Free Guy (2021)
Started out good
This movie actually started out really good. It was going well until the epic motorcycle scene. It had a lot of neat gamer references and because I am a gamer it was really nice to see. What surprises me is how it all went to garbage in the second half. The entire ending could have been avoided by just shutting down power to the servers and I don't know how much the average gamer knows, but I'm pretty sure they know taking an axe to a server is not necessary to shut it down. It was actually insulting to my gamer intelligence. I was just shocked that they put so much time to impress gamers in the beginning and then in the end, insult their intelligence by suggesting a server needs to be destroyed instead of unplugging a power cord to take it down (or shut it down with a typing command). There were alot of technology plot holes in this. Those are my biggest complaints. Me and my husband actually started to fall asleep halfway in. I'll be reasonable and say I would give the first half of this movie a 6 but the second half was definitely a 3.
The Hours (2002)
Garbage
I decided to watch this film based on the fact that I have mental illness and have considered suicide for many years. I have no idea what this movie is trying to say. I couldn't even understand the story. As for realistic? That's a joke. Nothing of what I've experience in my own life was shown in the entire movie. It came somewhat close at the part where Nicole Kidman is talking to her husband at the train station, but it still didn't play out right. The best I can say for this movie is it kept my attention, mostly hoping I would get some kind of explanation for what was happening but I was still pretty confused by the end. Anyway, what can you say? When does Hollywood ever get reality correct in films? You can watch a movie that's considered a true story and Hollywood still butchers it.
The Discarded (2019)
Better than most 2020 films but still...
I will say this film was better than many recent films I've seen. I grew up in a time when plot and storyline actually mattered and films weren't just thrown together like they are today. I do agree with another reviewer that said It has a weak storyline/plot and it's pretty slow. My biggest complaint is that is felt like a musical at times. I can't stand movies that include some actor/actress singing. It feels weird and it doesn't belong. I think music belongs in musicals. Outside of that, it was watchable but that's all I can say. Many films today I can't even finish so I guess that's some kind of compliment but it can't live up to many movies I've seen just 20 years ago.
Her (2013)
I've seen worse
I didn't hate this movie, but I can't really agree with giving it anything over a 4 either. My biggest problem is the OS in the movie. I understand you can't make a movie with Siri because there's no emotions and no feelings with a robot voice, but I do wish they had explained the background for the OS. All they needed to say is the OS was programmed to have feelings and emotions and was able to have sex or masturbate (?). Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I like a back story instead of just assuming things. But even if I do assume this is in the way distant future and this OS is made to be like a human, this movie still didn't wow me. It was different which is always refreshing but still felt odd and confusing at times. Some of the directions they went really didn't make sense to me and I didn't like the ending. Felt like there was more that needed to be said, but it's better than most the movies around this time period so I can live with it.
An American Crime (2007)
Better than expected
I honestly didn't know what to expect when I first read the description on this movie. These days, it doesn't feel like you can trust reviews or a good movie description to tell if a movie is good so I try to take everything with a grain of salt. Once I started watching, I was captivated by this interesting yet insane true story. I have no big complaints which is rare except to say I don't feel like they cast the mother right. I feel like Joan Crawford from mommie dearest did a better job than this actress, but it was ok. My second biggest complaint was they didn't show the extent of the abuse enough in the movie. You know how Hollywood can be, sometimes they sugar coat things, so I googled the girl that died and read about her case and found the true information. I will say, it is surprising that it was worse than the movie depicted. I didn't even think that was possible. Outside of that, they stayed pretty close to the true story. There were some confusing areas, but I liked it a lot and it still shocks me a lot to know something like this really happened in our country. I do wish they had told more about what the abusive mother went through in her life, but I guess you can google that if you need to. Anyway, I highly recommend this movie if you like true story's that are outside of the norm
Prospect (2018)
What the heck?
So I decided to watch this movie based on the most "helpful" reviews on this site. The top 10 most helpful reviews rated this 6 and up. All I can say is what the heck were these people thinking? I read a lot of the good reviews and I will say I understand why people said they liked it. Apparently a lot of these people liked the slowness of the film, but I honestly felt like this movie was just too slow. I don't like much action myself, but this was extremely slow and it almost felt forced to be that slow. A lot of people said they liked the focus on the different planet, but it really wasn't that different than earth. I mean I saw a bunch of trees and ferns, earth has trees and ferns too. My biggest complaint (besides the slowness) was all the new gadgets and technology that was thrown in and not explained. It all looked cheap and we had no idea what most of it was or what it's purpose was. Ok I knew the gun was a gun, but it looked like they just took a bunch of garden tools and threw them together. If your going to introduce us to new technology (even if it looks cheap) at least explain to us what the things do! It didn't feel like any of it connected well. At one point I honestly thought the movie was just for people on drugs. I understand what people liked about it, but I didn't like any of those things. It sounds to me like there's no sure way to predict if you will like this movie or not, but if you can't stand a slow movie, you should definitely avoid this one!
