Tiger Cruise (2004)
Outstanding!
I was most impressed with this latest Disney original. I have found many Disney movies to be fun and entertaining, but this one is phenomenal. The story is well written and both entertaining and emotionally intense. The acting is exceptional. Bill Pullman did a great job in this movie. The child actors were right on the mark as well. Troy Evans's portrayal of Mr. Horner was both intensely dramatic and enjoyably comic. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and it sparked interesting conversations with my children. It was a great angle on the 9/11 story and was based on factual events. A friend of mine whose son is in the Navy was actually on a similar cruise on 9/11.
All the themes addressed in the movie, patriotism, obedience, loyalty, compassion and sacrifice are values that are too often ignored in our society today and especially in the movies. Although it doesn't have a snowball's chance (political correctness and all that)...it should win SOME KIND of an award...Best Made for TV Movie?
The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius (2002)
Intelligent Fun!
The movie is good, the series is better! My favorite episode is "Jet Fusion"--EXCELLENT episode with a great cast. This is undoubtedly the best animated program that Nick has ever produced.
I just had to write a decent comment to replace the last one that I read. A previous commenter did not like the show very much, saying that it was aimed at 3 to 6 year olds--must have been over his head (as is evidenced by his expanded vocabulary). Not to mention, it IS a cartoon and cartoons typically DO target children.
However, this show actually targets a much older age group, with references to episodes of the old Twilight Zone (such as the Burgess Meredith episode where he was the last man on earth) and other old television shows. It also frequently employs "gags" that my children don't get because they are just too young. However, there is plenty of up-to-date fun for the kids to enjoy the show.
While thoroughly entertaining, the show manages to teach some great values as well. After all, the star is super smart and still has friends, showing that you can be intelligent and still have social skills. It also teaches children to think their way out of problems, without pushing it so hard that it detracts from the story.
Anyone that doesn't find this show fun is either too young to get the jokes, or just way too old to remember what fun is!
What a Girl Wants (2003)
Very cute!
It amazes me to see the volume of negative comments on this adorable movie. The movie is fun--a blissfully family friendly flick that provides two hours of pure escapism. I was contentedly entertained and left the movie with my children wanting to see it again and my husband commenting that even his parents could watch this movie. It is so hard today to find a movie you can recommend to your parents, but this one is clean enough for kids and grandparents alike.
Four thumbs up!
A Knight's Tale (2001)
Fun! Fun! Fun!
I haven't had this much fun since "Galaxy Quest". Take one part romance, one part con job, one part serious jousting, and one part rags to riches and you get one seriously enjoyable movie! Halfway through the movie I told my husband "I have to have this on DVD". His response was, "You owe me big for this"--to each his own. If you are expecting a serious jousting movie, forget it (although, the jousting is really good!). But, if you want to have an incredible amount of fun, see this movie more than once!
Warlords of Atlantis (1978)
There is nothing better than a bad Doug McClure movie!
When it comes to bad "B" movies, Doug is the King! Some movies are just plain bad (i.e. "The Grifters") while others are exquisitely bad ("Warlords of Atlantis"). I will say this, "The Land That Time Forgot" is much "badder"! Don't get me wrong on this--I love all Doug McClure movies for the simple reason that they are so wonderfully bad. And I cried when I heard he had passed away--long live Doug on the screen!
