Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Performances Make It
I so wanted to Love this movie. And...to a degree--I did. But, I was slightly disappointed---because I found it somewhat slow and overlong. As a film, it lacks the emotional punch I expected.Heath Ledger and Jake G. were superb though, and all the actors excelled. Heath Ledgershould win this years Oscar. Ang Lee's direction was very good--though not as polished as his work on "Sense and Sensibility" and "CrouchingDragon"---he at times, seems to e wanting this film to be the gay "Last Picture Show"---I am surprised he didn't shoot it in black and white. I will say this though, This is a movie that stays with you--and is probably a movie that will improve with repeated viewings (after the idea of what is expected is moot--- and especially because of the actors) As far as the "controversy" over it being a "Gay" love story---that is for the media to hype and ponder, I found it are refreshing and human Love story. I totally recommend it!
As Good as It Gets (1997)
IT HOLDS UP!
Just watched this again on NBC (tv) and was amazed how great a showcase this is for actors who KNOW how to act! I had seen this at the movies when first released in 97--and liked it a lot. Then saw again on VHS (remember that? hee!)..But,it's been a few years-----still, even on tv, with bleeps, cuts & commercials, this movie is super! Jack, of course, is excellent....However, the real reasons to see this film---are Helen Hunt & Greg Kinnear (both have NEVER been better!)--except Kinnear has come close with "Auto-Focus" and even "Stuck On You"----dunno WHAT happened with Helen! No matter....IF you want to see an absolutely fantastic character-driven movie--that combines laugh-out-loud comedy with heart-tugging humanity--THIS is a film to check out! (P.S. The dog is GREAT too!)
Gilda Radner: It's Always Something (2002)
WOW!
This made-for-TV film -was the BEST possible adaptation of Gilda Radner's "It's Always Something" Jami Gertz --always an ok actress --was FANTASTIC here --this is truly a breakthrough role --and I think, a performance that might well win her an Emmy Award. I --was dazzled! Hope it gets repeated soon -was sorry I didn't tape it!
The Pleasure Seekers (1964)
Hmmmmm I LIKED WHAT I SAW
Granted ---this movie is sooo 60's! But, I thought it was a fun film. Granted, there was a mad attempt to recapture the 50's here (DID NOT WORK)---but it was easy on the eyes and entertaining----PLUS Ann-Margret was indeed Ravishing! ---especially in that PINK ruffled dress singing the title tune! Worked For Me!!!
Oklahoma! (1955)
Happy To See the REAL version at last!
I had heard for years that the video VHS and TV broadcast versions of "Oklahoma!" were made from alternate takes from the original Todd-AO filimazation of R & H 's classic musical. Now after seeing this absolutely stunning DVD - I understand what all the fuss was about. The movie is smoother, less stilted - and a truer version of the stage musical - with captivating performances by Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, Gloria Grahame (her "I Can't Say No" is priceless!) et al. The DVD transfer of the original Todd=AO print is pure eye candy!! A must for musical lovers!
