Malignant (2021)
Weak
Unoriginal cheesy screenplay. Terrible direction and junk editing. Overlong and cheap. Setup for a sequel that, hopefully, will never happen.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Meh
Heavy-handed direction helps sink this one. It starts out okay, but devolves into a walking talking cliche. It's been done to death, and done better, in a dozen other films. Pretty much intended as award bait for Amy Adams, nothing else. Move on. Nothing to see here.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
Cliche and predictable
Every cop movie cliche in the first five minutes (broken marriage, loner cop forced to take on a new partner, obvious red herrings, etc.). And I had the killer pegged the moment he had to "borrow" Chris Rock's cell phone. Lazy writing. The whole movie is nothing more than an excuse to show bigger and more elaborate kills.
Chronicle of a Serial Killer (2020)
Cringe-worthy bad
Horribly acted. Painfully bad screenplay. Ham-handed direction. Slap-dash editing. Cliche beyond belief. The overly-high rating has to be padded by individuals involved with the film. I almost detached a retina from all the eye-rolling I did.
House at the End of the Street (2012)
Nothing new
I've seen it all before, but executed better. No scares whatsoever. Cliche and entirely predictable. That's 100 minutes of my life I wish I could get back.
Aladdin (2019)
Stick with the original
None of the magic, chemistry, charisma, or comedic timing of the original Disney version was present here. Will Smith was the perfect choice for the genie, but they kept the reins on him for some reason. And, in typical Disney fashion, they PC'd the tar out of this one as they've been doing with all of their sequels and remakes over the last several years. Other appealing elements from the original were simply left out entirely. Iago, for example, was a funny character in the 90's version, but pretty much just a normal parrot in this one. Abu? You guessed it. Normal monkey. Skip it.
Robin Hood: The Rebellion (2018)
What a dog
The acting was amateurish and the fight scenes look like they were choreographed by an eleven-year-old. The 12th century women all have 21st century sensibilities, of course, and dispatch just about as many soldiers as Robin and his men. Find something better to do with 90 minutes. It shouldn't be too hard.
He's Out There (2018)
Avoid
Predictable, cliché, and by-the-numbers. Only an 89-minute run-time, but it felt twice that long. Skip it.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
PC and cliché
You can't have an action movie these days without adding the tough chick throwing trained assassin's around like rag dolls. It doesn't matter that she weighs maybe 90 pounds soaking wet, our girls need a roll model. This movie adds the cliché daughter who wants nothing to do with her dad and whose sole purpose in the film is to constantly create problems and get into trouble making it that much more amazing when Jack Reacher completes his mission. Skip this one.
