A Southern Odyssey
4 June 2002
Blind Oracle, Sirens, a Cyclops, an all powerful, hateful pursuer, and a long journey fraught with danger. Yep, that's the Odyssey! I read it. Hard to read, hard to stick with. O Brother wasn't! I'll bet Homer wished he had had thought to seed it with "old timey music" and a sense of humor. I really liked this movie.

Controversy, Controversy!
28 December 2001
Well, I won't add to the fire. BoaN is an amazing piece of filmmaking for 1914. The first half is somewhat historically accurate, but where did the second half come from? So, good filmmaking - bad history. On a note of fact, the Ku-Klux Klan was founded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest CSA. Forrest is lauded in the South as a great cavalryman, and condemned in the North as a bushwacking butcher. Nonetheless, his statue stands under the rotunda of the Tennessee State House.

Hmmmm...
12 July 2001
...well, it's a stupid movie. JT hams it up so badly that your average Rabbi would declare him unclean. BUT, it's not THAT bad. There are a hell of a lot worse movies than this one. (What is with the camera angles?) I see all the negative commenters as "bandwagon jumpers". I have decided that I really like Barry Pepper, boy did he ever try hard. However the rest of the characters are undeveloped and flaaaaat. I kinda liked Kim Coates, dunno why, but then I liked his brief scene in "Waterworld" too. Creepy. All in all, I won't watch it again.. of course I won't watch "Citizen Kane" again either, what a bore. (Another guy with a thing for camera angles) (OOOOH, SACRILEGE!) Well, tough!

You know...
20 January 2001
... the final shot of this movie is creepier than all the rest (except Cheech's "Chet Pussy" barker). The pull-away showing that the Titty Twister is just the top of a mostly buried, ancient Mayan temple with decades of rusting trucks, is very cool. Things that make you go "Hmmmm".

Oh, PUL-leese
15 October 2000
I watch a lot of movies but I pick and choose those that I review. I love cheap SciFi and Horror. Anybody who has read any of my other reviews knows that I am most forgiving of schlock and am more than willing to turn my brain off and suspend my disbelief. However, this wreched piece of trash appalled me. It did start out very well and I thought I might be in for a little gem. But NOOOO! It ran downhill faster than Niagra Falls, cumulating in the trashiest ending, that I just could not stomach. Ms. Lowery is the only redeeming factor after the opening scene. There, I said something nice.

As submarine movies go...
1 August 2000
...this is one of the best. I've read the other comments and it seems that 1957 effects are not good enough for everybody. Listen, this is a MOVIE, suspend your disbelief. It's a great story, supported by two excellent leads in Mitchum and Jurgens. As somebody mentioned, it was the basis for a Star Trek episode, but I have seen it (or parts of it), in some form or another often. To anyone who likes war movies I would recommend it enthusiastically. As an anti-war movie, well, it isn't jingoistic but the message is a normal one for anyone who's been in combat.

Why?
26 June 2000
Norm(an)ally I don't mind remakes. There are some pretty good ones out there, BUT this one is a stinker! Considering it was practically scene for scene, it had a good story and great actors. Van Sant copied Al's direction virtually flawlessly, and it added color (I'm not one of those who think it has to be B&W to be classic). It should have been at least a mediocre movie... but it was pee-pee caa-caa! I don't understand how it could have been screwed up so badly. If you must, watch it as a curiosity, but I would suggest that you not bother.

Don't miss the point
6 June 2000
I've read the comments and it seems everybody misses the point. They all talk about Saving Private Ryan, but there is no comparison. SPR was a tunnel vision view of D-Day, The Longest Day is an overview. (Who said SPR was "leftist"... Geeze, I thought I was conservative) A lot of the "wooden" dialog in TLD was actual quotes and situations credited to real people. If you want to have a good idea of D-Day watch TLD for the history and SPR for the drama.

Spectacular!
22 May 2000
Spectacular is both a genre description and my personal opinion. I won't repeat raves about Russell Crowe or attempt to show my knowledge of Roman history by pointing out the inaccuracies. I'm sure Tacitus would be forgiving. I will simply say that the movie was vastly entertaining and left me slack jawed with it's depictions of ancient Rome. I am SO impressed with the state of computer graphics. The costuming was VERY accurate (not an "attic" helmet in sight). The combat scenes were convincing and engrossing and bloody. Also having seen "The Fall of the Roman Empire" it was interesting to compare the filmmakers' ideas and conceptions of the characters. What's more, my WIFE liked it, and cried at the end. How about THAT! "Gladiator" will definitely go on my list of favorite movies.

The FUNNIEST one!
25 April 2000
Of all of the outrageously funny PP series, THIS is is the best. This installment really sets the tone of the series, the ones before and after. The whole Tyrolian section made me laugh so hard that I really hurt myself. "Does yoor dowg BITE?" Oh my! And the castle/dentist/nitrous scene.........ooooooh, excuse me while I adjust my truss.

Ulzana's Raid (1972)

One of the first "new" westerns
22 April 2000
When I saw Ulzana's Raid the first time, it blew me away. I was used to the "old" style westerns, good guys/bad guys John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart. There was a flirting in the '60s with "good" Indians - "bad" whites as well as things like MacKenna's Gold. But a movie with no clear cut divisions, and reality based reactions (the Trooper who rides back to "aid" the settler woman), I wasn't used to. This was the first that I had seen that blurred the traditional lines, and pulled no punches. I really liked this movie.

Gettysburg (1993)

Awe Inspiring
2 April 2000
I first went to Gettysburg when I was 6 or 7. Ever since, I have wandered those fields on a regular basis. I am an amateur military historian, and I give private tours of the battlefield. I have spent nights there, cold camping, and avoiding Park Service patrols. I have walked, driven, biked, rode horseback, and flew over in a plane, a chopper, and a hot air balloon. I don't believe there's an inch of ground there I haven't been on. I've spent hours at the Railroad Cut, the Peach Orchard, the Angle, Culp's Hill, The Cemetery, Spangler's Spring, and Barlow's Knoll, not to mention the east Cavalry Fields. I guess my point is: often, while standing on Little Round Top, beneath the statue of Gen. Warren, I look out over The Wheatfield and Devil's Den, or over to Cemetery Ridge or Seminary Ridge, I wonder - I try to imagine - what it was like. The movie Gettysburg, with any of it's inaccuracys, gave me the best vision I've ever had. I wish there had been four more hours.

Harryhausen's BEST!
28 March 2000
An adventure for the ages. Forget that this film was done in 1958, it will still awe the most jaded viewer. This is Ray Harryhausen's very best work. The stop-motion effects are awesome. But, even with all of the eye candy, it's a great story brought to life by fine, serious performances by Kerwin Matthews, Kathryn Grant-Crosby, and especially by Torin Hatcher who has to be the creepiest and most evil villain there is on celluloid - including Darth Vader. If you are an Adventure/Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie fan and you haven't seen this film...Shame On You! Go out and buy it, rent it, whatever - Just see it!

A fun movie
26 March 2000
I first saw this film when I was a child. My friends and I were enamored of it, and played "Atlantis" for weeks after. Watching the movie with adult eyes, however, reveals that it is not George Pal's best work. Even so, it continues to have sentimental value for me and I do watch it occasionally. I still believe it to be a "fun" movie, real Saturday Matinee, popcorn and juju beads, sticky floor fun. Just turn off the brain, drop your expectations, and enjoy.
