadly the script and crap editing of the movie kills any potential the film had.
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Not a true Mary Poppins fan and even I was left disappointed.
So I was expecting to simply be entertained and enjoy new catchy Mary Poppins songs. Wow. Just wow. It's not that the songs were bad or the singing. No. Actually the singing really is great. The melodies and lyrics left a lot to be desired. Nothing stood out. Halfway through I looked to my mom (a fan of the originals) and said, "I'm not going to remember a single song. Or even an impression." To which she gloomily agreed.
The most important thing about the Mary Poppins movies is the music. The songs. Even though I didn't watch the movies as a child the songs stuck with me. (I watched them later on in life.) Because they're every where. The fact that no one realized how important it was to have catchy songs and raised a red flag baffles me. Because great song writers are not dead. They're just not being utilized.
Disney spared no expense on the visuals and they kept the type of animation and style of the old movies. Just giving them a polished look. I applaud the movie on that front.
The story and rip off of trying to make a "let's go fly a kite" revamped was such an epic fail. Not to mention most of the characters. An odd romance that let me more creeped out then warm fuzzy feels.
With not a single catchy song in site and boring writing this movie was well boring. I doubt I will ever rewatch it and it's such a shame. The talented actors/cast and look of the show was perfect for Mary Poppins Returns to be a fantastic reboot. It's shame no one at Disney decided to ask fans and none fans what some of the important parts were.
Destroyer (2018)
Pacing issues and too convoluted.
I feel like too many movies suffer from pacing issues. Movies are longer and too convoluted. Some of my favorite movies and some of the hey-day times of movies only needed 60 minutes to make magic. Sometimes 90 minutes. My ramble here is to say that Destroyer could have been brilliant. Yes, the moving is slow and winding. It's what the writer and director wanted. There's just so much extra junk that Destroyer shoots itself in the foot. I have no doubt that 60 minutes would have told this tale much better, and it still could have been "slow" feeling. Winding. Whatever.
Honestly I feel like due to all of this Destroyer could easily be missed. However, unlike others I feel like this is Nicole Kidman's finest acting. Because she took a horrible irredeemable character and made you root for her. No really the character of Erin Bell is irredeemable. Erin Bell knows this and she embraces the awful she is whole heartedly. Kidman's skill made her likeable. Because the writing didn't really help her much, but she worked with what she had.
Sebastian Stan-one of my favorite actors-is amazing! It pains me that he doesn't have more screen time. Not to mention that Sebastian Stan and Nicole Kidman had such amazing chemistry that I need for them to be in another movie together. (A good one please.)
The cinematography is another amazing point of Destroyer that feels wasted. Though the biggest breakout role here is the makeup team and design teams. The music was forgettable, but worked well with the movie.
Overall I feel that this movie wasted not only the amazing talent's of Sebastian Stan and Nicole Kidman, but many other well deserving actors. I hate a movie that wastes actor's talents. I always feel like it's the actors/actresses that get blamed when it's the script and director that needed some clean up and guidance. Overall I don't regret watching this to see the performances, but even that couldn't make this movie good or bearable.
