Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Definitely better when drunk
Saw this when it first came out, and I cant say it made any real impression then. Last night after drinking with a friend, this was on when i got home.
The 2 main characters wake up and as the day goes, they find out they cant remember much. Except they have anniversaries with their girlfriends, and cant find their presents.
Most of the "funny" stuff revolves around sex and/or drugs/alcohol. First time round, this seemed like a run of the mill college movie (except the main characters don't seem to go to any college). It probably still is, but this time, me being drunk, I had a slight smile on my face through the movie.
Feel-good movie for a time when you are intoxicated. The gags are a bit lame if not.
Wallander: Fotografen (2006)
Can Wallander crack this one ?
Another movie based on a Mankell/Wallander book. In this one an American aid-worker gets run down by a car after her stealing a photography. Wallander and the rest of the Ystad police are on a case with ties to Afghanistan.
Apart from Henriksson many of the actors delivery of lines leave much to be desired. Pretty common in a low-budget tvmovie, but a couple of extra takes here and there could have helped. Tom Lyell deserves credit for his brief but welcome visit.
All in all a below average filming of a book that in my view is not Mankells best. Save it for a rainy day when there's no Colombo on TV.
A Stranger Among Us (1992)
stiff
This movie would be a stinker whomever played lead. Would take a change of half the cast and a major rewrite to make this come close to a passable.
Too much focus on tidbits about this cult, not enough focus on characters and a story. - And the strange undercover thing. Cant see her getting police funding for that.
"Swear you wont tell anyone" - "we are not allowed to swear" "we can promise" what policeman would ask people to swear not to blow their cover ? Just makes it look even more like another silly buildup to another tidbit "fact" about this cult.
If you want facts about kabbalah/Judaism you should probably read a book or something. If you want to see drama/crime look elsewhere too.
I rate this movie somewhere below mediocre and boring. 4/10
Revenge on the Highway (1992)
Good cast, not too good movie
Saw this one tonight. Marriage ends in grief and anger when groom dies early in the movie. Movie becomes a chase for a hitandrun driver with several minutes of freeway footage. Solid performances by Keach and Brown in the first 20 minutes I find. Cast throughout the movie performs well so "well done" to the casting directors. This unfortunately is offset by some sloppy camera-work (erratic, back and forth, and too many extreme closeups). The script and idea isn't groundbreaking either.
Good acting, story none too engaging. I never really felt the fathers grief, and that took away from the overall feel. "Death wish Light" comes to mind.
Narrow Margin (1990)
Not bad
The total lack of intelligence and direction of the "professional" hit men takes away too much of the drama. Makes one think W. E. Coyote could have done a better job. In order for a thriller to function optimally, there has to be a real sense of danger. No suspense for me, cause the killers looked like they would end up tripping over their own shoelaces from the get-go.
Apart from that and the concept of a car chase on a train, not too shabby. The camera angles aren't always stunning, but what CAN you accomplish on a train (apart from maybe building sets to take over some scenes). Solid acting all round I feel. Archers character is a bit lacking in initiative, but maybe that was what she was directed into.
