A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
kicks the snot out of "2001: A Space Oddesey)
Steven spielberg is possibly the most brilliant director who has ever lived. After all "Amistad" through "Shindler's List" down through "Raiders of The Lost Ark" "Close Encounters" "Jaws" all the way down to "Duel"... a string of simply unbeatable movies. Bear in mind that Spielberg has made some horrible movies. 'Pop-tarts' such as "Jurrasic Park" and "ET" However, Speilberg really shows why he is the master with this one. AI does something that rights a wrong from a long time ago. The best way for me to explain this is with a simple idea: Think of "AI" as though it were Kubrick's "2001 A Space Oddesey" only with "AI" the plot and resolution actually go together and make sense. From A Cinamatographic viewpoint, these movies are quite similar. In fact "AI" is better from the cinematography viewpoint, and utilizes the latest in CGI and digitized worldry. I think it is important to mention that it does feel like a Kubrick Film, (Particuarlly "2001") Only this film ("AI") is much better. For anyone who wanted to put a shotgun slug through there head after seeing "2001" fall off of the cliff of greatness into a fiery pit of inacceptability, "AI" will provide vengance. PS: Don't take the kids, the concepts in this film are all adult.
Joe Dirt (2001)
Film falls flat.
First of all, let me clarify that this film does not do a good job of developing a plot. Most of the actions which are critical to the plot are those involving Joe's search for his parents. The fact that Joe does not understand where his home is seems trite to me, and lets face it, if I were shacked up within a hundred miles of Brittney Daniel, I would probably know where my home is at. Another thing is the Dennis Miller comments. Although I can agree with that Dennis Miller can be funny from time to time, his portrayal of the jackass radio host is a far cry from Howard Stern (whom he immitates very poorly.) The way that the director sets his character up, the viewer actually begins to hate Dennis Miller. I saw the movie at the theater, and at times there were yawns and growls coming from the other viewers simply because we had to hear more Dennis Miller. The lamest part of the plot occurs when Joe finally finds what he is looking for, and spends about two minutes resolving what takes an hour and a half to build up. The one thing which saves this movie is not Dennis Miller, nor is it the pretty Brittney Daniel, who is in the film for about a total of ten minutes, it is Christopher Walken. Christopher Walken's character "Clem" is absolutely hilarious. So basically I paid 8 dollars to see three minutes of Christopher Walken saying hilarious things. I'm sorry to say this, but the movie would have been better off as an SNL skit. I'm also sorry to David Spade who is normally an above average actor. If you want to see good David Spade, go to the video store and rent "Lost and Found" I feel this film falls flat for one reason, David Spade is not playing the role of the sarcasim machine, but rather Dennis Miller is, and this does not gel because David Spade does sarcasm with the best of the best. Don't go into this movie expecting to see the usual "Just Shoot Me" David Spade, or the "Tommy Boy" David Spade, because in this movie, David spade acts more like a shier version of Damon Wayans chracter "Blankman." Not worth a dime without Christopher Walken, with Walken, worth a dollar fifty matinee!
High Fidelity (2000)
This film changed my life.
I don't really know just how thankful I can be for this film, but I owe it my utmost gratitude. This film changed my life. When I saw it, I was on spring break, and my girl was off in Florida. It really made me take a look at our relationship. It started the wheels turning in my head, about how my own relationship was going. Before I could get all of my thoughts sorted, she ended our two year relationship, luckily. On the night after she left me, I watched this film again, and it helped to start putting things in perspective. I then watched it on each of our aniversaries for three months, and by the last time I had watched it, I had sorted out the entirety of our relationship into one little idea: "Top 5 words that describe my relationship with @#$%&*" I wont say what these are, but they were not too kind to @#$%&* This movie could change your life too, especially if you're stuck in a poor relationship, or your relationship is seems frozen in time.
Also, it is a damned hilarious film. Thank you Rob G for your Top 5's, they changed my life.
Animal Factory (2000)
My comments are going to tell you to see this movie!
I must say that I enjoy Steve Buscemi very much, from his comical roles as the homeless guy in Big Daddy, or as Danny Veltri in Billy Madison, to his more serious roles, such as Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs, and his great performance in Living In Oblivion. As far as those serious roles go, that is a more rare side to Steve that is not seen as much, but that deserves much merit. It is for this very reason that I bought a copy of Animal Factory without ever having seen it or knowing anyone who has seen it. I did it because I had faith that Steve Buscemi would be able to make a great film with a cast like Ed Furlong and Willem Dafoe, and even Tom Arnold and Mickey Rourke. We'll, my faith was great, because I was sent straight to heaven as soon as I turned the movie on. The performances are believable, realistic, and stimulating. The conditions within the prison that Buscemi has re-created are awesome. I enjoyed this movie very much. It has brief spats of hilarity, as we'll as a complexly dramatic plot, and quite an unusual plot twist at the climax. If you liked Fight Club, then I suggest you see Animal Factory, I give it a 9.
The Patriot (1998)
I Think This Is A Sad Movie...
This film is without a doubt the worst action film I have ever seen. I am sorry, but it is just pathetic. In fact, the best part of the movie (this movie is supposed to be a serious one) is when a chicken speeds across the road, on foot, at about 100 miles per hour. This pathetic editing mistake makes the film absolutely hilarious for approximately 2 seconds, then it is back to "non stop, on the edge of your seat, as you try to find a comfortable position to sleep in, action!"
Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
I felt this to be a decent film.
This movie is a pretty decent one. I don't know if it was worth my $7.50, but at least it made me laugh a few times, and it gave me an obscure, mildly accurate view of how "Nosferatu" was made. I recommend seeing the silent classic "Nosferatu" before seeing this film. Although the movie has a slew of great actors... Cary Elwes, John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, and Udo Kier, I can't really say that any one of them shined more than the other. John Malkovich is not up to par as the lead role of F.W. Murnau, but the movie will keep a person entertained for an hour and a half reasonably well.
High Strung (1992)
I am sorry that this film has gotten a bad rap.
I can not believe that this film has received so many poor votes. It is just insane. Honestly, if you have ever complained about something, and you thought that your complaint was legitimate, then see this film. You will be rolling on the ground, especially if you find complanatory statements to be amusing. (Warning: This film is a great cult film, only for those who can truly find humor in the truth.) See it, and see what I mean.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
See it
Regardless of what you have heard, see this movie... it is famous for a reason. Some people consider it a cult film, but I don't consider millions a "cult". I think it has one downfall, and that is the denouement. If you know what that means... great, if you don't, then see it, and you will find out... but no matter what see it, to laugh until your buttcheeks are pulverized.
Safety Last! (1923)
I believe that YOU (meaning everybody) must see this film.
One of the forgotten heroes of silent comedy, Harold Lloyd, performs one of the most heroic physical feats in the history of film. This movie is truly one of the top ten most suspenseful films of all time. A must see for anyone who likes suspense, or who loves slapstick comedy. This movie is a real must for any movie buff, and it will only help develop your repertoire of great movies viewed. (Keep in mind that there were no stuntmen or secret camera tricks in 1923!)
Kill the Man (1999)
I decided to comment on the asthetic...
This movie is better than so many other movies. It really makes you look at the world in a different way. To catergorize this movie with any other would be a travesty. The acting is really one of a kind. With performances that spark multiple emotions. I felt good after watching this movie. If you like movies then you will like this one. This is more than just a movie, it is a work of art. Luke Wilson delivers a stunning performance. Josh Malina is as energetic as he is crafty. This movie is enjoyable for those who enjoy anything, as well as those who pick and choose.
