Saving Grace (2000)
British comedy once again tops the lot!
Brenda Blethyn is surely a force to reckon with - if she can carry a film about drugs to Sundance and push it successfully, that must mean something. And I can see why they loved it. We Brits know how to make people laugh by using extreme situations in everyday circumstances and this one catches it just right. The sense of timing in this film is perfect, and our Bren's supporters shine through - especially Clunes as the bumbling Doctor, and Craig Ferguson's mouthing off session in the pub is classic. Enjoy.
Gladiator (2000)
Spectacular - Stephen Boyd would be proud!
The only problem with this movie is - the length! Epic it may be but Ben Hur it is not, therefore I think Mr. Scott would have been wise to "lop off" maybe 15-20 minutes, probably in the "death dream" sequences and certainly the longer moments between Lucila and dear brother. Overall, the film is magnificent and what a tribute to Olly Reed - wherever you are you should be as drunk as a skunk over this one. Russel Crowe must now be seen as the quiet man with the hard face and soft heart - surely Hollywood will now give him the roles that he so justly deserves.
