Charming yet heavily damaged by the director's vanity
7 January 2024
Charming feel-good film that was heavily weighed down by the on-screen presence of director Taika Waititi's vanity cameo. His character should have been cut entirely or given to an up-and-coming kiwi actor or a local legend that would have delighted the home audience.

As it stands, there is no excuse to have this obnoxious character be the (unnecessary) narrator who blinks in and out of existence and fails to even bookend the movie properly unless you count the pointless after-credits scene that actually manages to drag the movie down somehow and undercuts the other cast members' performances and impact of the story.

Waititi's character's scenes are jarring in tone even for this lighthearted comedy and his presence obtrusive as the focus shifts entirely to him and the movie forgets to further the plot or character arcs for the entire duration he is in the scene.

It's literally impossible to make a better adaptation of the source material, no-one cares that you hate people who are not straight white men.

Episode breakdowns: 1x01: 4/5 1x02: 3/5 1x03: 3.5/5 1x04: 4/5 1x05: 4/5 1x06: 4.5/5 1x07: 3/5 1x08: 4/5 1x09: 4/5 1x10: 3/5 1x11: 4/5

Wish it had been 13 episodes per season. Looking forward to the secret bonus episode of which I definitely don't know any details about. Halloween month maybe?

ETA: Well that was way sooner than I thought!
