Cellular (2004)
Great concept, intense suspense, so-so acting
This was an extremely creative film. The plot was very creative, as were the situations proposed to the main character(s) in the film. I must say that although Kim Basinger's performance left more than a little to desire, Chris Evans's performance was magnificent. This was the first time I'd seen him in a dramatic role (he was hysterical as Jake Wyler in Not Another Teen Movie). He played the suspenseful role of Ryan very believably. Ironically, some of the film's better comedic element came in the beginning from Eric Christian Olsen, Evans's co-star in Not Another Teen Movie. In addition to Olsen's scenes, there are other parts of the film that deliver a good chuckle - and others that will deliver a nice jolt or even an, "Oh, crap!" This film would have been must better if either Naomi Watts or Ashley Judd were in Basinger's role, and if the director had paid more attention to details. You'll enjoy this film if things like continuity errors (and even seeing the camera tower in the background in one shot) don't bother you.
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989)
What a beautiful film!
A loud, garrulous, chauvinistic, vulgar thief (played brilliantly by Michael Gambon), and his reserved, miserable wife (Helen Mirren - another great actress), who frequent the same restaurant. The wife notices a gentleman who's another regular customer, and the two begin an affair. Their secret is kept by the cook, who hates the chauvinistic thief. The film was incredibly intense, and definitely stayed in my mind long after I watched it. It may be the most beautifully filmed movie that I've ever seen. Each room in the film (and there aren't many, maybe six) has its own color, and Helen Mirren's outfit changed color depending on which room she entered. It did a lot to set a specific tone for each room. Also, the ending to the film was incredible, as I'd heard. Everyone is encouraged to see this (provided you are not offended terribly easily), but only if you can watch the full version, which is rated NC-17. There was an R-rated version released in the U.S., but I just don't see how it could even live up to the version I saw, as there is almost a 20 minute difference between the two. Not for the squeamish, but a totally incredible film!
Funland (1987)
Intended as comedy, neither action nor horror
I'm sure many people sit down to watch this film expecting horror. Although the chintzy tagline does suggest an even chintzier slasher flick, this movie rises above that genre. It's not a slasher flick at all, which is just fine. If anything, I would definitely classify this film in the Dark Comedy genre. It's almost an amusing and mocking look at insanity. The story is an interesting one, and a very creative one at that. Watch it if you enjoy a good chuckle, but not if you're looking for some cheap gore or contrived "pop-out" scare tactics. Prepare yourself for lots and lots of ethnic stereotyping, but done in such a way that it mocks those who actually believe in such stereotypes. The thing that makes this film a dark comedy is not only its ability to poke fun at bigots by catering to their ridiculous beliefs, but also at the utter random (and often crude) humor. If you enjoy films like Better Off Dead and I Love You to Death, it's almost guaranteed that you'll like this movie.
Color of Night (1994)
One of the Best Suspense Films Ever
This is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, and it's definitely on my Top 10 Best movies of all time list, possibly my Top 5. If you like a good mystery, a plot twist, and awesome characters, all combined nicely with a hint of eroticism, then this is absolutely the film for you. The ending is completely unbelievable, and one of the most suspenseful scenes in Hollywood history, right up there with Jodi Foster's chase through the dark in Silence of the Lambs.
It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown (1984)
I loved this special
I thought this was one of the Peanuts best specials! I love the music and the dancing. Snoopy looks great in torn up sweats! The breakdancing scene on the street is my favorite. And whoever sang the title track should have gotten a grammy because I love that song. If anyone happens to have any of the soundtrack at all would you please e-mail me? Thanks a bunch!
