Guns of Honor (1994)
Fans of J.T.Edson stay away from this stinkbomb
I am a big fan of J.T.Edson.and my favourite character is The Ysabel Kid.I was thrilled when I heard that they were making a movie based on The Ysabel Kid and that if it did well, more movies were planned. The only thing this piece of excretment has in common with the book are the character's names. My nitpicker category of sins. Mark is supposed to be a blond;a big beautiful built like a brick outhouse 18-22 year old blond.......s-i-g-h- Belle was*not* left in a ditch and was a major character in a number of the books that took place much later than this gobbler. She was never Mark's girlfriend(to put the term politely) The Ysabel Kid looked like a 16 year old kid,NOT a grown man.He was *not* known as The Ysabel Man but the Ysabel Kid,and all three characters were a lot younger than the actors cast to play them in the ...(and I use the term loosely) movie If Dusty had ever tried to slap Lon(and lived to tell the tale)the Kid would have been gone so fast,it would have made Dusty's head swim, and he'd have never come back. Dusty once made the comment "that the only person that had ever scared him" was The Kid.
Dusty,The Kid,and Mark were closer than brothers.Dusty never would have treated his friends like the movie Dusty did. J.T.Edson might have been British but he did his research *AND WAS CORRECT* on the things that counted and that included the "Texas" sense of humour, dialogue, and day to day ranch work. He was also correct on the handling of firearms.Your fast draw experts can draw and shoot in 1/4 to 1/5 of a second.)Think of the Trinity face slapping scene in Trinity Is My Name.(G) BETTER YET RENT THE TRINITY MOVIES INSTEAD OF THESE LOSERS.THEY ARE MUCH MORE FUN The movie dialogue sounded like it was written by a parody of what a Russian might "think" we sound like in Texas, including the mistakes in English grammar commonly made by non speaking natives of other countries. The acting was not all that great, but I do believe it was more due to having no concept of what was going on in the first place than their ability as actors. If the actors *were* fans of J.T,no wonder they were confused and baffled as to what was going on. Forget the movie and read the books.
A History of Violence (2005)
This is not a movie for kids
The movie has been over for two hours and I'm still shaking.I want to know why Viggo Mortensen was not nominated for an academy award for the performance? Mr Mortensen, you are known for being a pacifist, where on earth did you learn to move and react like that? This is not a pretty movie. It is gritty, graphic, violent and ugly. It is the story of a man who has changed, and put a life of crime and being the meanest S.O.B. in the crop of S.O.B's behind him.The character's evolved into a loving, gentle, caring family man living a quiet life in small town America. He is respected and liked by the whole town. The small restaurant where he works is robbed by two hoods that have no respect for life and like robbing Bruce Banner, they get much much more than they bargained
for.AGAIN,I warn you,the violence is graphic.Tom Stall does not pussyfoot around. The story attracts the media, his picture is posted and the rats from his past crawl out of the woodwork. The rest is......H-I-S-T-O-R-Y. The movie may not be your cup of tea but it will make for very interesting conversation. On a personal note, maybe it's because I'm such a big fan of Viggos, but at one point, the wife asks Tom;"Who are you, have I been living a lie?" This is the man that has lived with her for the last twenty years, loved her, gave her their children, and he's fighting a bunch of men that are set on killing him and likely the whole family. He is in a desperate situation, needing her the most and she asks a stupid question like that. The question bought out the violence in me.I felt like slapping her.
Ghost Rock (2003)
Could end up a cult movie
I don't know exactly why I like this movie.Maybe I have a soft spot for shoestring Indies. The dialog is hokey, but the idea is a good one. There's plenty of action and enough gunfighting to take you back to the old westerns where each gun held a box full of lead.I really enjoyed the martial arts.....yes you saw right, martial arts. The stunt work is well choreographed and the boys earn their pay. The eye candy is there...for both sexes. The movie trys,it really does. It's a brave effort, and I'm a sucker for ghost stories. It's not War and Peace, but a good way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy night.Grab some chips and dips and Enjoy!
Young Black Stallion (2003)
Nice Horse
The horses are beautiful, and the little girl is quite pretty.Young kids will like the movie.I might add if you like horses maybe you can overlook the the absurd things that happen.Even if I suspend my belief about her finding the way home through the desert, or that a wild colt will let you walk right up to it,it's too much to ask that after "running wild" for a year, you can walk right up and climb on.I was with my wild filly a lot longer than she was.I climbed on and Zephyr threw me half way over a 6'fence.Folks enjoy the movie but PLEASE explain to your kid that getting on a wild untamed horse is NOT a good idea.
