Harlan Coben's Shelter (2023)
I've never read Coben but I've watched a few
The fact that they keep making Coben dramas either means he's got something on somebody powerful, or his books are actually good. I'm going with the latter. But EVERY single one of these dramas has a similar wooden and disjointed feel. At no point do you know what's going to happen next, and not in a good way. It's baffling. I'm watching the final episode as I write this, and I can honestly say I wouldn't be able to explain the underlying point of this story. What are we supposed to learn here, what is the motivation of anyone in this story? There are some sub plots which don't even need to be there, they add nothing, they relate to nothing. The whole point in a narrative is its relevance to the plot. What plot?
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
Was it low budget? It felt so. Badly executed
A great idea. And I can see that it would sort of work if it was put together better. There's a sort of feeling you get with each scene like: was that as bad as I thought it was. Then the CGI kicks in and you think, ok, I'll look past this. But Idris Elba... come on.. other than Luther (in which I think he just plays himself) what has he been good in? Nothing. Even Tilda is awful, it's all very embarrassing. They cut to these other stories which are sort of ok, but really, this feels like someone wanted to tell some cool Arabian type tales in a sort of Scheherazade way, but just didn't have that right team or director, or something. The hotel room in robes in which the takes are told is totally uninspiring, and the lighting is all off, way too bright. It's feels so amateur this film, and these days we expect a lot more. I'm really of the mind that the only good films now are kids or action. And that drama and fantasy are best done in a streamed series.
Scoob! (2020)
Ignore the adults giving this a low score
This is a kids movie. It's a good kids movie.
Dear Adults,
Your life will not be fixed by the perfect reboot of a movie based on characters from your childhood. Just accept the movie for what it is and not what you thought "they could have done". It's ok, it has a story, it's funny ish in places. My kids didn't walk away and smash stuff up, so this is a winner.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
An allegory on climate change
Very straightforward sci fi with some nice good feels layered in there. If you're looking for a decent action movie with a bit of heart, look no further.
Âya to majo (2020)
The ending
I put up with the story and some of the animation was ok, but really not up to scratch. Awful script. Totally odd translations ("spick and span" to mean "great"). But the ending!??????? Literally a theatre full of stunned parents and children, where's the conclusion? What were we building up to?
The Clockwork Girl (2014)
Animation is so pathetically bad (unfinished)
The animation and general finish ruins this movie. It could have been ok (at best) but it's not. The sound and animation post production has not been done. It's shoddy. A tax dodge?
