Bread and Roses (2000)
one of the most moving films I've ever seen
This film gets less attention than it should because it's so explicitly political. That's one of its strengths, but if you think it will bother you, see it for the great story and the wonderful acting. Bread and Roses is one of the most intensely realistic films I've ever seen, but at the same time it's one of the most dramatic, and also one of the most moving. If you can watch the confrontation between Rosa and Maya, or the last few scenes of the movie, without crying, you need to check your pulse.
The Mission (1986)
one of the best movies ever made
This movie is so good it's hard to write about it without sounding like a hysteric. The script, acting, cinematography and score are wonderful, and the scenery is breathtaking. The story is totally compelling, deeply moving, and true. In my book, it's one of the ten best movies ever made.
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Hitchcock's best movie
Far-and-away Hitchcock's best movie. The actors are incredible, especially Robert Walker, whose performance is one of the greatest on film. The script is brilliant and tight as a drum.
In the Mood (1987)
A much-underrated delight
I must have watched this film close to ten times by now and I've enjoyed it every time. The script is charming, the acting great, the direction masterful and the sense of time and place very convincing. To top it off, it's even a true story. I love this film and I wish they'd bring it out on DVD.
Tommy (1975)
Probably the most visually stunning film I've ever seen
The music is great too, of course. It's a bit overlong, but scene after scene is simply eye-popping. I'm normally no fan of excess, but this man is a visual genius. Great acting from Ann-Margaret and Oliver Reed.
Queimada (1969)
Probably the best movie I've ever seen
and I've watched it at least 20 times. Marlon Brando's best performance. Also best titles, best music, best script, great scenery and, unlike many other movies, it's really about something.
