Skyline (2010)
One of the worst movies of the year
This is easily the worst movie I've seen this year. It's saying something when the writing is so bad that even an end-of-the-world alien invasion can't stop boring you senseless.
The characters are passive participants to the events around them. Sure they scream on cue, but their lives and struggles are devoid of feeling and emotions. The film lacks the frantic pace of the somewhat similar Cloverfield where the characters and their environment felt desperate and chaotic. Instead we get destruction without fear and survival without passion.
I'm a big sci-fi fan, but I honestly can't remember the last time I was this bored in the theater despite a few moments of great special effects. Avoid this movie at all costs.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Bad, really really bad
I liked the Matrix. I had a lot of fun with it. But Reloaded is so horrible it's almost hard to believe. As an action movie, it's below average. Worse, it spends most of it's time trying to convince you that it's philosophically significant. Too bad it's about as deep as the village idiot--and about as much fun to listen to.
Beloved (1998)
A noble effort, but a weak movie
Beloved is an agonizingly powerful novel that offers insight into the human capacity for undeniable love and brutal savagery. It explores the nature of the human condition with terrifying honesty. As a film, Beloved looses direction early on, feeling uncertain of itself and the direction it wants to take. Thandie Newton's performance as Beloved is shallow and too easy to read. Her character lacks the ambiguity and the subtly that the character demands, and instead delivers her message by repeatedly slapping the viewer across the face. In short, Beloved assumes the viewer will be unable to follow the intricate implications of the story and so lays them all out in the open where it proceeds to splash tacky neon paint all over them. Rest assured, it does so to its own detriment.
