Netflix owes me a month off my bill!
24 February 2020
I was all in for the ride. Mystery death. Mystery big house. Mysterious things going bump in the night. Tunnels in the basement that lead to to nowhere (maybe that was a casual hint, darn it), unsettling new town and creepy next door neighbors.

So many clues, like unnerving photographs, missing cell phones, contact lenses, a broken staircase, Olympic Running times... THAT MEANT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

This movie is like riding a huge rollercoaster all the way to the very top then told to get out, take the stairs all the way down and expecting you to have enjoyed the ride!

Epic, and I don't use this word lightly, FAILURE! (And not even in a fun way)

Watch it and please DON'T leave politics at the door
9 September 2019
A very timely fantasy piece about prejudice, love, families torn apart, civil injustice, murder, mystery and dark family secrets. This is not a light hearted fairy tale (should I say Fae Tale) but a Sherlock Holmes/Jack the Ripper Fantasy Murder story with fairies, Pucks, Centaurs and a twist. And please DO NOT ignore the politics of it, because you will learn sonething. Also what's the point of art if it doesn't imitate life, or dies life imitate art. Watch and see. Well scripted, directed and acted. Can't wait for Season 2!

Brilliant psychological thriller that depends on
5 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film offers all the features of a psychological thriller without the huge reveal, which makes it more satisfying for the cerebral viewer.

First and foremost this film is beautifully shot. You are immediately immersed in into the era of the 1940's. As a viewer you become a sort of voyeur given a front row seat into the lives of a once prestigious now decaying family. The acting was stellar, each character so well defined that you feel you have known them without ever having been introduced.

The home in which the story surrounds itself around remains majestic despite the toll time and grief have left up on it. Who hasn't fallen in love with a home on first sight? A house on a hill that is just out of reach but you can still hear the music below from parties it is hosting. That type of longing to be a part of a home's the history is central to the storyline of this movie.

But for one man this is more than love, it's a complete and total obsession. And not just due to the beauty of the architectural structure but also of the social status the home carries with it. A draw so powerful to a little boy that he is not only haunted by it his entire life, he metaphysically (or perhaps physically) haunts it in return.

The home symbolizes his deep infatuation to belong, to be in a class above his own. It represents his mother's approval. His father's approval. Society's approval.

In reality the home is falling apart, a figure of the past, something once grand now just a shadow of its former self. While the people who live in the home recognize and are resigned to its deterioration, the main character can't see beyond what the home represented to him as a child. It remains the epitomy of all he wants in life.

Towards the end of the film one is left with the impression that the main character may have had a hand in more than one death that occurred on the property. And perhaps involved in the single death that the entire movie revolves around that eventually propelled the home into decay.

Whether he or fate played a part in his eventual ownership of the property, you are left with the distinct feeling the home has found the owner it deserved. Two forces that were destined to be together regardless of carnage it left in its wake.

Major Disappointment.
6 December 2018
Wanted to love this film as I adore the book. The book is all about dealing with feelings and learning to have control over them. The Beasts represent the out of control rages a young child has and 'Max the King' represents learning how to tame those rages. Everytime I read the book, it brings me to tears for its simplistic pure representation of a young frustrated child and his wild imagination. And thereinlies the problem with this film, it is lacking the simplicity, the true heart of its message. It fails to capture the magic that a simple, mostly illustrated book does by creating far more than is necessary. Yes costumes are impressive, the direction impressive, the acting superb and visually the film is stunning, but the storyline fails to accurately represent the book.

It's almost like the person who wrote the screenplay did not understand what the book was about. It lacked a heart and without true heart this film fails at everything the book accomplished.

The Eye (2002)
CHILLING!
21 January 2004
Seriously spooky film. I love a good on the edge of your seat thriller and this one comes through 110%. This movie takes you on a rollercoaster ride and never lets go all the way to the end. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a "ghost" film more.

The single thing that impressed me the most is that I completely forgot I was reading subtitles! I was so immersed into the story that I truly forgot that this smart and wonderful film was in the language of Mandarin.

ALSO there are no "Cheap Thrills" here... the moments are genuine and every second of the film becomes creepier and creepier until the climax and then when you think the ride is over THINK AGAIN.

Do yourself a favor, even if you don't care for foreign films or reading subtitles.... RENT THIS FILM and PLEASE don't view it alone!!

Wonderful film- Holds up strong under time!
9 October 2003
You don't need to be a Marilyn fan to enjoy this wonderful film.

A great light hearted comedy that pairs up Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe in their prime.

The performances are outstanding- Marilyn's precision comic timing along with Jane's dead-pan delivery make for an unforgettable comedy team.

At a time where men were leading the field for comedy pairings along comes Russell and Monroe and a better combination there is not!

The musical numbers are terrific especially Bye-Bye Baby and the classic Diamonds are Girls Best Friend.

The supporting roles are also well cast with the Charles Coburn as the Multimillionaire "Piggy" who has eyes only for Diamonds and Marilyn and the wonderful late Tommy Noonan as Marilyn's nerdish and gullible love interest Gus Edmond.

If you look beyond the surface which makes this film at first appear to be a seemingly stereotypical tale of young helpless women looking for rich husbands you will actually see a story of two strong and self-sufficient women looking for what they want in life, going out to get it and not settling for less!

But let's not make this any deeper than we need to... this is a FUN FILM... not meant to change the world but just to entertain you for a few hours-- AND THAT IT DOES!

High ranks from young and old... Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is great family entertainment.

Now, might I close with an Anita Loos quote about Marilyn Monroe in GPB:

"I did not write the role Lorelei Lee as Marilyn performed it in the film, but I sure as hell wish I had!"

Ali (2001)
ALI Okayest not Greatest...
27 February 2002
Might I first say, I am a huge fan of Michael Mann and Will Smith DESPITE this film.

WHAT WENT WRONG WITH THIS FILM?

Well, first the movie was way too long, almost three hours total (the last thing this movie needed were slow motion sequences, but Mann felt differently and put them in at any chance he could).

Second the movie was way too muddled and jumbled to be enjoyable to the novice viewer. It could never quite make up it's mind whose story this was about. Was it's Ali's story? Malcom's? The Islam Nation's? The U.S. Army's?

Third, Will Smith is a more than fine actor but in this role he never quite reaches the mark. There are times he has Ali's rhythm of speech and nails him 100% and then other times he is so off the mark you are reminded of his Fresh Prince days. Physically you can tell Mr. Smith dedicated himself to changing his body to look more like Ali but in the fight scenes he is still so significantly smaller than Ali was that he looks silly. (FOOTNOTE: There is one bearded actor who is a photographer at the fight scenes, this man looks EXACTLY like Ali that at times it's terribly distracting. I found myself screaming "HIRE THAT GUY-- HE'S YOUR ALI!")

Fourth, Jon Voight is good as Howard Cosell but the makeup is so terribly distracting that you are reminded at every moment that its really Jon Voight in heavy make-up.

The out-and-out winner of this film is Jamie Foxx, who was excellent in this break though role. It might also be added that another impressive actor in a smaller role was Van Peebles as Malcom X.

Overall, let's just say you learn nothing new in this movie about Ali's life. I knew very little of Ali going in to the theater and even less going out. Sadly, as a viewer you are really left more confused then enlightened about this great American sports hero.
