What happens when you combine idiocy and desperation? A very funny movie thats what!

This movie reminded me of The Dinner Game crossed with The Castle. On one hand it had the audience laughing at the characters but on the other feeling sorry for them. Any movie that can achieve both of these things with such ease is a very good movie. The story is very well thought out and executed. And last but not least, to top it all off, Melbourne, Australia gets a mention! To quote the MIFF guide "Go see the real deal before Hollywood rips it off."

The Bank (2001)

A wonderful movie leading Australia away from 'quirky comedy' so often associated with it.

What an excellent choice of a film to open the 50th Melbourne International Film Festival! This is a movie set in the fast moving world of corporate Melbourne where with the press of a button you can make millions or just as quickly and just as easily loose millions. David Wenham as the maths genius trying to predict the stock market and Anthony LaPaglia as the CEO of the bank under pressure from the bank's directors to increase their profits are outstanding in their roles. LaPaglia's character, Simon O'Reily, finds out about Wenham's character, Jim Doyle's, prediction system based on chaos theory and hires him. The strength of the story comes through here as they both need each other, O'Reily needs Doyle to increase profits and Doyle needs O'Reily to develop his system. Interlaced is the story of a lower class family who business is bound to be liquidated and bankrupted by the bank due to them not being able to pay bank a foreign currency loan. The photography is brilliant with excellent shots accompanying certain statements by the characters such as when O'Reily is talking about it being 'a jungle out there' and the camera shows an overhead shot of the central business district. This film is bound to be a classic piece of Australian cinema and the twist at the end is easily on par with The Sixth Sense & Unbreakable. A must see for anyone who likes quality suspenseful dramatic films.
