Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023)
Didn't like it
I was hoping for a fresh story, more from Scott's world, but it was just a rehash from a different character's POV of the same story. Unfortunately the events are way to known to be worth the time to watch the show for those who've already seen it... or should I say, for the events to be rewatched. There's nothing new there. Like, nothing!
If you've seen the movie, this would be a waste of time. Seems more like a milking of a product... as long as cash comes out, who cares, right?
Good thing though, the actors are doing the voices... but, after seeing their performances in the pandemic "Cast Reunion" play, most of them don't seem to want to be there. I could hear that in their voices then, and Takes Off is no different, except for Ellen Wong, she seems to enjoy the playthrough no matter what.
It's a "skip" for me... a "maybe watch" for the newcomers.
The Green Knight (2021)
It is what it is...
It's boring, that's what it is. And pointless.
And I'll leave it at that, quoting the green knight himself: "what else ought there be?"
And why does this have so many fake ratings? Does this ever end?
The Expanse: Nemesis Games (2021)
Good enough given the obstacles...
I've read the reviews and it seems the ignorance that we're living a in a pandemic is not lacking.
I understood perfectly that the show was written and shot with the limitations of the 2020 pandemic in mind, most characters have been paired in groups to minimise interaction as a whole, most scenes were confined to one or a few locations, with the exception of Amos, for whom it was business as usual.
On the Alex / Cas Anvar issue... well, we live in the cancel culture zoomer times. It's unfortunate that the showrunners jumped the gun and already "convicted" the actor and it's unfortunate how his on-screen end came like this. It's undoable if the accusations prove to be exaggerated or won't lead to anything concrete legally wise, which should be the actual basis for anything done to an individual professionally wise. But, as I've seen in the past, these types of people can and do hide perfectly well under a veil of deceptive appearances. They appear decent enough to pass as nice guys. But what the truth is is up to the investigators to uncover.
As for the end, I did not expect that. Good show, gents!
Time (2020)
What is this?
Tried to find a court case for these characters. I did not. Instead I found an appeal case of a Robert Richardson and a nephew of his wife, both who did not attempt to rob a bank as the movie implies but actually robbed it and were caught later that day. The only mention of a Sybil Fox was during the trial when both Rob and Sybil, presented as his wife, tried to tamper with the jury by visiting their homes and coercing them. Two of them were replaced during the trial for this, and in effect they tried to create a possibility for the trial to be ruled a mistrial when the nephew argued he couldn't received a fair trial because of what the two did. Otherwise there was nothing about her being involved in any way. My thought is that she was a placeholder in the story for the nephew, either he did not agree for this part of his life to be publicized or they did not agree on the proceeds for the publications and had to be swapped for a made up character, hence her struggle in the prison system might be fabricated. I can't point it out exactly since the case eludes me but... This is, at best, an artistic adaptation of a real event than an actual documentary of said event. Something like Fargo, but that's it. It's very one sided and misleading, while hiding behind a real event to obtain credibility. On the part of the victimisation, that court document showed a lot of mistakes he did, and the whole focus was on gaming the system in failing the trial. Are the 60 years excessive? Yes! But a victim, he's not, when the had the chance to come clean. Poor life choices will lead to severe punishment and while the punishment in his case seems exaggerated it might serve as a warning about outcomes and personal responsibility in face of clear evidence. Out there there are other cases, far more damaging than his, yet less dramatised and faked. Another striking thing was the changes in names: Sibil Fox, Sybil Fox, Sibil Rich, Sybil Fox Richardson, Rob Rich, Robert Richardson. If it were supposed to be a documentary, it should contain clear identities. This leads me to suspect that they are trying to hide ways for people to arrive at the actual court case and see for themselves what is instead of being told a one-sided story about the prison system. And even regarding this in reality is not the actual issue, since that sentence, the length, the conditions, were part of the justice system (judges and jury) outcome. The issues with the prison system are different and pertain mostly to the kids in this instance. Chances have to be made, abolishing won't be one of them. Overall the mockup-umentary is hard to swallow. Works as an artistic work, but the pushed narrative as being a real event is mostly for the gullible.
Star Wars Resistance (2018)
A downgrade
Viewers should not expect it to be like Clone Wars, not the least bit. Unfortunately, the three creators were not able to sustain the creative process and thinking of George Lucas... with the plethora of content that there exists about the Star Wars universe, that's quite a feat! /s Instead they opted of a childish version of a well established brand. The strange part is that two of the creators were behind Rebels and that one, as a non-Lucas creation, was pretty well done. I guess this one is for the lil' kids, engaging them in the Star Wars universe, with elements that for most adults (who grew up with the saga) will find nonsensical. It's pretty unwatchable for the fans, otherwise enjoyable for the kids. I guess...
