Dah (2002)
I don't understand people's enthusiasm
I had read many good reports of this movie and went to see it given that it was a little different and that I hoped it might throw some light on its country of origin, Iran. In fact it illuminated nothing, although, given the static nature of the cameras, the scene filmed in the dark was almost light relief. I find nothing to recommend in this film, the setting was bad (the difficulties of filming in a moving car were so obvious, with the background changing mid-sentence), the characterisation was shallow and the dialogue (crucial in a film with static cameras) was extremely poor. There may have been a revelation at the end that threw the whole thing into a new light and turned it into a perceptive essay on everyday existence. I don't know, I had left the cinema long beforehand...., I had some paint to watch drying.
Final Approach (1991)
This highly unusual film rewards the attentive viewer
If you're looking for a bit of light entertainment, forget it.
I saw this film when it first came to video and it blew my mind. It's major selling point at the time was that it was the first film with Digital sound. The sound is amazing but is an infrequent part of what is mainly just two guys sitting in a room talking to each other. The acting is excellent and the dialogue is highly unusual in that throughout the film your perception of what the characters are actually talking about changes. By the end, if you've been paying attention, you're head will be mangled.
An amazing film, thoroughly recommended for those tired of watching the usual big budget, action packed and totally mindless blockbusters.
Young Frankenstein (1974)
An intelligently daft comedy classic
I'm not a big Mel Brooks fan and rate little of his work other than "The Producers". This however is a masterpiece.... a comic classic, where he manages to pay homage to the early Karloff and Lugosi horror movies and still produce a laugh a minute. Absolutely everything is right about this film, the actors perfectly cast, the sets superb and the script just wonderful... "seven or eight quick ones and you're off bragging to the boys!"
You cannot possibly fully appreciate this film on one viewing as it is only after repeated viewings you start to appreciate many of the comic subtleties
Brooks has managed the almost impossible task of creating an intelligent homage to early cinema while at the same time creating a film where each scene can happily stand alone as a comedy classic.
Deep Impact (1998)
No impact whatsoever
The Scientist with the important information known only to him, driving erratically down the steep winding road at night, with a truck coming in the other direction....................the outcome is as predictable as the rest of this uninvolving film. The actors go through the motions. the action leaps about in unsettling time gaps and the special effects really aren't that special. The end of the world is nigh......it's all been done before, and much much better.
