Im Zeichen des Kreuzes (1983)
not too good but historically interesting
The film describes an accident while transportation of nuclear material near a German village. Most of the inhabitant are contaminated and will eventually die through the film.
The scenario is not to realistic and the whole film smells like low budget. If you want to get good fiction concerning what would happen to men and society in comparable situations you should watch "The Day After". But if you get your hand on the DVD, the extra material contains an one hour discussion in German television that was broadcasted after the film and that is interesting not only because of it's relevance for nuclear problems but also as a historical document of good old German television discussions. You won't find something like that today.

What's the big deal?
Sorry, but I cannot understand the big discussion going around this film. OK, there are explicit sex scenes, but nothing you could not see in an adult television program (at least here in Germany). For me, the most disgusting scene was when Tate put in his grandfathers false teeth (after killing him, but that scene was chicken s**t compared to any good film with a killing). Liking or blowing male or female sexual organs is not to uncommon to me. So, I do understand that this is an adults-only film, but anything else is beyond my scope. Alice in Wonderland has less morality! And why are people talking about that this film would indicate that teenagers try to escape from everyday violence by having sexual intercourse? For my understanding, that is not one of the major themes here. There are sex scenes, but there is not more sex in this film than in everyday life. The main characters are not having sex all the time.
This film made me feel lost in a way I only remember being a teenager myself. No big deal! Either your father is an alcoholic or your girlfriend is pregnant, or you just have grandparents that really love you over the top: When you are a teenager, you are alone with all that, and it happens all the time anywhere in the world. Pretty usual things show in a real disturbing way.
Nice peace of work and a film worth thinking about, but not talking about.
Irréversible (2002)
Happiness is more cruel then violence
SPOILER! I've seen this move years ago unintentionally at the theatre. The summary did not give a hint that this is not some Hollywood "shocker" about revenge, but a true peace of art. But the extraordinary opening told me very quick that this would not be one of those amusing evenings at the movies. When we left the cinema, it took some time till we spoke again, and we all where fascinated.
When it came out on DVD I bought it and tried to watch it again. But I was amazed that I did not had a problem with the scenes of extreme violence (the killing and raping) but with the end of the film. As the film goes further, it becomes more and more positive and that was what I couldn't cope! The film is told backwards (like Memento), so it start with the ending which is a lynch justice in a gay club, followed by a never-ending rape in an undercrossing. But after that (in watching-time, but before in story-time) the day of that sweet but everyday couple is told. And the story gets nicer and nicer, ending with the girl learning that she is pregnant and being very happy about that. And I had to learn that it was more horrible to see how good that life had been before what happened to it (and what I already had seen) than to watch a life going down from a happy point. When watching it an DVD, I had to turn of in a scene in the underground when the talking gets more and more common and more away from any indication of what will come (in story-time, but what has happened in watching-time).
This was the first "happy ending" I could not stand, as it was "only" a happy ending in watching-time, but the happy starting in story-time.
I hope I was able to express this in my poor English ...
La cité des enfants perdus (1995)
My only modern ferry tale
There are not many films which changed my life, but this one did. I like it very much when things are not too clear in a movie (best example: lost highway) and it starts to work in your own phantasy. This one works since the day I´ve seen it up to now, and most of the movies I´ve seen before look dumb now (except one: naked lunch, also a ferry tale, but in a different way).
But because this movie impressed me so much, I cannot understand, what made Jeunet, Khondji and some of the others to make Alien 4!
