Black and White (1999)
"Black and White" has trouble staying on track
For me, James Toback has always been a director that I have great admiration for, but I just don't find his movies very entertaining. Like Martin Scorcese, Spike Lee, and others, he's a great director, but I never leave the film saying "God, I can't wait to see that again." "Black and White" is not much different. The premise, taking a look at white youths and the influence of black culture on them, is intriguing. If Mr. Toback had stayed on track with this, he would have had a very raw and powerful movie. But the film moves from a out-of-place Ben Stiller as a corrupt detective to a even more out-of-place Robert Downey Jr. as a gay documentary filmmaker. Hey, maybe I am missing something here; it wouldn't be the first time. But this film is bogged down by twisted murder plots and unoriginal obsceneities. The only performance that shines through is, amazingly enough, Mike Tyson as himself. Hey, Mr. Toback, you'll never have a problem getting me in the theatre, it's getting me in there the second time that you have to work on.
Ready to Rumble (2000)
I'm not "Ready" to watch this film again
"Ready To Rumble" is an example of what's wrong with films today. From its glorification of professional wrestling to its non-stop scatalogical humor, it was painful to watch. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy stupid comedies as much as the next guy, but watching David Arquette acting more like a baboon than on his telephone commercials is not my idea of a fun time. Will someone please get this guy a new agent? Courtney Cox, please read some of these scripts before he signs on! Meanwhile, Oliver Platt is completely unbelievable as the "professional wrestling champion of the world." Poor Martin Landau is reduced to playing a over-the-hill wrestler. The only laughable part of this movie, besides the fact that it was so bad, was a hilarious crack on Michael Bolton. I admit you are at a disadvantage if you are not a pro-wrestling fan, but I would hope even The Rock would lay the smackdown on this film. The act of watching this movie is as painful as the countless hits to the crotch the filmmakers thought were so amusing. This film is below the belt, and unless you are a big Adam Sandler fan, stay out of the ring for this one.
