Dobermann (1997)
Ultraviolent and shocking - fantastic!
If you're a fan of John Woo and his stylised action then you'll love this. Its got a story similar to Killing Zoe (about a gang of bank robbers) only this has more oddball characters, and even better action. Jan Kounen is definitely a director to look out for in the future, and his super-stylish camera shots and scene edits are pretty cool.
The cast are excellent. Tcheky Karyo is the most memorable as the sadistic, psychopathic cop Inspector Saveur Christini. He plays this villain in a very subtle, disturbing and haunting way and steals every scene he's in. Vincent Cassel is also great as the title role, anti-hero Dobermann - a badass bank robber of the new millennium who looks and acts super-cool. Monica Bellucci is also good as the deaf and almost dumb heroine, Nat the Gypsy. All of the cast members that play Dobermann's gang are equally good.
If you like action movies, then you'll love the action scenes in this. Well staged gunfights and graphic moments (such as when a grenade inside a cop's motorbike helmet explodes and takes his head off) are well executed.
But if you're not a big fan of sickening politcal incorrectness then back off away from this film, cos its littered with it. For example, Christini hands a grenade to a baby and tells him to "have a blast". There's also loads of bad language, transvestites, sex and nudity as well as violence.
I give this film 10/10 because it is extremely badass and a worthwhile watch. It'll keep you hooked.
The Black Hole (1979)
Not bad, but I don't buy the ending...
This started off well, and you can see where the inspiration for Event Horizon came from. It had good special effects and above average performances from the cast, as well as a fairly decent plot and good script, and the director seemed to know where he was going......Until the end. What happened? The ending was a load of sh*te, and it didn't really make much sense. It spoilt the film for me, which is why I've only gave it six out of ten,
Bedhead (1991)
Neat little short...
The only place you're likely to see this is on the El Mariachi/Desperado DVD. You see, its a short black-and-white movie made by Robert Rodriguez - yes him!
Bedhead is just a bit of fun. The child actors are his siblings, and he just makes them play around to the basic plot while he films with his usual supercool camera angles and shots.
Nothing much, just a cool piece of entertainment. Its just the perfect length of time to watch - any longer and it would have been sh*te.
Event Horizon (1997)
For fans of gore and Sam Neill
Its like a remake of Alien and The Black Hole, with better special effects but a similar story: a rescue crew go to investigate a space ship which has been missing for years, find out it has been to hell and back and kills the crew off one by one.
Despite this clichéd plot, its still good. The effects are great, the acting from everyone is very good - especially Sam Neill, and the action sequences are great for fans of gore. It also has some genuinely scary bits too. Still one of my favourites.
Desperado (1995)
Supercool...
I am a HUGE fan of Robert Rodriguez, and I have to say that this is my favourite of his movies. Its got all his trademarks, such as the fading camera shots and the western-rock style soundtrack, as well as John Woo-inspired action sequences.
Sure, the plots a bit thin: wandering musician comes to town to kill an underworld baron because he hates gangsters. But what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for with supercool visuals and all round godliness. Yes, Rob Rodriguez IS god!
Excellent shoot-outs, great acting from Banderas and Hayek, cameos from Rodriguez's usual crew (Cheech Marin, Tito Laviras, Danny Trejo, etc) and also Quentin Tarantino, and also a cool script. Watch this now!
Wing Commander (1999)
Top Class Entertainment
Being a fan of the games WCIII and WCIV, I couldn't wait to see this film version. I had since Freddie Prinze Jr try to act before, and wouldn't exactly call myself a big fan of his, so I was slightly weary as to whether or not this film would be any good.
The plot isn't all that original, and the script doesn't break any new grounds either. But I've given this film 10/10 because it is so damn entertaining. The action scenes are cool, the special effects are brilliant, and the characters are worth watching. Prinze Jr is excellent as the young Blair, Matthew Lillard is, as always, scene-stealing as Maniac, and the rest of the support cast are equally impressive. Also, listen out for Mark Hamill, who does the voice of Merlin, Blair's ships computer.
If you're a fan of the game, you'll probably love this as much as me. Anyone else will like this film if they don't mind watching quality entertainment rather than some three hour epic. Top class entertainment.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Cool sci-fi?
Remember the days when only spotty geeks liked science fiction? Those days have gone, what with the appearance of the recent sci-fi movies like Starship Troopers, Wing Commander, and this - The Fifth Element.
Luc Besson's unimitable style has created one of the best sci-fi flicks to date, with impressive visuals and excellent direction. The special effects are great, and his vision of the future is cool but gaudy.
The story is the usual run-of-the-mill world-in-danger scenario, made better by the humour, special fx and performances. Bruce Willis is great in one of his best roles to date and Gary Oldman proves yet again that he ranks as high as Sean Connery and Anthony Hopkins as one of the best actors to come out of the UK.
Definitely worth 10 out of 10...
