The Village (2004)
Probably the best cinematic experience you will have this year at the movies.
The Village, many dislike it, many love it. And that's definitely the kind of movie this is: love it or hate it. I put in my vote in the love it side. But even if you don't like it, you can't deny how well it was done. The music is enchanting and sent chills up my spine while I was sitting in the theater. That's something that very rarely happens to me (which is why I now have the soundtrack). It's just simply beautiful and fitting of the movie. In my own opinion, this is Shyamalan's best work. This tops The Sixth Sense in my map. Yes, I agree, that it is a little predictable (that's why I give it a 9 instead of a 10), and very different from anything he's done before. But that's what is so beautiful about this movie. It's a big risk to do a movie like this in our society. And ultimately, this is not meant to be a thriller, it's meant to be a character drama, and it excels at what Shyamalan meant to make of it. But I would recommend this to all who enjoy Shyamalan's work. The best cinematic experience you will have this year. Hands down.
Saints and Soldiers (2003)
A triumph in war movies
In my own opinion, this is a triumph for war movies. It's just as intense as any war movie, but doesn't contain all the blood and guts our society today gives us. It has enough to convince the audience that it's all real and then brings you into the atmosphere by the fantastic acting. (Kudos to all actors involved) This is also a low-budget film, which helps you appreciate it even more because there are no signs of that small budget. This is just as intense as pretty much any war movie you will ever see, but you don't have to worry about it being too violent or bloody. It's just as compelling because it puts you inside the eyes of the soldiers themselves. I hope that all who have access to see this movie take advantage of it because this is a side of cinema that isn't seen often.
God's Army (2000)
Thank you God's Army filmakers
This movie is one of a kind. It has comedy, drama, and plenty of other stuff. It's about a 19-year-old Mormon who goes on a mission, but doesn't know exactly why. Even if you're not a Mormon you've got to see this movie. It'll make you laugh and cry (I did). Simply the best movie ever made for a long time. Out of **** I'd give it *****. It's that good.
