Make or Break: The Linda Perry Project (2014)
Best new show of 2014
This was the most entertaining and refreshing show of 2014. Linda Perry is a larger than life character and one of the more interesting personalities I have seen on TV or otherwise. She has an incredible ability to weed through b.s. and get to the core of people and their internal problems and desires.
I also loved this show as a music fan. This is the polar opposite of the Voice/American Idol/over-produced nonsense. I like that stuff too and it has its time and place, but what I really appreciate and enjoy is music with raw emotion and originality which is what Linda strives to capture. I think most people feel the exact same way and would also love this show if they ever had the opportunity to see it.
This was easily my favorite show of 2014 and at the very top of the list for all time shows, reality or otherwise.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
Wonderful
PT Anderson (PTA) has provided us with a series of unique, spectacular films (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia), and Punch Drunk Love is an admirable follow up to these modern classics. If you are expecting the typical PTA film, or to a lesser extent the typical Adam Sandler film, you may be disappointed. This film takes both of these Hollywood personalities in different directions.
To say that this is a wasted effort for PTA would be disappointing. This film, unlike his other films, revolves around three or four central characters. These characters are as unique and well developped as any of those in PTAs previous films. Punch Drunk is a romantic comedy with deeper themes of inner frustration and expression. It is a visual masterpiece. The setting, costume, and visual effects give the film a unique feel that is a pleasure to witness.
This film is not Boogie Nights or Magnolia, it is Punch Drunk Love. I for one applaud PTAs movement in a new direction. To repeat his previous work with different characters and dialogue would be unimaginative and dull. I enjoyed this film on many different levels. It was a romantic comedy that provided both aspects of romance and comedy with a sense of depth that is lacking in the majority of films of that genre in cinema today. The big laughs are few, but the subtle laughs are frequent.
Adam Sandler has transcended adequately into the realm of more "serious" roles. I do not know that this trend will continue, for I feel like this role could not have been more perfect for him. He performs this role not only sufficiently, but at times brilliantly.
Open your mind and give this film a fair chance. PTA is one of the finest American directors of our time and his work in this film is remarkable. 9/10
