La casa con la scala nel buio (1983)
Very scary giallo
Okay. A lot of the negative things that people have said about this movie are right on the money. The dubbing is HORRIBLE. To the point of nonsense. The "cockroach" scene is a bit odd. The plot and plot twists are at times predictable and cliche.
Now the good parts about this giallo. Its f****** scary!!! Some of the slow stalk sequences and cat and mouse chases are absolutely nerve shattering. Lamberto Bava layed on the atmosphere double thick here. The violence is terrifying and brutally graphic. The score is without doubt the best I've heard in a giallo. And I've seen the Argento films and many others.
Final analysis: Technically speaking its flawed, very flawed, but as a slasher/giallo/horror movie its atmospheric and scary. And my personaly favorite giallo.
*** (out of ****)
Offerings (1989)
Time has been kind to this movie.
When I first saw OFFERINGS three years ago I absolutely despised it for being a complete rip-off of one of my favorite horror movies Halloween. I recently got bored and decided to rent it from my local video store. I was looking forward to ripping it a new one Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style with my buddies. They all had a good laugh at it (they had never even heard of the damn thing). I was somewhat taken back by it. It is a rip-off movie, yes, but you know what It is a pretty slick rip-off movie. You could do a whole lot worse when it comes to low budget slasher films. I actually have come to appreciate the style it creates in some of its scenes. Don't get me wrong its still packed with laugh out loud bad acting and things of that nature but what the hell? Not even close to being as bad as I once thought it was. I say give Offerings a view. In my book it deserves at least a 4.
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
The most underrated horror movie of all time!
Sleepaway Camp is a great movie! It is too bad that either most people have never heard of it, or that those that have seem to dislike the movie. It is NOT a Friday the 13th rip-off. It is far superior to that film. I like Friday the 13th, don't misunderstand me, but SC is more than your typical slasher film. It is full of emotion, drama, mystery and a genuinely scary atmosphere. The murder scenes are original and gruesome. The acting is WAY above average by ALL those involved. Felissa Rose especially gives a phenomenal performance as the shy messed up teenager Angela. You will never forget her!. But all in all the whole cast delivers the goods and then some. The movie really pacts a punch. The shocking climax has been well documented, but every scene in this movie is a treasure to behold. I strongly recommend it to all open minded people out there. The music is great as well. Both the score by Edward Bilous and the three songs by Frankie Vinci are perfect for it! Sleepaway Camp gets a well deserved 10 from me. Forget the lousy sequels, discover this obscure masterpiece!
