L'ennui (1998)
Excellent and painful
Even though I'm not a philosophy professor nor in mid-life I felt every bit of the emotions that Martin went through. I lived much of the same experience(divorce and then new relationship) he does in this movie. The movie evoked strong emotions in me and was almost painful to watch as Martin became more obsessed over Cecelia. Sophie Guillemin is gorgeous and Cecelia was a perfect counter for Martin. While I rate this movie very highly I'm not sure I ever want to see it again. Much too painful, but also excellent.
I've been watching a lot of foreign(mostly French, Italian and Japanese) movies of late and this ranks right near the top.
Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)
Even a straight guy...
I like all kinds of movies and rented this because it seemed interesting. I've always had this weird desire to move to the South of France or Italy. That might be part of why I rented this, up and leaving and never returning home. A faint dream of mine.
Anyway, it was an average movie until Frances said something about divorce not killing you but it should. I was divorced a couple years ago and haven't fully recovered yet. When she said that, I nodded my head(someone understands!!) and fell into the story as if it were mine.
I'm a straight guy, but I really liked this movie and it's now on my list to purchase. Weird, but it's a good movie.
xXx (2002)
Take your brain out and enjoy
I liked this movie even though I didn't need my brain to enjoy it!
Moonstruck (1987)
My top romantic comedy
Being a guy I shouldn't like romantic comedies, but I really like Moonstruck. It's funny and not too sugary and I like that it doesn't portray love as being easy. It's not.
I own this on DVD but wish it would have been widescreen, which I understand you can't get. But I watch this every couple months when I need a laugh.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Indescribably good
Being a white, American male the tendency would be for me to see comedies with fart jokes or action movies with lots of blood and gore. For some reason I felt the need to see Amelie and you know what? It was great. I'll probably see it again and get it on DVD when released. This is just a plain funny movie with enough romance to be a good date movie. Go see it, really!
