Hoodwinked! (2005)
Fun and kids and adults
Based on the trailers my 8 year old nephew and I went into this movie expecting a lot and weren't disappointed. The movie starts out with the traditional "Red Riding Hood" story but then it quickly develops a twist. Once the wolf is stopped from attacking "Red" the police (and a very clever frog)show up and the incident at Granny's house is seen from everyone's point of view (which are all different naturally). It turns out someone is stealing recipes forcing all the forest eateries out of business. Through the flashbacks we are shown that the wolf is actually a reporter, Red works for Granny and Granny is seriously into extreme sports. The actual culprit was a clever twist.
While Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close and David Ogden Stiers are all excellent, I thought Twitchy (Cory Edwards) and Andy Dick (as Boingo) were the best. There's is plenty of humor throughout and, although my 8 year old nephew laughed a lot more than I did, I still found the film enjoyable and worth viewing.
Hush (2005)
predictable
There isn't one surprise in this mediocre "thriller". Years after leaving his hometown (and the girlfriend on whom he performed an abortion) a doctor and his wife return. It isn't long before the old girlfriend is a part of their lives as she tries to get the doctor to leave his wife for her. The girlfriend even goes so far as to kill his mother-in-law. She also impersonates the wife at a fertility clinic and becomes pregnant with the husbands baby. The actors do the best they can, given the dearth of material. Victoria Pratt comes off the best, playing the psychotic girlfriend with a believable intensity. Tahmoh Penikett is adequate as Doctor Hamilton (although in his defense he isn't really given a lot to do). Tori Spelling is also adequate as the targeted wife (luckily for her meager acting skills she isn't given a lot to do).
An Unexpected Love (2003)
Positive review
I really enjoyed this movie; in fact I wish it was longer (or that the characters - all of them- would be brought back for a sequel). The movie isn't perfect (for example, I think the daughters and husbands issues were settled a little too easily, but I guess you have to expect that in a 2 hour movie). The best thing about this movie was the cast; terrific to a person. But for me, Wendy Crewson was exceptional. Her performance resonated with such emotional honesty I was really touched by it. I frankly think I liked the movie as much as I did because of her performance.
