I went into Eternals with slightly lower expectations after seeing the negative reaction from critics - after seeing it I really don't understand the hate. The cinematography is fantastic, I loved the story, and it sets up a huge future for the MCU. Definitely better to have sporadic comedy rather than zany one-liners every 2 minutes. And THAT shot of Arishem the Judge towards the end...excellent!

Quite often you watch a performance, and love it, but you're still always very aware you're watching that actor perform. Phillip Seymour Hoffman here gives one of those rare performances where you don't even recognize the actor as they become so engrossing as the character. Phoenix is also brilliant, hard to think this role wasn't heavily discussed by the casting team on Joker.

I loved the Man from Earth so much that the sequel was always going to have an uphill task in living up to expectations. It has some flaws and the story was orientated around John himself less than I'd have liked - however, I really think a lot of the criticism is harsh. I can appreciate that they couldn't just do another all-in-one-setting rerun of the original, and wanted to take it in another direction. The motivations and actions of the students were poorly written but the central premise of the story is still so captivating that I think, contrary to some comments here, that fans of the first film will enjoy and should watch Holocene.
