Broadchurch: Episode #1.1 (2013)
Gripping, but I need subtitles! (Only partly joking here)
Fantastic series, brilliant acting, intelligent writing. BUT: I find the dialogue almost impenetrable at times. This is partly because the quite realistic sound design doesn't blare the voices over background noise, and partly because the Scots accent (the new hire is Scots, right?) is famously indecipherable. I have reasonable experience with some of the gnarlier accents of the British Isles, but this show is a real challenge. Does Duolingo have a Scots course?
Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)
lovely movie, dreadful music
i just saw this movie at last. as i watched, i was curious what a real chess player would think of it ( i know nothing of the game), but i suspect a fair amount of over-dramatization of the actual games. that said, it's a sweet movie with a sound moral take and wonderful, convincing performances.
but that music! i'm a professional musician, and am at this moment thanking my stars that my symphony job lets me avoid the studio rat-race. those cheap,
swelling horns and strings that are supposed to warm your heart and lift your spirits as the two boys walk into the ending....yuck! oh well, it sounds just like movies are supposed to sound, which is a terrible pity.
Kadosh (1999)
Deeply moving
I saw Kadosh in New York last fall and was deeply moved by it. I have no personal experience of orthodox Judaism, but have long been fascinated by its ideas and rituals; most of my "knowledge" comes from reading I B Singer, which may be more folkloric and colorful than accurate. I'm no fan of orthodoxy in any form, and this film only strengthened my feelings. I was weeping for both Malka and Rivka by the end--two strong, strongly emotional characters brought to grief by the strictures of their religion. It's really interesting to read the earlier comments on this page--I am so unfamiliar with the orthodox world, and was so gripped by the sheer emotional wallop of the story, that perhaps I was shaken from my usual critical stance. I hope to to see the film again
