Lost in America (1985)
Funny Funny Funny
I think Albert Brooks is an under-rated writer, director, and actor. I just love this movie, I can see it over and over again. The scene where he tries to persuade the owner of the casino is one of the best comedic scenes in cinema history. His comedy is not for everyone, but if you understand his humour you know what I mean. And if you love this movie check out Modern Romance, another classic that will leave you in stitches.
Election (1999)
Brilliant Satire
This is, in my opinion, a thinking person's movie. A brilliant satire on ambition, jealousy, ill conceived wants, desires, and hatred. All played out in High School. Matthew Broderick is perfect and Reese Witherspoon earned my lasting respect. Superb direction to boot!!!The last scene sums up the entire movie: what the f*ck was Tracey ..... Funny, funny, and FUNNY!
The Stand (1994)
Obviously Can NEVER Be As Good As The Book
I was extremely hesitant to rent this movie because I knew ant movie could never be as good as the book. What Stephen King book could be translated into of his characters on film as you can imagine reading the novel, that is the beauty of his writing, you lose yourself in his character development and that is what the movie lacked, what any SK movie lacks. C'mon, Molly Ringwald as Frannie Goldsmith? The only satisfactory portrayal was James Sheridan as The Dark Man, what a great find in him. I simply love, adore, admire, and worship Stephen King but it his his writing that enthrall us all. We must always keep that in mind when we rent a SK movie. NOTHING beats his written word. I think every Stephen King admirer would attest to that, or at least I would hope so.
Lulu on the Bridge (1998)
It's been done before...
In a brilliant film called Jacob's Ladder. Paul Auster is a fine novelist but to ride on the coat-tails of JL seems to be beneath him. Some novels should just never be made into a movie. This one is one of them.
Higher Learning (1995)
Intense movie unjustly criticized
I think some of you who criticized the movie for containing harsh stereotypes and being unrealistic missed the point of the movie. I think Singleton was using a college campus as a microcosm of America. Hence Columbus (discovering America) University and the full screen of the American flag at the end. When seen in that context, I believe the film makes more sense. While what was depicted might not happen at a single university, it certainly had happened in America's history and the stereotypes he portrayed can certainly be modeled from real people. And in the past 5 years how many school shootings have there been???? Unrealistic, I don't think so.
The Dead Zone (1983)
A Movie You Can See Time And Time Again
I simply love this movie. I'm a huge Stephen King fan and this is one of the best movie adaptions of a King novel. I must have read the book an equal number of times I saw the movie because every time after I see the movie I have to read the book. And I agree with a previous reviewer, THE ICE IS GOING TO BREAK is "one of the best delivered lines in cinematic history."
The Brothers (2001)
I wish...
The people who rated this movie as a 1 would have explained themselves. I liked it. The screenplay had some extremely funny dialogue, just ask the members of the audience I saw it with. Sure, all the actors looked extremely hot, Oh maybe that is why some people did not like it. It is like females disliking Bring It On or Drop Dead Gorgeous because the actresses were hot. Now I understand.
Cast Away (2000)
A Movie that makes you wonder long after the movie has ended
This movie is amazing. I will not spoil the movie as many have done by telling you what happens, you have some idea. Soon after it ended I was saying this is not a movie to see twice BUT it sticks with you and you HAVE to see it again. That is the true sign of a great, no life altering, movie!! It stays with you long after the film has ended. Just go see it, you won't be disappointed.
