Chuen zik saat sau (2001)
Hey there's two version of this movie
(Spoilers Ahead)
I happened to have and watch two versions of this movie. In the first version, the Japanese assassin, O, managed to survive the glorious duel at the end of the movie and got away with Chin.
In the second version, it was O who had been killed instead of Tok. Eventually, Tok also get caught by the police soon after emerging from the warehouse.
IMHO I think the second version tends not to glorify the assassins by giving them heroic status. It stands to say that every crime does pay!
However the first version is more fun to watch and runs more in line with Johnie To's kind of direction (almost similar ending to 'Running Out Of Time').
Dragonheart: A New Beginning (1999)
An enjoyable movie!
I would say Dragonheart 2 has a very straight and simple storyline. It has funny moments and a very unexpectable ending.
I recommend this for a family show - no blood is spilled and the action is kept to the minimum.
Independence Day (1996)
Overzealous American patriotisme
ID4 is full with sci-fi action but is very loose on logic and common sense. It is too unlikely that the alien spacecraft can be easily defeated. The alien may have a very high technology but the main force field must come and be located on their mothership????? To attack a planet with civilisations the alien should think to attack the military site first; but instead they chose to attack defenseless cities and towns...???? Please....give me a break.
What with this idea that only Americans can counter any attack from space: aliens (ID4) and meteor (Armageddon and Deep Impact). The Americans only defeated the aliens in their homeland. What happened if the aliens which preparing an attack on Mumbai heard about their defeat in America? Shouldn't they cancel the attack and head for America instead?
ID4 can be enjoyed only if you forsaken all this seriously logic thinking.
Alien (1979)
What's that lurking behind you?????
I can understand the impact of this film to the moviegoers back in 1979. Back then the form of the alien is not much known. People had to sit until the end of the show to catch the glimpse of the monster. We know that the characters had been killed when we heard them screamed or suddenly the radio went off.
But I feel that the younger moviegoers (generation-Y???)nowadays may find 'Alien' boring. First of all the movie move very slowly much like '2001: Space Odyssey'. In addition to this, the alien is no mystery anymore. People can buy the alien figurines almost anywhere. We saw the alien and said, "Hey this alien is cute, can I keep it?"
I think it is not very harsh to say that the scary element in this movie is not that relevant anymore. And it can be watched once only to enjoy the suspense.....no good action in this movie, sorry.
For action and movies that can be watched several times go for 'Aliens' or 'Alien Resurrection'.
Hang Tuah (1956)
Once upon a time there's Hang Tuah
Hang Tuah was a legendary Malay admiral who lived under Malacca Sultanate in 15th Century. Some may regard him as hero but others just call him a malicious and cold hearted warrior. This film described him as the former and treated him as everybody's favourite. At the time P. Ramlee who acts as Hang Tuah was also everybody's favourite and the film fares well among the movie goers.
The film was made in color where most of films at that time are in black and white. A good film...as this movie was directed by an Indian director, expect a few songs sung by P.Ramlee and Saloma...it was done ala Bollywood movies.
It Could Happen to You (1994)
A great 'fairy tale'
What can I say of Nicolas Cage who is always in the right movie all the time. He may not have a great look but this make him more appealing because every guy can compare himself to Nicolas Cage. Every guy can be like Nicolas Cage. It will be very hopeless if one try to be like Tom Cruise or Keanu Reeves.
I was touched by this story of an honest cop who promised to share his won lottery with a waitress; and all of this happened in NEW YORK, mind you.
Sometimes a good film does not need highly advanced special effects but only a good 'fairy tale'.
Jogho (1997)
A rare pearl of its kind
It has always been hard to find a good adaptation of novels nowadays. But U-Wei had succeeded in this movie. He delivers what the original author cannot do - telling a story in celluloid form. U-Wei had made a big name himself in the international front but being criticised by fellow countrymen. His other film 'Kaki Bakar' had won great attention in France; but had not even been premiered here in Malaysia. He directed a story of a village whore in 'Perempuan, Isteri dan ....' which became a controversy and U-Wei had been slammed by many local Woman's Societies that labelled the film as exploitation of female gender.
Watch 'Jogho' and you will not be disappointed; but please don't read the novel beforehand or you will miss the suspense and the climax.
Enter the Dragon (1973)
Too over-rated for clearly an average B-movie
I was informed that "Enter the Dragon" was such a good movie. With this belief in mind, I went to a video shop and bought myself a copy of it. To tell you the truth this is the most disappointing kung fu movie I have ever watched. Why? The real kung fu action only start 50 minutes after the movie began. Before that we see Bruce smiling, laughing, looking sad and looking bad. Not to mention a very thin plot. Other Bruce films are better than this, "The Way of the Dragon" and "The Chinese Connection" to name a few.
To watch better and real action in kung fu flicks I suggest Jackie Chan earlier films such as "Project A" and "Dragons Forever".
To label "Enter the Dragon" as the greatest kung fu movie is very misleading.
