despite what you think...
25 August 2001
I just wanted to add, Even though I've only seen Dogma, and apparently didn't get all the references, I thought this movie was hilarious! I know what you're thinking, "I'll bet you're just a simple idiot who wants to hear f-words". Well, let me just tell you...you're probably right! Long live Jay and Silent Bob! But I'm seriously, this was one of those movies that left me with that tingly feeling, the one that says "I'm actually cool and smart at the same time!"

Rip off!!!!

This was a pretty good movie. Like others have said, dumb but lots of fun. And the music - especially the techno - was the best I've heard in a movie. But of all the aspects of Point Break they ripped off - befriending the charismatic leader of the gang, said gang illegally financing their endless summer\streetrace, even the adrenaline theme - after all that, did they have to gank the scene where Keanu "gets inside" by eating at the girl's workplace? I was just waiting for this guy to spit out a high pitched, 'dude'-heavy "shrimp and fry"...

wanted to like it

I really, really tried to like this movie. The only other climbing movie I had seen was K2, which, despite the low budget and the melodrama, is one of my all time favorites. Vertical Limit looked like "K2 + great special effects/sound = dream come true" Holy ass, Batman, did they blow it!

First let's start with the nitro glycerin. Why would they blast in a place with an obvious risk of starting another avalanche? Would they even consider it?

Why would they use something so ridiculously unstable? Wouldn't dynamite be immune to freezing? I know, I know, Sean Connery's in the Hummer, and he's running into everything trying to block us...

What was with the leaking cannisters?????

Why wouldn't the person who authorized the use of nitro have access to information like 'keep it out of the sun'?

Next is the helicopter drop off scene. Like they would take the risk of jumping 1) off the chopper, 2) out over the abyss, 3) onto the mountain. Why wouldn't the pilot just fly the extra ten feet to where there was ground under them? Also, why wouldn't he just descend 100 feet where the air is more dense, so he could fly straight, rather than risking bobbing around, hitting someone with the rotors.

I love how they couldn't even think of something different for the bad guy to do. As if he'd be in the same situation twice, now he's the "serial shot stealer". Look out, that dastardly dex nabber is at it again!

OK, enough diatribe. I give it a 6 for the snow.

underrated

This movie delivers on its promise: the feeling of high adrenaline excitement. The personal lives of the characters are just fodder, but the climbing scenes are breathtaking! I also liked how the film showed the details of such an enormous undertaking, such as test-runs and problems with porters. Whoever said there were cliched aspects, come on! How many climbing movies have people seen before?

Back to the climbing scenes. The ones of the test-run mountain in the U.S. are great, with music that is truly original, and perfectly matches the visuals, giving you the feeling of being 'high'. But the scenes I like most are the ones of climbing the big mountain, especially when they break out the full ice climbing gear. It might make a difference that I've spent much time skiing in Vermont, which has somewhat of an extreme outdoors feel(moreso than Pennsylvania, anyway). I was reminded of some cool times, and felt like actually going out and learning to climb! Dont miss this one!

what a ripoff

Like so many other people, I was led to believe (by the trailers and commercials) that this movie was in the vein, or at least in the genre, of American Pie and Something about Mary. I thought it would be laughs first, romantic twit-fodder second. But it just goes to show that now we're going to have to start STUDYING the trailers -- looking for tricks like this.

If you're a big fan of romance comedies, then this movie might not leave that feeling of pulsing anger when you leave halfway through. Even if you are, though, you might expect some of the latter half of the term "romance comedy". No dice.

To sum the movie up, the producers figured out that it would be profitable to hire the hottest stars (Suvari and Biggs) of the movie that is the reigning king of teen comedies(American Pie - great movie, btw), throw them together (while they're still relatively cheap) along with some advertising and a bare bones movie with something akin to a plot (geek gets out) and script (character types that don't exist in the real world).

The resulting pile of ass is just a drain on our patience and our wallets.
