Great for gross out, but poor physical effects
28 August 2009
For Halloween type gross out this was fine, but no cigar on follow thru on all physical injury - Christine would be slammed against a counter one minute, the next, makeup was perfect with no signs of injury. The old lady gets stabbed in the mouth, reels from the pain, but is kicking butt like no ones business the next minute. The house would get trashed one minute, but all is perfect in the next cut.

This started great, but it appeared to me that Raimi couldn't decide whether to do comedic horror or straight horror. As the movie wore on, it appeared that someone felt additional length was needed so they threw in scenes that really didn't seem to follow the story well.

Cube (1997)

Just keeps on going and going and going
7 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Rented this based on the strong (7.5) rating here at IMDb. As a rule I find ratings here are pretty accurate, but this one however is way off the mark. Several characters stuck in a cube, some obviously chosen for their particular ability, but others seem to have just been put there to make a story, then have them blunder from room to room for a while, watch how they interact a bit, then kill off most of them at the end.

Performances across the board are OK so my real complaint is with the writers as they take us through the cube, nothing is ever resolved or explained - yeah, we get to hear that no one is currently in charge of the cube, but please, don't insult viewers by simply asking us to believe that this thing just magically got built with no conceivable purpose but to zap people! Then there's the ending - talk about lack of resolution. This was definitely a case of 'ok, we have enough film in the can, time to quit' - and that's exactly what they do. Had the writers spent some time and come up with a creative ending, it could have save this film and made it a true 7.5. But as is, I'd say take a pass unless it's the only thing available.

Keeps you interested and then....

Warning: Spoilers
takes you nowhere! There were enough plot elements to keep me watching, but nothing happens in this movie. Keach and Pena have cameos and that's it. Coulda used anybody for either role and it would not have detracted from this film so don't watch this movie to see either one of these two show their considerable talents.

The 'bad guy' is not even really bad. I mean there's a jilted lover and a disgruntled employee - two characters that had the potential for some cool action/revenge and they both go out with a wimper! There's a great storm, in a house, in an isolated location and NOTHING HAPPENS! Obviously, Pollard had a decent budget for this film because it's well done but it just rather pointless.

For Merlot consumers only.
29 January 2005
Having read the book first, this was a major disappointment. While Giamatti & Company did an acceptable job of acting, the screenplay was a true hack job on a well written novel. The meaning of the title didn't even get a mention. How Payne managed to remove all the fun, passion and angst out of every character in the book is truly amazing. Characters, that in the novel made you love them one minute, despise them the next, laugh at them later were completely one dimensional. Pickett should sue and Payne should never write another screenplay.

Thomas Hayden Church came across as a surfer dude with very little of the Jack portrayed in the novel. Virgina Madsen could have been played by just about any actress as both her role, as written by Payne, and her appearance were forgettable.

I'm amazed at the hype, but then again, I'm amazed at the gallons of Merlot that occupy all the shelves in the grocery store.

Bad as Film Noir, bad as Porn
1 March 2004
This movie wouldn't have been made without a name like Meg Ryan - slow moving and ultimately pointless. Characters are flat and there is no desire to empathize with any of them. Ultimately, anyone who's been on the planet for more than a few years has to ask themselves, who really talks and acts like this? What is the point of the BJ at the beginning?! If the writers & directors felt it was important to the plot, it should have been presented in such a way as to make sure it wasn't cut from the R rated version or use some other device to achieve there goal. As it is, the BJ in the uncut version is the only topic of discussion, and if that's your thing, rent a good ole hard core!

Typical Jim Carey fare...
26 December 2003
This is just a vehicle for Mr Carey's narrow range of comedy so if you're not into typical Jim Carey style exaggerated facial expressions, leave this one on the shelf.... I can't figure out his popularity - we all get the willies at the thought of watching a Jerry Lewis movie, but can't wait for this guy to make another movie.

Poor execution of a good premise...
21 December 2002
The whole movie seemed to suffer from poor editing - every scene seemed to take forever to unfold and when they did, I felt like I had waited a long time for very little to happen. I guess I missed the whole point of the movie - either that or there wasn't one.

Just another pointless movie
17 August 2002
This is one of the movies where, when it's all over, you wondered why you just wasted the last 2 hours. Someone seemed to be trying to make a point, but it was certainly lost on me. Channing did an OK job, but the material is so thin, she certainly didn't excel. Pass this turkey up.

Talk about blatent in your face moralizing
10 June 2002
This movie is sooo black & white - stereotypical, big fat or old white guys who hate everyone not like themselves... Nothing special here, just a reminder that Jews have been the target of a lot of discrimination - duh... I don't need the reminder or the lecture, thanks anyway.

One pointless movie. 'Go Figure' is the appropriate response to why did they make this movie?
28 March 2002
Great dialogue if you're learning French, but there is little other reason to watch this movie. Characters had no motivation for their actions, the plot was all but nonexistent.
