The Factory (2012)
Tough Critics
I am not a movie critic, just a regular person who likes crime thrillers and for people like me, who like this genre, this movie comes through. I will say that the plot is familiar but I didn't mind because it kept me interested. There isn't anything groundbreaking or phenomenal about this film, but it wasn't even released in theaters, so I have to assume that anyone watching this is at home, looking for a decent movie to watch. This fit the bill for that, which is what I was looking for- something to entertain for a couple hours. There is suspense, good acting, and the ending does add something new to the plot. It certainly didn't end like I was expecting it to. I enjoyed it and consider it time well spent. I say if you usually like movies with crime, murder, chasing them down, Cusack or Jennifer Carpenter, then you will like this movie.
Law & Order True Crime (2017)
Exceeded Expectations
Although I was interested in this series based on a general enjoyment of true crime and knowing that Edie Falco was the lead, I put it off for a while because I didn't think I would enjoy a story that was so high-profile at the time. I felt that I already knew the story and the ending, so it just wouldn't keep my attention as much as watching a story that could keep me guessing. Luckily, I was wrong! The Law and Order Series, from what I remember when I watched it way back when, shines because of its ability to take the viewer, introduce tough subject matter, and let them see what it is like in the shoes of someone much different than them. Many times, you end the episode with an ambiguity about a subject that you didn't have before, simply because it lets you see the circumstances and emotions behind the people involved, where as before you began, it was more of a black or white subject. It can only do this with good writing, acting and directing, of course, and L&O: True Crime has it all. i had to take a deep breath every time they rolled the credits on the end of another episode. It's one of those shows where you start to feel so much for the characters that you want to step into the screen and give them a hug or shout at them. I loved it and I hope the next one is just as good.
Goosebumps (2015)
Good for young kids/family, but don't expect much.
I took my 6 year old son to see this, as he loves anything scary and it's hard to find anything with monsters that is appropriate enough for him to see. He recently started watching the Goosebumps TV show on Netflix, and so he was familiar with the monsters in the movie. One thing you should know: It is not in the least bit scary. It is perfect for a 6-8 year old kid who likes monsters. There is not a single bit of time given to developing a good plot. For instance, Stine's characters come out of the book when it is opened. Why? Because one day they "became real". That is the extent of an explanation given for anything. The kids in the movie were great for the material they were given. I would guess that a lot of the movie was made just for the 3D effects, which I did not see since we saw the movie in 2D (my kids won't keep the glasses on.) There were a couple scenes where a scene just kind of showed a monster moving around for a little too long and I knew that it was supposed to be a cool 3D effect. Too obvious. Basically, it was made to be a comedy instead of scary, but unfortunately, it's not really funny at all. I do like Jack Black and all the actors- they just weren't given any good material. To sum it up, your 6 year old will probably love it, but It's just not written well enough for an adult to get much enjoyment from.
How to Get Away with Murder (2014)
Slow start, become great by the end
When I first started watching this show, I thought it was truly horrible. The only thing that kept me coming back was hoping that the storyline would get better and the characters would become more in depth and sympathetic. I had gotten used to watching another kind of show that it took me a while to "get" this one. Yes, as other reviewers have pointed out, you have to make this a sort of fantasy story in your mind, because it would and could never happen in real life. Once you do that, just keep watching. The show really becomes great in the last 4 to 5 episodes. If you love crime stories with twists and a dose of humor, then I think that you will love this show. The second half of the season, the story did become more interesting, and the characters became people who you care about (not to say you will like them, but you will want to see what happens to them). I'm looking forward to season 2.
Dog Gone (2008)
Great for kids!
This is a terrific movie for kids ages 8 and under. My son is 6 years old and it's so hard to find a movie that isn't a cartoon, but is age appropriate (meaning that he can understand and follow the plot). We watched this for free with Amazon Prime! Both my kids loved it (ages 4 and 6). He is watching it for the second time right now. It has a great lesson in the end. Obviously, if you are an adult and you even look once at the cover, you know this is not going to be an intellectual movie with top acting, but most kids don't care or need that. The plot is good, funny, and I liked the ending. The kid in the movie is great and likable. I recommend for young children.
This Is the End (2013)
Hilarious and Entertaining
First of all, you will either love or hate this movie with not much in between. I started watching this movie on cable, not expecting to enjoy it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it's a stoner movie and yes it has dumbed down humor. However, I believe that there is definitely a place for this type of comedy and if you go into it knowing the guys who star in it and have seen some of their past movies, then you know what to expect. If you feel like taking a break from the seriousness of drama, then I recommend checking your brain at the door and watching this, especially if you enjoyed The 40 Year Old Virgin, Pineapple Express or Knocked Up.
